    I think the chorus of this song is about how Mathias feels about the band. Real life may be boring at time, but when he's with the band, he's completely in his element.

    My personal interpretation of this video is that I think that Mathias has repented of the cruel acts committed by his ancestors, and so He redeems himself killing the managers... managers viewed as cruel people who think only about money and kill with their decisions the fate of millions of innocent people!

    • @Deadrocker93
      @Deadrocker93 10 лет назад +2

      He's upset that his ancestors raided villages and killed civilians (despite the fact that everyone has ancestors who committed acts that by today's standards would be unseemly), so he decides, as a means of repentance, to kill more civilians? Damn, I'd hate to see how he repents when he actually commits a crime, rather then repenting for a crime committed by his forefathers... :P

      Bjorn Odinson in my opinion, in music, poetry and sometimes even movies, the message could be everything, depending what the single person think, in this case i like to think that the video was about society now and society then, and the nostalgic trought that in the past was better, more cruel and brutal but very clear, in that time you knowed where you have to go and strike, now the free spirit and the will of the man is soffocate and things are more tricky and hard to explain, the lyrics basically talks about somone that lost himself so i think that was referring about humanity.

    • @albymark93
      @albymark93 10 лет назад

      Bjorn Odinson
      I am convinced of what I learned from this video ... and Mathias has been able to create to us a nice story with it, with his ironic and cutting style :D

  • @chiarabonazzi4952
    @chiarabonazzi4952 10 лет назад +33

    I'm quite sure that the modern-Mathias IS the ancient Mathias who came from the past as spirit of the history who hates the present time

    • @vouge6750
      @vouge6750 8 лет назад +1

      +Chiara Bonazzi Or, he's the descendant of the ''good guy'' and his co-workers are the descendants of the raiders. it's like a kind of vengeance here. It's the only explanation I see...

    • @chiarabonazzi4952
      @chiarabonazzi4952 8 лет назад +3

      days after writing my comment I read a small interview with Mathias about this video. someone asked him why he killed innocent people and he said something like: "Are you sure those were really innocent?" he said nothing more. So now I think that the people of the village were the ancestors of the tablet-men.

  • @WinterForWolves

    Excellent band. The present-day businessmen are comparable to the raiders of yesteryear, who mercilessly pick on the disenfranchised, poor, and unprotected. Current-day Nygård, sitting in his meeting, thinking back on all this, redeems his 11th century, civilian-slaying self and uses the same exact sword to bring justice (in an unconventional way) to the modern world.

    I like to think that when we sing "Who will be there when the sky turn grey? Turisas! You can count on us!" we are also counting on Thor, the norse god. For the ones curious about the connection between the band Turisas and Thor, Thor's rune is called Thurisaz. I am not sure if it was their intention, but for me, who follows the north path, this connection is beautiful.

    Personally I think this song is about life. You can stay in a stale stagnant life, content to live each day as the one before, or you can "Stop crying in your beer" and make try to make a change to how you live.
    "Sail against the wind if that's what it takes," is saying if you want change you have to fight for it. It is telling you to stand up and fight for what you want to achieve, not to be content with a dull existence. Victory goes to the one who tires hardest, that sort of thing.

    i have mixed feelings about this song, though it is fairly good, and it still feels like Turisas for the most part, but as a first look into this album, i am not as blown away as i was when i first heard The Varangian Way or Stand Up And Fight.

    • @femoman
      @femoman 9 лет назад +2

      Yeah, agreed. It's still a great album, but compared to the massive, bombastic awesomeness of the previous 2 albums, it seems sorta lacking. For one thing they really dialled back the orchestration it seems, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. It sounds like they only have half the orchestral ensemble they had last time, which is a shame. Take the songs from Turisas 2013, redo them with the orchestral ensemble they had for Stand Up and Fight, and it would be awesomeness!

    From what I can decipher, it reads: "Fenrir's Hales"
    Hales, in Norwegian, means overhaul. The British equivalent for overhaul is overtake.
    Therefore: I think the sword is named "Fenrir's Bane" when you consider the context.

    Whilst the Varangians were mostly noble and honourable warriors, remember that ultimately they were mercenaries. They were predominantly Viking warriors who travelled to Byzantium to seek riches and had gained experience beforehand by raiding villages around Europe. Lamellar armour was also quite common as it has also been found in Birka which is in Sweden and many Guardsmen went home after a few years service and would have taken their war gear with them.

    No, but even if you disagree with or dislike something it costs absolutely nothing to show people who do agree with it some respect, instead of bashing them at every opportunity. Everyone is entitled to respect, but whether you deserve it or not is determined by your actions. Just because somebody holds a different view to you does not mean that you can't respect them and their views.

    In the runic script used on the sword (Elder Futhark, 2nd-8th century), the W & V were written as P with a pointed tip (rather than as a Ϸ as you suggest), so it's highly possible it DOES say "Fenrirs Haven" we just can't see the other half on the V rune due to the angle of the sword.

    I think the symbolism behind the video is all about rebelling against organised society and its constricting rules and that the way of the nomadic warrior is the noblest calling one can have.
    The costumes that the raiding party have on are consistent with that of the Varangian Guard according to the discription given in the song "The March of the Varangian Guard". They are supposed to be heroes liberating people from all forms of imprisonment.

    I believe the motif here is that the character in our modern world where personal accomplishment and collective brotherhood hold little value is longing for a simpler and more direct time. There's nothing wrong with that, and it is an element of the romantic and Byronic hero. As for the historical element, lets be clear here: the 'innocent villagers' were in many ways just as warlike and war capable, and the wealth Scandinavians took was taken from monasteries because that's where the money was.
