Tamashii no Refrain - Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth Theme Song [Piano]

Compared to A Cruel Angel's Thesis, the theme song of the first Evangelion movie "Death & Rebirth" is fairly unknown outside of Japan. Which is completely undeserved, because the powerful chorus in Tamashii no Refrain is simply unforgettable and it makes me shiver every time I listen to it.
The original song from 1997 had a synthesizer bass rhythm, which was continuing through the entire piece, but I occasionally used some rhythmical variations to make it a little bit more interesting for the piano. It is especially audible in the first verse 01:25 and in the second chorus 03:27
I was also experimenting how to arrange the majestic choir part in the bridge in 02:39. The first draft of my arrangement was actually just playing the chords without anything else added. But it didn't have the same spiritual atmosphere as the original song and I felt like something was still missing on the piano. After some thinking, I remembered there was a similar choir part from A Cruel Angel's Thesis. I included the same rhythmic pattern for this particular choir part as well and the piano was finally creating a sound I was initially looking for.
The second verse in 02:58 was deliberately arranged in a calm atmosphere to serve as a direct contrast to the earlier dramatic choir part. I let the music slowly build up until it reaches the second chorus 03:27, which is played in staccato this time. I was also thinking for a while how to arrange the finale because the original song's enigmatic ending is hard to translate into the piano. At the end, I decided to use a simple improvised melody line in 04:47 to bring this arrangement to a conclusion.
Well then, that's it for this week's upload. I am surprised that some Anime songs are still super popular in Japan while being virtually unknown elsewhere in the world. Since I have been arranging all those decade old Anime songs recently, the next weeks arrangement is going to be another nostalgia song. Pretty sure most of the people here are very familiar with the next one as well.

「魂のルフラン」を初めて聴いたのはバンドリだったことを認めなければならないね。この曲はすぐに好きになったし、実は日本では「残酷な天使のテーゼ」とまではいかなくても人気のカラオケ曲だと後から知りました。
本当に美しい曲なのに何で今まで知らなかったんだろう。最近はずっとリピートしているよ (´・ω・｀)
I have to admit, I also heard Tamashii no Refrain for the first time, when I was playing BanG Dream. But the song really grew on me quickly and I discovered later on, it's actually one of the most popular Karaoke songs in Japan, among Cruel Angel Thesis.
It is a really beautiful song though, so I was wondering how I have missed out that song for such a long time. Nowadays I listen to it on repeat (´・ω・｀)

A little simpler of an arrangement this week, yet just as pleasing to listen to as always. The simplicity of the technique actually allowed me to focus on and enjoy the harmonics a little more than usual, as reflected in my comments below.
The way the high notes hang at 0:38 really create a heightened sense of tension before transitioning into the regular tempo opening passage. Kinda feels like the trumpets that blow as a bull is about to make its charge towards a matador (bullfighter). What a great entrance.
I really enjoy the sound and execution of the B7 A#dim7 D#7 chord progression that occurs at 0:23, 2:07, 3:39, 4:13, especially the way the B7 provides a sense of ease, followed by a tension created by the diminished A# that is then again released when the chord figuratively and literally "sinks" down (in particular, the G# -> G) into the D# chord. The 4:13 iteration is arpeggiated instead which replaces the tension/release style with a nice alternative abrupt transition into the D#7.
The high register passage at 2:39 really helps to release the "heaviness" of the previous passage as it transitions into the following lighter section. Well executed.
The third hand melody at 4:01. I don't usually comment on the third hand melody because it usually shows up in every arrangement, but this one stood out a little more than usual. Perhaps it's the melody being in a higher octave than my brain is accustomed to hearing that makes it sparkle a little more. Caught me as a nice stylistic choice.
The attention to detail on phrasing and touch is really what gives your arrangements that extra "wow" factor for me. There are always little surprises that make your arrangements really enjoyable. Thank you as always for sharing, and well done!

@Zengarang I agree with the simplicity of the musical arrangement and yet the high notes feels sublime... @Animenz as a comment the tempo in 1:24 - 1:28 feels out of sync, of course this could be a mis concepcion but is quite understable since the arrangement need a pause or a best way of transition in this part, the same goes for 1:02 to 1:07. Anyway, i like it so much! keep working hard
Whole-heartedly agree. A lot of Animenz's work has that effect; where even if you know the tune and it has a familiar sense, there's still surprises to keep it exciting and on your feet to listen more and in a detailed way. Only a small percentage of music I listen to has this effect so I think it really does speak to how awesome his arrangements are.

At the beginning of the theme song of the first Evangelion movie "Death & Rebirth", which was played with the piano by Animenz, the main melody gave me a strong feeling of unusual heavy atmosphere. In the meanwhile, I could not stand but was deeply touched by the song deriving from the musical scenery arranged by Animenz.
I still wonder why Animenz could play the song with such a soul-touching feeling. Maybe there were somethings in Japan or on the websites that deeply touched his intrinsic emotions in the recent days!
I heard this from Bang dreams and immediately fall in love with this. What pains me is not many know about this song
