- In this video Drive By Reviews changes the oil and filter on his Chevy Cruze LTZ 2012. This is a relevant video for any chevy cruze from 2008-2015 as Chevrolet changed the cruze model in 2016+. This is a step by step how to video and walkthrough on changing oil, changing the filter, and using an Engine Performance Restoration treatment from BG products on the 1.4 Liter Turbo engine in the Chevy Cruze LTZ. Also, DBR uses MOA additive (another BG product) to the fully synthetic Pennzoil Platinum oil to improve oil and engine performance. Changing oil is a relatively easy process however there are some simple rules and tricks to follow that can make it an enjoyable experience instead of an aggravating one. Notes:
- Relevant for Chevy Cruze models from 2011-2015
- Dip stick is only accurate when parked on a level surface (which is where you should be changing oil anyways)
- Technically you should change the filter before draining oil with top side oil filters.There is a plug that sits in the filter canister that keeps a small quantity of oil (~1/4 quart) up in the canister to prevent dry starting the motor. If the filter is changed after draining the pan, the old oil in the canister will drain down into the pan and will not be removed.
- The torque specs for the oil pan bolt is 14 Nm (~10 Ft lbs) considered just past hand tight.
- After changing the oil and filling to the top of the dip stick instead of waiting for the first drive, you can just drive around the block and park on a level surface and recheck the oil level. After this you should get pretty close to the 4.25 quarts the manual calls for.

After you add oil up to the dipstick mark the first time, start the engine and get the oil circulating for about 30 seconds. Turn it off and check your oil level again. Once you fill it back up to the dipstick mark the second time, that should be its final level.

Jiffy Lube always charged me up to $85 for a full synthetic oil change. Big reason why I finally started doing it myself.

Great how-to video. However, Never, Never add oil treatment to synthetic oil. The engine oil formulators (that I have worked with) are always pushing solubility of critical ingredients to get performance, soooooo when you add a potentially incompatible oil treatment you could "drop out of solubility" the friction modifiers, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, detergents etc that you are already paying for in a synthetic to protect your engine. The ingredients that could "drop out" become "unwanted engine deposits", again one of the benefits of what you want from a synthetic. Watch out for "buddies" with no real knowledge of engine oil formulation. Also, Mobil 1 was the first and still the king of synthetic since they make the majority of the synthetic PAO base stock. Other brands are just selling additive packages mixed in Mo-chem PAO base stock. Regardless, just change your oil regularly and you'll be fine.

I would add that after filling oil, start the engine, run for about 30 seconds, then shut off and check oil again as the filter is now full of oil so oil level on dipstick may have gone down some. A great instructional video, this suggestion is just an FYI

save yourself $40. Dont waste your time on oil additives. They do nothing but lighten your wallet. A full synthetic ,or full synthetic for high mileage cars is more than enough to take care of your engine. I currently have 160k miles on my cruze Eco and just replaced the valve cover gasket. No gunk or build up to be found. Use the proper oil and change it regularly and you won't have any gunk build up. Period.

My car is a 2013 Chevy Cruze LTZ with 98k miles, and the owner manual says dexos1 approved oil only, else potential engine issues not covered by warranty. Yet I buy O'Reilly High Mileage brand that matches everything recommended (SAE 5W30, full synthetic, says on bottle "for modern turbocharged gasoline engines"), just doesn't have the dexos1 sticker. Comes recommended on their website as well for my exact car.
Does that just mean O'Reilly didn't pay for the sticker certification?
I like to use Castrol Edge full synthetic 5w30 on my 2011chevy cruze 1.4L turbo LTZ.

Good video, but I recommend Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5w-30. Extremely high quality and long lasting, and it beats Mobil One full synthetic head to head.

I can’t find the video I’m looking for but you was replacing the trunk latch on your Chevy Cruze I wanted to know what was the 4 screws there for?

My only suggestion is get a torgue wrench for the drain plug and take the cap off up top to get even more air flow for a faster drain
Good video, but the reason that the oil level looks right before you have filled the recommended amount because the oil filter takes about a quarter of a liter to fill and you also added the additive.
The filters Fram makes for this particular car are actually made a lot better than the AC Delco equivalent... Plus, Fram isn’t a bad filter the orange can is generally used longer than it supposed to be. And the Fram Ultra has an almost cult following because of quality of construction and longevity.

