Nice. Wasn't on my radar. For similar budget one can also consider: Lumix GH5 or G9 Lumix S5 mk1 Fuji XH1 I'm sure there are many more. All great options with great lens choices. A few years ago these were all flagship cameras. As you said, no need to spend 1000's if you cant afford it.

Gotta admit, for that price I was expecting the original A7s, not the A7s II. We still use this camera to do Real Estate walk through videos, and I remember that it felt like a mini fortune brand new.
@@thefilmalliance Only one lens, the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G. The camera is always on a gimbal for video walk-through tours and we've never felt the need to upgrade to anything better. Sure, having the Z battery of the newer cameras would be fantastic, but we've actually found them to be harder to balance on a gimbal.
This is my camera. Nobody really did videos on it. Made it so hard for a beginner to set it up properly. I got the G 18-105 lense f.4, and I realized it never looked how I wanted it to look. I've been thinking about getting the zv-e1 and selling this one. Is that wise, or just get a better lense?
Keep that lens. I had one from my Sony APS-C kit and it is great to use with the ZV E1. That lens has the Power Zoom capability that will mate with the Zoom rocker on the ZVE1 giving you some great creative options. Also, when in Dynamic Active Stabilization mode, there will be no vignetting as there is an effective 1.3x crop in place.
The ZV-E1 might be a better option for what you're looking for. What are you primarily shooting? I know what you’re saying about no one made videos in it or hardly any. But hundreds have made videos in the zv-e1 so you should be good there.
Man I was so intrigued and about to look on ebay until you mentioned the battery it takes. I have a Zv-E10 II to test lenses sent to me by manufacturers (I'm a Canon guy otherwise) but that 1/30th shutter sync on the ZV is really weird. Was looking to get a Sony camera to mess around with that takes the FZ-100 since there's a bunch of them here because of work. Great video none the less. We shoot on A7sIII's for work and it's made me fall in love with the eco system. Love how accessible e-mount glass and variety is.
I really enjoy the Sony ecosystem as well, there is a lot of great glass out there. The battery life is pretty brutal but thankfully you can pick them up for pretty cheap.
The Lumix S5 is a fantastic value at only $700. It features impressive video capabilities, including 10-bit 4:2:2 H.264 V-Log recording. Notably, this profile's Lumix V-Log color science surpasses S-Log3 found in this camera, which is limited to 8-bit colour. Even today, the S5 remains highly competitive. In terms of video performance, it still outperforms the a7III with only 8-bit video and falls only slightly behind the a7SIII.
I got into the hobby with an A7RII. They serve me well for both vid and photo. I would highly recommend both A7SII and RII, either will make you super happy. :)
I switched to iPhone 16pro, specifically shooting footage I plan to use in my professional workflow in LOG, ideally on a gimbal with an nd filter. However applying some motion blur in post while shooting apple log in the stock camera app seems to get the job done as well. I was also looking for a highly packable camera rig, and a full body camera was not fitting with my idea of how packable I wanted. Looking back, it's not like a gimbal is much better LOL. Still, iPhones now are capable of being professional tools.
For the budding photographer, any of the Sony aps-c cameras will do nice That includes the NEX and a6000 line. One area that needs to be emphasized is the sheer number of Chinese lenses that sell for pennies on the dollar. And the ecosystem of Sony is HUGE. I just bought a 35mm 2.8 Zeiss lens for half the list price. It was in perfect condition. The used market is great for getting good stuff cheap.
@@backyardwindow I have a GH5 for video and I bought an a7s for photography with my vintage lenses, for around $150-200 more I was getting the a7s ii so I wondered if that would have been a better deal, but I like how much smaller the a7s is compared to a7sii, I wanted a compact full frame for my GAS problems, lol.
The a7s2 was my main video camera, but 2 years ago was substituted by the fx30. I keep the a7s2 for astrophotography (but I do less due to lack of time).
I recently picked up a used one of these just for low light use for astrophotography. Well come to find out when comparing it to my original Sony a9. The low light capabilities just wasn’t as much of a difference as I thought it should have been. The a7s2 still was a bit better but definitely not enough to justify keeping it. Sold the a7s2 and kept the a9.

