They seem to move slow, but when you realize the scale, they're actually moving very fast. Sixty to eighty mile per hour punches and stuff. They're just so HUGE each move takes longer to go through it's full range.
I've already seen this movie probably 10 times and I always love it. It's a great ride and I personally chose to take Rayleigh and Mako's relationship as something platonic. IIRC they shot a scene where they kiss out of the survival pods but they went with the scene where they don't kiss because they felt it was better to let people interpret it however they wanted it and that forcing a romantic relationship between them didn't add anything to the movie.
Agree. The scene where Mako sees Rayleigh without a shirt I have always taken as her realizing after her comment about his fighting the difficulty and sacrifice he has gone through with the visible scars. I never took it as she was hot for him or shy at seeing him shirtless more ashamed on how she treated him moments earlier.
I remember seeing this in the cinema...and it was the movie of the year for me. I was blown away then and I still think it is one of my fave action movies ever. I am rarely disapponted when it comes to Guilliermo Del Toro.
Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham knocked it out of the park with this movie. Beacham was also the co-writer for Dog Days of Summer and Clash of the Titans, along with being the creative mind behind the steampunk fantasy series Carnival Row on Prime Video.
For a 2013 film it still amazes how much the visual effects, sound, and overall look still holds up; like it doesn't overstay it's welcome; sure the neon lighting might be a bit annoying but to me how the lighting works in this film gives off this unique charm that the sequel doesn't have. That goes double for the kaiju look and how good the Jaegers look they are all practical and not too campy or too cartoonish And I'm still geeking out over the fact that Del Toro was able to ask Valve if it was okay to use GLaDOS from Portal to voice Gipsy Danger's A.I. system. So much heart and love was definitely put into this movie.
I knew I heard that voice somewhere 😧! I just didn't know where 🥲. It doesn't help that I never really played portal except the free demo on Xbox360 ages ago 😅.
Fun fact: you would think a movie like this would be full cgi, but they used a surprisingly large amount of practical effects along with the cgi, hence why it looks so amazing.
Once Dr Newton drifted and connected to the Kaiju brain, the Kaiju Precursors knew exactly what would work to take out the Jaegers, that's why the Kaijus did such an efficient job of the 3 Jaegers.
52:20 It sounds like GLADOS because it is. They got the same voice actor. 53:10 It’s always a love story? Actually in this movie they never actually kissed! Found that a refreshing choice.
A wise man once said: "We've got a freaking Kaiju up in this sh*t!" 😱 One of my favourite movies period. Hit me just in the right age when it came. It started a new era of modern action movies for me, along with the First Iron man. The music by Ramin Djawadi (from both movies) is still in my playlist. And I still re-watch both of them once in a while.
The thing is. It is a love story tbh. For humanity itself. For the place each and every single person has in society no matter how eccentric or weird. As for Mako and Raleigh. Yeah, it’s a love story. And the best part of Pacific Rim and the way Toro wrote it, is there is no way to deny that theirs is a love story. But no one can say it was romantic. You can interpret it as such. But the way their relationship builds and plays out, it doesn’t have to be. And that in itself is another absolutely beautiful aspect of this film.
As a lifelong fan of Godzilla, Kong, and so many others this was an absolute love letter to kaiju fans everywhere and no one is better to deliver it than Del Toro. I honestly would like to see you watch more kaiju movies like Cloverfield, Kong Skull Island, and even some Godzilla movies
One of my favorite movies :D I love the attention to detail on how the mech's move. Like Gipsy Danger is a big mass of moving parts, it really comes across like a massive hulking machine the way Del Toro directed it
The scene where Gipsy first launches brought tears to my eyes when I saw it in theaters for the first time. Prior to the Monsterverse, this was the big giant monster vs. giant robot movie I have always wanted to see on the big screen! The original will always be a top favorite. The sequel and Netflix anime series, not so much.
Great reaction, guys! You guys are really fun to watch reactions to. Keep up the great work! One of the biggest things I liked about how this movie turned out is that in the end, it is not romantic love. But they do love each other beyond what normal people can comprehend due to them drifting with each other. It's the bonds of closeness brotherhood (brother/sisterhood), soulmates, companionship, kindred spirits, brother/sister at arms, everything that creates it. That's why they did not kiss at the end. It would be inappropriate.
The darkness and raining also helps with the CGI and effects, to help blend them in and cover up things that may seem off under harsh lighting making things look more realistic, kind of like that first reveal of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park.