Pro tips my friend you want to clean it the filter cap with degreaser medium strength and rinse completely

Did you have to replace the oil pan drain bolt constanty, because it was aluminum and they strip easily.
No, I go by torque specs and have never stripped a bolt. However, years ago I switched to a top side extractor that pulls the oil out of the dip stick chute. Much easier with lower cars; I currently daily drive a 124 Spider Abarth
And now I need a new oil pan, That oil plug is made of tin foil, stripped it with a hand tool.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get a stripped plug off so I just need to replace the plug????
Someone put it on too tight if it stripped, it's designed to avoid ruining the pan. Probably best to have a mechanic do it or you can just switch to an extractor and forget using the bolt. I use the mighty vac these days and enjoy not needing to get under anymore
I've got four cars from 150,000 to 344,000. I've NEVER used an oil additive in any of them and I've never changed any of the engines or had them rebuilt.
I have a Toyota pickup with 200k and regular oil changes. Did an oil change about 1000 miles ago and added the BG additive, and I can say it does make a difference

When changing your oil the oil has to reach the bottom of the engine to fill up to the dipstick. You should add oil let it settle somewhat to the bottom then check it. Also if the engine is hot and u add oil it will change the volume of the oil. NEVER CHECK YOUR OIL if your car is hot it wont be accurate level. Its a good video but your missing some mechanics of an oil change. Simple isn't the word. You also didn't check your crush washer on your oil pan plug to see if it needed to be replaced. That is critical to keeping the oil plug from leaking.

@@code123red Please, do not buy a Cruze. For the love of God and your bank account, stay away. Run for the hills. Alas, I fear I may be too late, for you posted your comment a year before I did. There are many reasons why you should avoid the Cruze (and pretty much all things GM) like the plague, but I will boil it down to the guaranteed ones, the really maddening ones, and/or the costly ones. One of these problems has a 100% chance of occurring before 75,000 miles in every Cruze with the 1.4L turbocharged engine ever made. The other problems are more than likely to occur sooner than you would like.
1. PCV system failure. I put the failure ceiling at 75k, but is more likely to happen at or before 50k miles. Chevy used rubber check valves in the intake manifold and at the turbo inlet. What do you think hot gases do to rubber? These WILL fail, and when they do, it's only a matter of time before the pressure-regulator diaphragm in the valve cover goes. Unless you know how to replace the check valve in the intake manifold with a more robust brass valve and rubber hose kit (I do), you will end up replacing it with an OEM kit that'll fail in a short period of time.
2. Transmission. My 2013 LTZ has the 1.4 Ecotec engine with the automatic. The transmission is slipping and the car has only 65k on it. This transmission is notoriously weak and poorly engineered. Internet forums are dedicated to this problem.
3. The turbocharger sucks. When it works, it does the job nicely. But it is prone to failure, with many Cruze owners complaining it failed under 50,000 miles. Unless you do it yourself, that's easily a $1,000 repair bill.
4. The cooling system. It leaks at the water-outlet valve and where the reservoir-return hose connects to the outlet valve. I just replaced both; it was a simple repair, but one I shouldn't have had to do. Why the f*ck would Chevy bolt a plastic valve housing to the side of a metal engine block that gets very hot? Also, the hose connects to the valve housing via a proprietary connection instead of a simple nipple and hose clamp. That means you have to buy it from the dealer or Amazon to replace it. Bullshit.
5. The HVAC system is a breeding ground for mold. At some point, your car will start to reek like dirty socks. Only solution is to take it to the dealer and have them reprogram the computer to keep the blower running for 5 mins after you shut the engine off. That's a $280 job that takes about 45 mins. This dries out the ducts. You can also have them spray a cleaner down the ducts.
I loved my Cruze when I drove it off the lot. I wish I had never bought it. It is poorly engineered, GM knows about the flaws, and it won't issue a recall, much less a technical service bulletin. Save yourself the headache and buy a Toyota. Avoid GM products.

Question, did you use a mix of both oils? Or were they the same? Becuase I thought it comes with 5 quarts
you only need about 4.5 quarts or so to fill up the cruze. just save that oil in case your car leaks or you can add to the next bottle of oil. Eventually you'll have enough for an oil change. Also note the green swish on the bottom of the label on the oil. That's Dexos 1 rated. which is all you need engine treatments do nothing.
I felt like I was ....in a class tbh . I thought i was learning mechanics for a second and forgot that my chevy cruze is out of oil :(. How did that happen?? Yesterday the "sensor" stated 53°/• of oil life remaining, but my engine overheated yesterday and now t states no engine oil, sometimes I wish I actually learned mechanics at school or something because mechanics now a days are very untrustworthy and a pain in the wallet. Oil life is not the same as oil level.
I put accidentally put high mileage oil in my 15 Chevy Cruze eco but it has 60k on the dash .. is this bad? It says 75k and above but will it really mess w anything?
there are some things to consider but the main point would be to use dexos approved oil to not void the warranty. Generally you don't need to switch to high mileage until much later than 60k.
Are the supplements only for turbo cars? I have a 2011 Chevy Malibu
dont bother the supplements are a wallet drainer and do nothing for your engine other than make you feel like you've done something. Just use the correct oil and filter and change both regularly. The synthetic oils he showed has enough detergents to keep the gunk out of any part of your engine. The cruze requires at least a Dexos 1 oil or higher. Synthetics are typically Dexos 2. yes, its top side. you would need to let the engine sit off for a bit. but just change it every oio change and you're good

It’s not exactly apples to apples, but my ‘12 1.4T Eco gets around 35-40, cruising between 70-75 on the freeway, and 30-35 cruising around town.
