I remember this match vividly for the great snooker Hallett played in the first session and the way he fell apart in the second. Hendry showed tremendous character to come back but unusually for him he wasn't winning frames in one visit. Hallett scored 40/50 points in almost every frame and had chance after chance to win, but every time he got to frame ball he seemed to choke. Even at 8-8 he had good chances but by that time all the belief was gone. A real shame because in the first session he potted Hendry off the table and this should have been the biggest day of his career.

    • @michaeltrumph121

This is what Hendry's opposition consisted in the early 90's: chokers like White and Hallet, old farts from the 80's who were way past their peak, young pups like O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams, and only a few good players like Davis, Parrot and Doherty, Wattana. No wonder he won so much, it was one of the weakest eras in history. As soon as the trio of O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams entered their 20's and a few more good players like Hunter and Stevens came on, Hendry vanished from the winners circle. That says it all.

@@michaeltrumph121 Hendry won multiple world titles when the 'Class of 92' were in their twenties. Yes, the opposition was tougher and Hendry's game deteriorated in the early 00s but to say that the era in the early to mid 90s was a weak one is ridiculous. If you look at the statistics, the standard at the top of the game in the mid to late 90s, when Hendry was still in his prime, was very similar to now. There is more strength in depth on tour now, however.

Poor Mike. Say what you will about him bottling it, you still have to give Stephen credit for potting the balls. The hallmark of a great player is never knowing when they're beaten. And Stephen, great player that he was, not only never knew when he was beaten, he also many a time quelled a comeback. The great champion that he was, he won from both predicaments, most famously, having led O'Sullivan 8-2, he lost 6 frames in a row, and on the deciding frame of the tournament, he knocked in a 147.

Players from the early 90's were weaker. The standard of the game in depth has risen after 2000.
It's not just the standard of the lower ranked players, but also the standard of the top players, even though not by that much. A 2012-2014 Ronnie would demolish any version of himself from the early 90's.
Hendry will always be a great, however he was not as good as his records suggest. I agree that you can only beat who's in front of you, but when those opponents are not that great, it's a lot easier to win titles.
Had Hendry turned pro at the same time as Ronnie, Higgins and Williams, he wouldn't have the records he now has.
Take a look at the rankings in the 94-95 season / Hendry's peak period.
      The top players were:
      1. Hendry - some might think that this version of Hendry beats any other player in history, with the exception of Ronnie. I reckon a peak Selby, Robertson and Higgins would also beat Hendry, and that's cause their break-building is just as good and their safety and tactical play is far superior.
      2. Steve Davis - this version of Steve (that Hendry had to beat in order to win his titles) stands little chance against Ronnie, Robertson, Selby, Higgins. He also loses 7 times out of 10 to Ding, Trump, Hawkins, Murphy, Marco Fu, M. Allen. He might stand a chance Bingham, Carter, Perry, Maguire, Wilson - but he's the underdog against any of them.
      3. Wattana - i reckon he has even little chance than Davis, since he's safety and tactical play is weaker.
      4. Jimmy - at his very best, he's up there with the best of them in terms of potting balls. However, he was very weak mentally and his safety and tactical play means that 9 times out of 10 he'll loose to the likes of Ronnie, Higgins, Robertson, Selby. He loses 7/10 against Ding, Trump, Hawkins, Murphy, Marco Fu, M. Allen and he's pretty even with Bingham, Carter, Perry, Maguire, Wilson.
      5. Parrott. 6. McManus 7. Doherty
I can't really see any of them winning more than 50% of the matches against Bingham, Carter, Perry, Maguire, Wilson. They will probably loose most time against Ronnie, Higgins, Robertson, Selby, Ding, Trump, Hawkins, Murphy, Marco Fu, M. Allen
8.Darren Morgan - gets beat 8 times out of 10 by all of today's top pros. Doesn't stand a prayer against 2012-2014 Ronnie, Higgins, Selby, Robertson, Trump, Ding.
      9. 19 year old Ronnie - on a great day, he might beat some top pros, but he loses everytime to the current version of himself, Selby, Robertson, Higgins.
      10. Peter Ebdon - might beat some top pros, but he'll loose far more matches than he wins.
      11. Nigel Bond
      12 Joe Swail
      13 David Roe
They'll loose 90% of the matches against today's top pros.
      14 Terry Griffiths
      15 Willie Thorne
      16 Tony Drago
They don't stand a prayer of winning. They'd probably get whitewashed in some matches.

***** Ok so if hendry says Ronnie is the best ever then thats true then yeah... But when Ronnie admits hendry is the best it must mean something else?

***** hehehe you r just behavinng like a kid... "Mom i don't know ,my ronnie is best no matter what".....
my advice just type names of both in wikipedia and you'll see the difference in both of their achievments....
simple is that i never said that ronnie is bad player in fact he is in my top 5 list of all times but stephen is surely a greatest