Joe, been with you since the beginning before you hit 1k! Had a question, I'm doing golf content and I need a good zoom camera. I see these guys using bigger cameras and I don't know what they are. Itnis not an fx6, looks like it but its not. They are not using anything like a fx3. What would be a good camera for this kind of content? Thanks for all the help you've given me over the years
Thanks for being a long time fan! Honestly, the zoom lens is the more important purchase. I'd get a Sony zoom lens for that camera and you're good to go. It would be better then the big cameras you see those guys with
I've had my Sony a7s Mark 1 since 2018 that i got for 1000 USD including 2 lenses. I use it to this day as an everyday carry paired up with Zeiss FE 35mm f2.8.
I personally use a Sony A7S Mark I. For someone who prefers using S-Log2 and doesn't really need IBIS (I use a gimbal when shooting), it gets all my work done. The only negative thing I can really say about it is the autofocus isn't as good as the mark ii, but I do use manual focus most of the time so it isn't really a problem for me, and they are waaaay cheaper too. I'm building up my FE Lens selection with it!
You can probably assign C1 or C2 as the video start and stop button instead of that awful positioned Video record button. I was able to do it on a Sony A6300.
i got first gen a7r for 300 and its awesome for high res photos (i have another camera this was just to break into the sony ecosystem) but my god in anything but perfect conditions the images are so grainy they appear on the food pyramid
I did saw the A7sii for that price around my local area. But I can't figure out whether I want the A7sii, the A7ii or just get a a6400. Currently more photo focused than video focus and mostly for school events. The search continues.
@thefilmalliance This is gonna be first time buyer so based on guesstimates, a couple of scenarios come to mind. Possibly a 16mm-50mm for wider shots and close or studio style potraits, 18mm-135mm for small to medium stage events and 55mm-210mm for long range sports and big hall events. If I go APSC then crop factor applies and I'll probably switch the 16-50 to a standard 14mm just to capture larger crowds or go 18-135mm and get a 14mm prime. I'll also most likely not take the 55-210 since the 18-135 will crop to match with slightly more or less magnification. If I go full frame then I'll probably just get a 24-50, coupled with a telephoto zoom around the 55-210 or 70mm-300mm. But those are huge and expensive. Either way I'm still getting some primes I'll probably get a 14mm, either 50mm or 70mm portrait and zoom and possibly a telephoto somewhere along the line for APSC and a 16mm ultrawide, also either 50mm or 70mm and telephoto if primes exists for them. Of course I'm also not sure what other lens options exists so probably have some wrong here and there. Still a lot to think about since the environment I'm in also plays a huge role in choosing the right camera and lens combo for the job so probably won't be a simple conclusion 😂.
@@joelconolly5574 all of those are aps-c lenses, and the image circle isn't big enough to cover the full frame sensor, so get the a6400. However, I'd suggest getting an A7II (more MPx for photos compared to s2) and look into Zeiss 24-70 f4, since it's full frame, constant aperture, has IS, and it's dirt cheap. I've seen the A7II go for 350 bucks, and the Zeiss lens for about 200 use which is enourmos value for first system. Looking away from the Sony system, a Nikon Z6 with 24-70 f4 is also a great combo and can be found for about 800 USD which is leagues above the Sony's you are looking at.
Really interested in my 1st full frame mirrorless. Never tried Sony yet coming from Nikon & Canon. How well do the autofocus adapters work w/ vintage glass? Or in camera focus assist?

@@RoyalPrent If you saw my post above, the production units that used the 7s2 , the cameras were built out with a battery pack, focus follow, and a wireless rig that transmits back to the production tent. The a7s3 is a superior product. Ymmv.
I personally can't wait for the A7C III, so that I can find a great second hand deal on the A7C II heh - what's frustrating about all Sony cameras from 2-3+ years ago is the 8 bit 4:2:0. The 10 bit 4:2:2 in recent bodies has made such a profound leap forward. The ZV-E1 bodies are starting to surface at pretty amazing prices on the second hand market with the legendary FX3 sensor and the AI chip from the A7R5.
Hey there, Im excited for the a7c iii as well, but who knows how long that will take. Yes, I know what you mean. the 4:2:2 10-bit is great for certain situations, but don't forget the file sizes will be much larger
@@thefilmalliance you would think but the HEVC compression makes up for it so it’s still smaller files than previous cameras for still superior detail and colour information. Previously computers really struggled with those files but even the $600 Mac mini easily crunches through them :)

I prefer buying a used gear. If you search carefully you can buy lenses in exellent condition. In my experience buying a 35mm f1.4 za and 85mm f1.8 two must have focal leight for photography. Nice video!
Iv got 2x as7m2 and i still go back to my trusty mark 1 a7s the og. Am i wrong? Alot of ppl hates the old color science of old sony sensors but am i wrong for loving it so much that it actually gives me old 80s early 90s filmic look straight out of camera? 😢😢😢😂😂😂
For everybody considering a camera with lens under 1000$, just get the Lumix S5 with the kit lens. On the used market you can get that for 700$ and it has everything but Autofocus. The AF is no problem on talking head etc because you have a flipscreen.
@@thefilmalliance No, I have the Lumix S5 II and just got it for 1400€ with the Kit lens. I bought that one because it is more future proof and through updates gets even better. The firmware updates and price is why I stay away from Sony. I like the a6400 tho but basically is same price as the Lumix S5 II so easy decision. Keep up the good work and maybe switch it up and do some Lumix content.

