Dredging: Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers - How does it work?

Поделиться

  • Опубликовано: 16 янв 2018
  • Trailing suction hopper dredgers can fill their own holds (hoppers) by sucking material from the seabed using a trailing suction head fitted to pipes that trail over the bed as the ship sails. Trailing suction hopper dredgers can operate independently of other equipment and are able to transport the dredged material over long distances. The material can then be deposited through hatches in the bottom of the ship or by rainbowing. It can also be pumped ashore through a pipeline for land reclamation.

    @IADC Dredging (International Association of Dredging Companies) how powerful is the suction on a TSHD

    • @IADCDredging1
      @IADCDredging1  2 года назад +2

      Dear Rhona,
      The suction power of a TSHD depends on the power of the dredging pump, which relates to the size of the vessel. The larger the vessel, the more powerful is the dredge pump. IADC publishes vessel data on its website. Amongst the data is the power the dredge pump: www.iadc-dredging.com/publication/iadc-fleet-list-2021-2/

    • @IADCDredging1
      @IADCDredging1  3 года назад +10

      In general a TSHD is not used for dredging rock. Occasionally it can handle larger pieces of rock as long as they can pass the dredge pump.
      In the Melbourne channel deepening project, equipment was specially designed to dredge rock. See www.iadc-dredging.com/article/port-melbourne-environment/

    • @IADCDredging1
      @IADCDredging1  2 года назад +1

      Dear Zillur,
      The answer on your question depends on many factors. To name a few:
      • Depth and with of the river
      • Discharge of the river
      • Level of contamination
      • Material to be dredged
      • Available equipment.
      All these and other factors determine the costs of the dredging project. A straight answer can’t be given.

      Up to a certain level of rockiness, it can be dredged with a modified draghead. This so-called ripper draghead has been described in Terra et Aqua 118. When it is too rocky a Cutter Suction Dredger is necessary.

      • Deterrent - acoustic or different,
      • Exclusion - catch by trawling/hand caught and displace, screens at draghead, water intake (see email Wayne, dredging equipment (WID, TSHD, ..??); tickler chains (Brisbane Port video, Dredging industry), turtle deflector (US ACE), bubble screens to close of a basin,
      • Construction management: choice of equipment, pump procedure (jet pumps on before lowering drag head (deterring mechanism), then dredge pump on and reverse while raising), temporal windows, observers (visual or by sonar), avoidance of high spots for refuge (aka turtle chill out areas, dude),