With Pentecost talking about his final fight solo, his partner was knocked out by the radiation while they fought Onibaba. He eventually brought Mako to meet her and she was in tears when Mako said she saved her life.
Man, PacRim was such a great movie. I got to see it in theaters when it came out with my family. My son (who was...jeeze, like 8) stared transfixed at the screen the entire movie. Did NOT feel as long as it was.
There is no situation that this movie's soundtrack can't make more awesome. One detail from the novelization/the original script that never made it into the movie proper is that Mako's father was a swordsmith. So her adding the sword to Gipsy and killing Otachi with it is her finally getting vengeance
7:37 Props to Raleigh for actually managing to stay alive. For one thing, this is in Alaska and probably winter, so he was out there for hours, piloting Gipsy by himself, until around midday. Couple that with the damage Gipsy received, and Raleigh feeling Yancy's death in his own brain, it's a god-given blessing he's still alive, and even more so that it's not rendered him mad. 8:58 After destroying a pair of smaller Jaeger's too. Also her name is Mutavore. 9:11 And they just said the Jaeger program was shut down. The Sydney Shatterdome was able to get Striker Eureka, the only Mk V in service, up and the Hansens were able to curbstomp her. Also those punches are going right at Mutavore's eyes, which are under her mouth and leaving her blind. 9:25 Thanks Nikki 44:13 Bear witness mortals. Tremble before Slattern, Guardian of the Breach.
Love that you identified the GladOs voice from portal. One of the people in the production of this movie in fact loved that voice so they hired her for the gypsy danger computer voice.
What makes Pacific Rim so great is it put us right in the center of the Kaiju war. It expected us to trust the story, and understand very quickly what is going on in the world
This was such a surprise. I watched for Charlie Hunam. Fell in love with idris. Del toro always brings the heat with good critters and creepy visuals. This is the movie where idris made me believe he could carry a film.
Holy shit, this is one the best movies ever made! You can really feel the weight behind every attack, such a good way to start my day! Thanks Nikki and Steven, you two are the best!! 😁
There's some absolutely fantastic references and interpersonal beats taken from Evangelion for this movie, especially mecha-versus-monsters and Mako being an expy for the character Rei. If you guys ever try watching anime, watch that one. It's completely bonkers, in a wonderful eldritch-madness-mecha-combat way.
This was the closest I've seen to a live action mecha type anime. I love this movie. Young Mako was, as with the young Korean girl who played the daughter in Train to Busan, very effective in her part.
In the beginning you see the effects operating and drifting with a Jaegar as a single pilot had, bloodshot eyes, bleeding nose, obvious trauma etc Pentecost was one of the only successful pilots to operate a Jaegar by himself, that is what he is suffering from, the persisting effects of that.
He unironically says iron man when they’re suiting up but I believe the people who designed and built the practical suits for the Iron Man movies did these suits as well. And yes, that was GlaDOS’ voice actress.
11:25 Burn Gorman, He was Murty from The Expanse season 4. He's also in the Man in the High Castle. You check out one of his other series Turn: Washington's Spies.
Watching your reaction really makes me want to go and watch it again. It's been a long time. The one dude that played Murtry in the Expanse was pretty funny to see in that you thought he was a bad guy at the start of this. One fun thing about the design of the Jagers and Kaiju is that they were meant to look like people coulld fit inside them, in honor of the old kaiju shows.
Acid for cherno alpha, extra claw for crimmson tyohoon and EMP for the electric powered and faster jaeger. The drif with the kaiju its a 2 ways link , so they instanly knew how to counter the jaeger.Gipsy danger got destroyed 5 years ago , thats why he got so easy time vs 2 kaijus designed for those 3 jaegers
I recommend reading the novelization as well. It's not as much of a fun ride but it adds a bunch of context. For example, turns out Mako's family were traditional Japanese swordmakers. When Mako oversaw Gypsy Danger's refit, and gave it the new chainswords, she was continuing a family tradition.
This is just a perfect action fight movie. It doesn't waste any of its or your time. It doesn't try to be anything it isn't. It also manages to convey extremely believable sense of scale extremely quickly and well. Plus it's just dealing with some really awesome ideas.
1, This film is so gloriously silly and self-aware you can't help but like it. 2, The child actor is called Mana Ashida, and apparently everyone spoiled her rotten including the director, but she couldn't pronounce Del Toro correctly and it embarrassed her, so Guillermo de Toro gave her permission to call in "Totoro-san" instead, and that’s adorable.
