I think my lowkey favorite part of this is seeing how Peter has really grown into being the captain of the Guardians, they all respect him so much now.
Seeing him in this felt like Peter has been so super-focused on being a good, reliable, responsible leader, both to The Guardians, and to the people who live in Knowhere, that he's gotten a bit haggard and let himself go physically, which is common for people who carry overwhelming responsibilities and focus completely on others.
Glad she got more to do here, she was great in this! And we get to see her have more range and get angry - not to mention the final scene was actually really touching
At first I thought this was just going to be a money grab but I never should have underestimated James Gunn and the Guardians’ ability to make me laugh and cry. This is GOTG 2.5 and I love how it actually takes the characters and story further.
Mantis being Peter’s sister in the MCU has been a theory going around since Vol. 2 first came out. It didn’t really make sense that Ego would go kidnap some random person that just happened to have powers that he could benefit from. We know he’d fathered numerous children, so it makes sense that if one just happened to have a useful ability he’d keep her around. Also when Ego was showing Peter some of the various females he’d mated with one of them was of the same species as Mantis.

This was the best Marvel projects that takes place around Christmas (along with Hawkeye series)!! Perfect way to end Phase 4!! It was a great spotlight for Drax and Mantis! Rocket finally got Bucky’s arm!! Peter and Mantis being siblings was surprising (hoping both of them don’t get killed off in their final appearance)!!
Even after that, on the Planet Titan. Footloose is mentioned about the dance battle by Spider-Man and the joke about it. Quill asks Spider Man "Is it still the best movie ever?' and Peter Parker replies "it never was".
The coolest part to me is that band is James Gunn's own band and some of the songs are their own so there was no one for him to pay. Also, all Gunn had to do was ask Kevin Bacon if he wanted to be in a holiday special where he would sing and Kevin was in before even seeing the script.
One special thing this connected for me was the dash ornaments Yondu collected. In the first guardians movie, he was looking at a bauble while talking to the merchant on Xandar. That Christmas gift was Yondu's first ornament! I also think it is why, at the end of the first Guardians movie, Yondu still smiles when he opens the orb. While he doesn't have the power stone, he still likes the troll doll, and likely added it to his dash collection.

I didn’t care all that much for Mantis up till now since she rarely participated in the action and didn’t show much personality and this special fixed all of that.
The Mantis sister situation comes from Plot Technicalities that are the consequence of Guardians Vol 2. Mantis says that Ego created her. So she is technically his Half-Sister.
I'm pretty sure Mantis was always intended to be Peter's sister since it showed Ego getting with a female of Mantis' species in Guardians 2. It was also mentioned in a deleted scene from the second movie, although deleted scenes aren't necessarily canon.
@johnkult1039 both the comics and movies are canon. They're just separate realities in the multiverse with their own separate lore, but both are canon in their own realities. Marvel comics even confirmed that the MCU exists within their comics multiverse just like the Ultimate universe does.
I'm happy that my favorite Guardian Drax also gets his spotlight as the main character in this story as well and kidnapping Kevin Bacon as a gift to Star-Lord was Drax's idea!!!

Its not that. Before that Mantis says that she was created by Ego. Her species, and character in the comics is much different. She can see more than emotions, she gets premonitions about future events in alternate timelines. It might get added to her abilities since the MCU timeline went from a single one, to a multiverse of possibilities. Her abilities might be upgraded in vol 3 of Guardians.

BEST HOLIDAY SPECIAL EVER!!! The sight of Rocket getting Bucky’s arm and tearing up was both heartwarming and hilarious. And I loved that we found out Peter and Mantis are siblings! And don’t forget about THE LEGENDARY KEVIN BACON!
James Gunn just tweeted today that they rotoscoped the animated scenes like old Ralph Bakshi movies, so Michael Rooker was on set in costume for those scenes.

Although Kevin Bacon's character never fought (or even met Jason) Rusty Schwimmer the woman who Mantis steals from appears in Jason Goes to Hell and did fight Jason.

In the first movie, when Peter was trying to seduce Gamora, he tried to get her to dance by describing Kevin Bacon as a hero who saved a town through dancing, and mentioned him by name. Gamora later said they were heroes "Just like Kevin Bacon".
If you look closely you can see the animation style is very similar to the 70s era animation which was when most iconic Christmas specials came out. And what Peter would have grew up on before his kidnapping.
Been waiting for this! It was such a good special. I'm so happy that Mantis finally got the spotlight and got to show how much more skilled she is other than using her specific power... and how much more of a role she's going to play in future GOTG movies

I love that this special gave us a chance to see Mantis growing beyond Ego’s control. Her have a bit of an anger issue really makes her stand out more

The biggest laugh I got out of this was Nebula dancing.
For me it was Peter’s slow reaction of horror as he began to figure out what his “gift” was. I couldn’t breath for a solid minute

Loved all the Mantis! Pom did a fabulous and hilarious job. Her angry yells were amazing and got me to laugh each time. 😂
