In the few crappy news videos I've seen like this, I belive they said they said the odysseus craft deployed a camera to be able to capture it. It's so hard to find minute by minute updates about this lander. Even information about the spherical lens picture that showed part of the lander and the moon. I can't tell if that is just before impact of if it's on its side. There's no readily available knowledge that states what we are seeing in this picture. It pisses me off kinda.

In 1969 they used analog communication and there were loads of scientists all over the world working on it. There were also people in the spacecraft, and a command module orbiting to relay communications.
This mission landed near one of the poles and used digital communication straight from the spacecraft. That is much more difficult and takes time to decode, and as this wasn't a PR exercise they didn't waste bandwidth on a camera to entertain you and me with pointless images.

Being able to launch from the lunar surface as there is no atmosphere hence very little fuel wastage and resources needed for crafts. Making it possible to use salvaged weight for either more fuel or more life system support.
To be a moon station for better earth observations and orbit missions. Also, for scientific experimentation on the moon surface as it's better than any re-creation on earth.

Praying the 1,500 people who left the Miami port to see Antarctica will get their money back now that they suddenly canceled the Antarctica stop after leaving. So much to speculate here.