I have seen Sony A7M3 going brand new for 899€ this year so it should be even cheaper on the used market and it's basically the first "modern generation" Sony mirrorless so I would probably choose it instead of A7S2. Iphone 16 Pro Max is a wonderful video tool if you record Apple ProRes Log.

It would be a great choice for low light, but if you want to color grade, then the camera will need to have a good dynamic range. I think this would work for short films for you

Maybe a refurbished Canon RP could be a better investment as a mature mirrorless camera, but then again I am just use cameras for photography, not sure how good, or not, in comparison to this Sony.
The Sony camera is cheaper so if you are concerned about investment that may be the best option, also don’t forget about the vast lenses you can get with Sony Emount

Low-light (high-iso) "monochromatic" photography in MF : That is a subject all by itself that I find tremendously ..under-investigatet. No collaborative website to my knowledge, (??) that tries to standardize and compare criteria.. in matters of how much prone hey are to flicker, banding, compare e-shutter e-first shutter Silent mechanical true strobe sync, important : shutter delays ! etc. or is the A1mk2 truly simply crash all the predessessors in these regards (even though not real 1/400 conventional flash sync, has no anti-flicker in pre-shpot mode !) ?
@@thefilmalliance I mostly use a 200-600 Sony G lens for bird photography. I have a 24mm Tamron F2.8 and a minolta 50mm F 1.7(used with the electronic adapter for minolta lenses) also have the 28-70 F3.5 ...for non-critical shooting
@@thefilmalliance well..non-critical means casual...If I go to a car show will will the 24 or 50... if i am wandering around, I would bring the short zoom. The 200-600 is great for birding!..a little heavy, but worth it.

I used 2 copies of A7SII and autofocus is a joke. I've never seen worse autofocus in sony system, especially in low light situations. Even a a6000 works better in this aspect. So when you like to use sony for one hand usage NEVER consider that camera, beacuse you have to use only manual focus. (tested lenses: sony 50 1.8, sony 28 2.0, samyang 35 1.4, zeiss 24-70 4.0, sigma 28-45 1.8 and from asp-c: sigma 16 1.4 and sigma 18-50 2.8)
Sony cameras are usually outdated even at launch. Buying old Sony cameras are definitely not a good idea, and their quality is too bad to buy second hand ones (let us not start discussing old Sony camera menu/software)
Beware, these cameras are not very durable. I own 2 A7sii's. Both reject SD cards-- they go into a boot loop. Same situation for my OG A7s and 2 AX100s so it's probably an issue with the reader and caused by operating heat.
People can't dump the overpriced digital cameras fast enough nowadays. Prices for used digital camera gear are falling quickly. That sht is not valuable.

The only negative thing I can really say about it is the autofocus isn't as good as the mark ii, but I do use manual focus most of the time so it isn't really a problem for me, and they are waaaay cheaper too. I'm building up my FE Lens selection with it!

Well, the A7iii with the BSI CMOS sensor has pretty close ISO performance to the A7S. I sold my A7S after testing both side by side.

Check out the z5 if you want low light capability with a lower peice tag…got mine used for 599 and can adapt a whole lot of lenses i own on it

I did saw the A7sii for that price around my local area. But I can't figure out whether I want the A7sii, the A7ii or just get a a6400. Currently more photo focused than video focus and mostly for school events. The search continues.
What lenses do you own or plan to own?
@thefilmalliance This is gonna be first time buyer so based on guesstimates, a couple of scenarios come to mind. Possibly a 16mm-50mm for wider shots and close or studio style potraits, 18mm-135mm for small to medium stage events and 55mm-210mm for long range sports and big hall events.
If I go APSC then crop factor applies and I'll probably switch the 16-50 to a standard 14mm just to capture larger crowds or go 18-135mm and get a 14mm prime. I'll also most likely not take the 55-210 since the 18-135 will crop to match with slightly more or less magnification.
If I go full frame then I'll probably just get a 24-50, coupled with a telephoto zoom around the 55-210 or 70mm-300mm. But those are huge and expensive.
Either way I'm still getting some primes I'll probably get a 14mm, either 50mm or 70mm portrait and zoom and possibly a telephoto somewhere along the line for APSC and a 16mm ultrawide, also either 50mm or 70mm and telephoto if primes exists for them. Of course I'm also not sure what other lens options exists so probably have some wrong here and there.
Still a lot to think about since the environment I'm in also plays a huge role in choosing the right camera and lens combo for the job so probably won't be a simple conclusion 😂.
@@joelconolly5574 all of those are aps-c lenses, and the image circle isn't big enough to cover the full frame sensor, so get the a6400. However, I'd suggest getting an A7II (more MPx for photos compared to s2) and look into Zeiss 24-70 f4, since it's full frame, constant aperture, has IS, and it's dirt cheap. I've seen the A7II go for 350 bucks, and the Zeiss lens for about 200 use which is enourmos value for first system. Looking away from the Sony system, a Nikon Z6 with 24-70 f4 is also a great combo and can be found for about 800 USD which is leagues above the Sony's you are looking at.
Really interested in my 1st full frame mirrorless. Never tried Sony yet coming from Nikon & Canon.

