    Building along? At 09:48 the formula should be ‘days’ not ‘Days’ if you get stuck here! Want to start building the rest of my task system? watch this next: ruclips.net/video/tpdD6pCHsEU/видео.html 😊

    I hope no one else got stuck at this but at 9:48, it's supposed to be "days" in small letters not "Days" because I just wasted 15+ mins screaming at my screen and trying to figure out why is the formula not working properly. Still a great tutorial non the less. Thanks! 😁
    Quick question, why is priority a checkbox?

    • @BetterCreating
      @BetterCreating  2 года назад

      Yeah, that’s mentioned elsewhere in these comments I think. Sorry to hear you got stuck! Priority is a check box to quickly add it to the priority dashboard view via a filter. But would work in other perhaps simpler ways. I also use a daily priority tag system now ✌️👍

      @@BetterCreating No problem. Okay that's how I thought it works at first but it still didn't make sense to me so I turned it into tags and just sorted it out instead of filtering.

So yes, we need more wonderful features, but if they do these three things very well, Notion will be ready for more powerful features.

    Hey, I really like your videos. For this one I think there's a slightly more elegant (and more flexible) solution. I have a frequency (number) and a unit property (select: years, months, weeks, days) and my formula for next due is: dateAdd(prop("due"), prop("frequency"), prop("unit")) This way I can repeat tasks in whatever frequency I like. Without having to hard code the frequencies into my formula.

      Thanks for sharing - nice solution - I will have a play with this approach. I've also been thinking about playing with creating templates for regular tasks so they can be quickly populated into a calendar view... we will see. or just wait for Notion to add a calendar function that solve it for us! Glad you are enjoying the vids. :)

    I figured out a way that I prefer. You set a "last completed date" for the recurring task, and set daily/weekly etc. Then in another column ("days left") you calculate the number of days until the task should be completed again. So a weekly task that was last completed on august 20 should be completed the next time on august 27. And in your recurring task lists you filter by tasks by "days left". When a task is completed you just set the "last completed date" to the current date.

    I like the interface. I understand you really are overwriting the next due date and you still need to select the next date based on the frequency.
    You don’t have a log of done tasks and the next due date is manually calculated with a possible mistake… is there a way to insert a date based on the moment you activate a check box in order to calculate the next due date and log save?

  • @motorcyclegirlfriends6935

    Workaround for the always 30 days bit!
    A bit cumbersome, but add another formula column that contains, " formatDate(now(), "MMMM, DD, YYYY") ", then in the Recur in Days, " if(prop("Recurring?") == "Monthly" and contains(prop("Date Now"), "November"), 30, " and so on, changing the 30 to the number of days in each corresponding month.
    In the new column all you really need is "MMMM" or just "M" if you change the Recur in Days formula accordingly, but the reference to the full current date might be useful for other formulas.

      I think I’ve worked out a better way to manage this process with a practice tracker - but it’s a little complicated: basically create a unit tag column (daily weekly etc) and a frequency column (number) and then make a formula that calculates them 1 x weekly (this is much better!). • @BetterCreating
      @BetterCreating  3 года назад +1

      Hi Scott, thanks for the message.well according to GTD and David Allen, a project is anything with more than one action needed to complete it. I think it depends on your life abs workflow how you choose to categorises them. I tend to group tasks to specific theatre / film projects, but then to things like wedding or bucket list (big things I want to do but don’t have a due date). I have projects like minimise or personal life in there for misc tasks that I want to process into the system from the inbox by adding them to a related project because that’s how my system works. Hope that helps! The main headline is: group tasks under whatever projects you want to keep track of as one process. Cheers for your support and the good question! 👊🙌

      Next due is the reference you use for using this simple recurring task system: instead of clicking done that hides the task, you change the due date to match the current due date abs this is how you reset the task for its next instance.

      Yes, you need to make sure all views are filtered by done being not checked. I suggest sorting the main database by the done column so completed tasks are at the bottom. You could also create a page with a copy of the database called ‘completed tasks bin’ or something and filter that to only show completed tasks. That way you could then always bulk delete completed tasks if you want to remove them forever. But I haven’t found the need. Hope that helps.

      I don’t believe there is an automatic function to delete pages in Notion using a checkbox ... but if anyone knows how to let us know! :)

    Does anyone know how to just repeat a day over a year. I just wanna make that a birthday date repeats everyyear on my calendar :((

    • @BetterCreating

      just repeat it over 365 days! or put it in a few times on the calendar? haha... Such a shame Notion still doesn't offer repeating calendar population! :)

    What about deadlines? We should have a deadline after which we need not do that work.

    • @BetterCreating
      @BetterCreating  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, totally an option: you could have a hard deadline date and something like a ‘do date’ as August Bradley does in his system

      @@BetterCreating Thanks for the reply. What I meant is: Putting a "deadline option" in the algorithm or code. Suppose, I have a task that I need to do till October 2, 2021 thrice a week. After that I need not to do that work. Therefore, we need a code that drive the task away after that specific last date, i.e. October 2. I hope it makes sense.

      Ah I see. Yes, that’s tricky: it needs perhaps a deadline date column and then something along the lines of (perhaps) ‘ if deadline is < today, then done is checked’ etc etc. Interesting idea. Wonder if possible…

      I figured it out! At the very end of the formula where it says “Days” ...it should NOT be a capital D! Hope this helps!

    Yeah still doesn't come close to how todoist offers these solutions!

      No true, but the value is in the complete system integration. That said: will be looking at a todoist / Notion API workflow soon perhaps. Cheers.

      @@BetterCreating Well it is true. Todoist actually accomplishes what these workarounds try to do. For what it is, todoist is fantastic, and I don't see why notion has to be an all in one solution at the expense of better alternatives for certain tasks. I understand the craving for an all in one, but until some solutions are more refined then it's just more hassle than it's worth.
