This film holds a special place in my heart as it was the first Star Trek film I got to watch in the theatres with my parents. My mom was so excited for it and even more excited to find out that it's success got ST:TNG the green light. While I'm not a big trekkie like my mom is, I still enjoy watching this movie. Fond memories.
I like the condolences from Cast and Crew to the Challenger. Also i like they kept the promise to let the Chanllenger live on ---- as Geordis ship A little funfact about real lifes Challengers "teacher in space programm". Alongside Christa McAuliffe, the teacher Barbara Morgan also trained for the flight. It was by pure choise that Auliffe would end up on the Challenger and Morgan on the Endeavour. However, after Challenger, the "programm" was stopped until to 2007. Barbara Morgan started to space, on 8th August 2007. Making her the longest serving Astronaut with 21 ! years between first training and first flight.
A not so fun fact... The crew did NOT die when the Challenger exploded. Several members were still alive as the shuttle fell and died on impact with the Ocean. There was an inquiry done by the government and this news was released some time later, but it was buried deep in the papers. The myth that they all died in the explosion persists to this day. How do they know some crewmembers were still alive? They radioed an SOS after the explosion.
Novelizations are generally based on early shooting scripts, not the final script and certainly not the cut/filmed version. So often there are little gems and hidden vignette that never make it to the filmed version. This is obviously so the novel can be released simultaneously with the film. The three that stand out from Vonda's treatment. 1 - Akira Sulu 2 - Kirk uses a Vulcan neck pinch in the hospital, looks down at his hand, and exclaims, that worked, that never worked before. 3 - Scotty is well aware that Dr. Nichols actually did invent Transparent Aluminum, and so he presumes that providing the formula is simply your everyday predestination paradox.
Star Trek VI was what got me into Star Trek, followed swiftly by Next Gen. I had no idea the two were so intrinsically linked. Really cool 👍. Thanks, Seán!
In Germany the Titel is „Zurück in die Gegenwart“, which could be translated as „Back to the Present“. You see what reference they tried in the promotion process? 🖖🏻
She did the Pon Far with Spock as a teenager before the planet blew up. How could this be David Marcus’s child? David Marcus fought to protect the group but I don’t know if he was protecting his mate. We don’t see any scene showing that they were a couple. I would say that if she got pregnant on the planet it would be Spock’s not David’s.
Where did that giant Tube-thing come from? I always assumed it was made and piloted by super advanced humpbacks. Did they colonise earth eons ago but miss the dangerous humans evolving on land when they picked earth as a colony and thought it would be safe?
Star Trek "science" vs. real science. The closest land mammal to which whales are related to are hippopotamuses (evolutionarily speaking). And neither whales nor hippos have the requisite manipulable appendages like hands, fingers, etc. to use the tools necessary to construct a spaceship.
I like how Scotty changed history with no care to the butterfly effect when he gave them the chemical formula for transparent aluminum. _"How do we know that he didn't invent the damn thing?" - Montgomery Scott_
So, when I saw this movie in the theaters it contained a trailer for Next Generation that included shots that would be included in the credits. So it couldnt have greenlit that show, it was already in progress.
I thought you might find this interesting if you ever do a Star Trek beyond version when it shows the Ambassador Spock thing obviously Spock the original Spock has died the young Spock is looking at this thing it says 2230.06 start date then it says to 2263.02 now that doesn't make sense if you do the math.
I think the idea is that she's pregnant with Spock's child. In The Search for Spock she had to help Spock when he underwent Pon Farr. As we learn in Amok Time, Pon Farr was fatal unless resolved, and the only way to overcome the Pon Farr was either through a "Passion Fight" with another male or through sexual intercourse with a female. I think it's highly unlikely that Spock fought against David to release his urges. Thus, the only real way to resolve the issue is to assume that Saavik had sex with Spock to help him survive. Many fans assume that Saavik didn't return with Kirk and company to Earth because she was pregnant with Spock's child.
@@bonghunezhou5051 Books are extremely relevant, they going to more detail then the movie does. The movie didn't tell you anything about her being pregnant...
I still think it is a small sin that Star Trek Stopped putting in the dedications to other space disasters. It could have been the thing like, something bad happens and a Trek film happens to be coming out? lets address it.. but sigh nope.
LOL when you show that scene from STV with Kirk on the cliff wall you can totally tell it's fiberglass. You can actually see the fiberglass fibers in the fiberglass matte. And it's just too shinny. Such power set building. Also the Enterprise turbo shaft. When they are going up the ladder you can actually see the set walls moving.
Phase 2 didn't "fail to gain traction." In 1977 with the success of Star Wars, Paramount realized they were sitting on a hot property with the Star Trek series and decided to make Star Trek TMP instead.
That was Rand, not Chapel. Grace Lee Whitney played Commander Rand not as a dewy-eyed yeoman or confused transporter officer, but as bitchy commander who obviously did not like Tuvok. Meh, she was a pon far cradle robber and Spock was hitting puberty. Plus, Spock would've died, again. I thought this was common knowledge? The big question is - Where's Spock kid...
I'll never understand why they choose Robin Curtis to replace Kirstie Alley. Kirstie in those days would have had guys lining up to get her pregnant. Robin, not so much.
Yeah, my favorite Trek movie is “The One With the Whales”.
He said they had to use the legal name but then kept talking about some journey home or something. The legal name is "the one with the whales".
it's a joke....

You mean you started with IV me too. But my next film to see was 5 in theaters.
It's obvious, with the name " Star Trek " they have to be connected somehow.
I was a teenager in San Francisco when this was being filmed and covered by the local news. Awesome times.
The special effects really hold up well in this film, especially the whale models.

make it so!
So, I'm guessing the whole "PREGNANT" thing from the thumbnail is in part 2?
I remember watching the Challenger shuttle. Live on tv with my father. Such a tragedy.
My dad and I watched that too. I was 5 or 6 and very confused.
Six Flags Over Ga. even eliminated a ride named the Challenger due to the tragedy. I'm glad they did.
My friend and I knew it was all BS back then long before the internet proved us right.
The scene with the transparent aluminum has always been a favorite, Not now Madeline!!
7:47 What? No, no, no! Rebecca Romjin must play both parts; Number One AND Nurse Chapel!
(I'm kidding. No, she mustn't. 😊)
Star Trek 4 also brought in a whole new audience. It expanded the Star Trek universe from the usual audience to bringing in save the wale activists
I just call it "Star Trek IV: Save the Whales!", cos, y'know, that was on bumper stickers all over the plac in the 80s and 90s... :P
Admiral, there be whales here!
Shut out Seán for his top work churning out so many videos recently! From a fellow Irishman!
Aw man I read the novel when I was like 9. When you mentioned it I teared up a little. ❤️
So where's the bit about Saavik being pregnant? I smell clickbate :(
I would assume in part 2. Maybe they split it in to 2 parts after the fact

I wonder if Vulcans have child support? 😄
Why wouldn't they? It would be dishonorable not to, since it's not the child's fault how it was conceived or who its parents were.