@@RoyalPrent If you saw my post above, the production units that used the 7s2 , the cameras were built out with a battery pack, focus follow, and a wireless rig that transmits back to the production tent. The a7s3 is a superior product. Ymmv.
I personally can't wait for the A7C III, so that I can find a great second hand deal on the A7C II heh - what's frustrating about all Sony cameras from 2-3+ years ago is the 8 bit 4:2:0. The 10 bit 4:2:2 in recent bodies has made such a profound leap forward.
The ZV-E1 bodies are starting to surface at pretty amazing prices on the second hand market with the legendary FX3 sensor and the AI chip from the A7R5.

Hey there, Im excited for the a7c iii as well, but who knows how long that will take. Yes, I know what you mean. the 4:2:2 10-bit is great for certain situations, but don't forget the file sizes will be much larger
@@thefilmalliance you would think but the HEVC compression makes up for it so it’s still smaller files than previous cameras for still superior detail and colour information. Previously computers really struggled with those files but even the $600 Mac mini easily crunches through them :)

I prefer buying a used gear. If you search carefully you can buy lenses in exellent condition. In my experience buying a 35mm f1.4 za and 85mm f1.8 two must have focal leight for photography. Nice video!

For everybody considering a camera with lens under 1000$, just get the Lumix S5 with the kit lens. On the used market you can get that for 700$ and it has everything but Autofocus. The AF is no problem on talking head etc because you have a flipscreen.

@@thefilmalliance No, I have the Lumix S5 II and just got it for 1400€ with the Kit lens. I bought that one because it is more future proof and through updates gets even better. The firmware updates and price is why I stay away from Sony. I like the a6400 tho but basically is same price as the Lumix S5 II so easy decision. Keep up the good work and maybe switch it up and do some Lumix content.

I have seen Sony A7M3 going brand new for 899€ this year so it should be even cheaper on the used market and it's basically the first "modern generation" Sony mirrorless so I would probably choose it instead of A7S2.
Iphone 16 Pro Max is a wonderful video tool if you record Apple ProRes Log.

It would be a great choice for low light, but if you want to color grade, then the camera will need to have a good dynamic range. I think this would work for short films for you

Maybe a refurbished Canon RP could be a better investment as a mature mirrorless camera, but then again I am just use cameras for photography, not sure how good, or not, in comparison to this Sony.
The Sony camera is cheaper so if you are concerned about investment that may be the best option, also don’t forget about the vast lenses you can get with Sony Emount

@@thefilmalliance I mostly use a 200-600 Sony G lens for bird photography. I have a 24mm Tamron F2.8 and a minolta 50mm F 1.7(used with the electronic adapter for minolta lenses) also have the 28-70 F3.5 ...for non-critical shooting

I used 2 copies of A7SII and autofocus is a joke. I've never seen worse autofocus in sony system, especially in low light situations. Even a a6000 works better in this aspect. So when you like to use sony for one hand usage NEVER consider that camera, beacuse you have to use only manual focus. (tested lenses: sony 50 1.8, sony 28 2.0, samyang 35 1.4, zeiss 24-70 4.0, sigma 28-45 1.8 and from asp-c: sigma 16 1.4 and sigma 18-50 2.8)

Sony cameras are usually outdated even at launch. Buying old Sony cameras are definitely not a good idea, and their quality is too bad to buy second hand ones (let us not start discussing old Sony camera menu/software)

Beware, these cameras are not very durable. I own 2 A7sii's. Both reject SD cards-- they go into a boot loop. Same situation for my OG A7s and 2 AX100s so it's probably an issue with the reader and caused by operating heat.