I saw this in the theater. It was just something to bide time for a few hours. I had low expectations but it was so good. I loved the Voltron/Godzilla vibes. It's become kind of a cult classic I think.
Love this movie. Fun fact: the part where Charlie Hunnam grabs Idris Elba by the arm and Idris is like "don't you ever touch me again" (26:24) was 100% improvised. XD
I watched this movie in 3D in the theater and its was awesome!!!! still one of my favorites movies and my top kaiju movies ! I just love it! Guillermo del Toro did a fantastic work with this! I love you reacted to this!! 😍
I love this film an unreasonable amount. It's just so good. It does exactly what you want it to do. Big robots punching big monsters, but with heart. :D
I would imagine Tony Stark working here at the Shatterdome, spearheading everything, micromanaging, the works!!! Basically, a Hong Kong branch of his Industries!!!!😉
Absolutely loved the look Steven gave Nikki when she pronounced, "It's a boy!" And we both were thinking, how the hell can you tell if this baby kaiju is a boy or a girl? But while I would be dumb enough to say that out loud, Steve just let it go unsaid - beautiful, brother!
I watched this so many times in theaters. I really wish they waited to let Guillermo do the 2nd one, it wasn't horrible, but wasn't worth watching more then once. the show Pacific Rim: The Black was pretty good to me, just 2 seasons, wish it could have had one more season though, it didn't feel complete and I wanted more lore dumps, and you learn more about some Kaiju Cults, and takes place some time after the 2nd film. but as a lifelong fan of both Kaijus and Mobile Suits, PR has a special place in my heart.
Out of all the movies I’ve seen in my life, watching this in theaters was a experience like no other. Watching it again at home was great, but that theater was experience
I'm glad you liked this movie, it's my personal favourite movie of all time simply because it connects with the kid In me in a way that no other movie I've ever watched has, I wish I could watch this movie for the first time all over again
The girl playing little Mako is Japanese and had trouble saying director Guillermo del Toro's name, so he allowed her to call him Totoro-san, like from the Ghibli movie.
One of the best things about this movie is how the action is shot. Most of it is either ground level views to make them seem bigger or helicopter shots with little quick zooms and it really plays into making you feel like your there watching them.
The sequel isn't bad production quality or anything. Its the same if not better. Its just that it was geared more towards children and teenagers that time around. It's really such a tragedy because this was a cool franchise up to this point.
I LOVE this movie, it's so comic book-like, so over the top and visually stunning, just such a guilty pleasure treat to watch easy movie night, fun times! Saw it in cinemas and seen it 10s of times, so much fun!
35:40 -well, before Jagers, the only way they could stop a Kaiju is with a nuke. Which REALLY destroys the city! This is rebuildable and non-radioactive solution.
This is one of my benchmark movies that I routinely ask people if they have seen once a movie conversation erupts. We saw it in IMAX 3D and were blown away. Could not recommend it enough and wish that Guillermo del Toro could have told his bigger story if more people had seen this in the theater. He explained that this movie was the end of the war and that subsequent movies would deal with the beginning or the earlier years of the war itself. Instead, we got Pacific Rim: Uprising which was good in that it was more of the same universe, but was definitely missing del Toro's guidance. Great reaction!
Such a fun movie. I went in expecting Giant Stompy Robots vs. Kaiju and was totally satisfied! My husband spent the ride home complaining about everything they got wrong about the physics. XD

They seem to move slow, but when you realize the scale, they're actually moving very fast. Sixty to eighty mile per hour punches and stuff. They're just so HUGE each move takes longer to go through it's full range.
The more time that passes the more I appreciate this movie.
That's really cool
Hell yeah!! Guillermo del Toro never fails!! Hope you can see the rest of his filmography!
That goes double for the kaiju look and how good the Jaegers look they are all practical and not too campy or too cartoonish
And I'm still geeking out over the fact that Del Toro was able to ask Valve if it was okay to use GLaDOS from Portal to voice Gipsy Danger's A.I. system. So much heart and love was definitely put into this movie.
I knew I heard that voice somewhere 😧! I just didn't know where 🥲. It doesn't help that I never really played portal except the free demo on Xbox360 ages ago 😅.
I love how this movie became a cult classic. It had every possibility to fail, but it just didnt. It's just a damn good movie. Simple as that.
This movie is criminally underrated. One of my all-time faves.
Fun fact: you would think a movie like this would be full cgi, but they used a surprisingly large amount of practical effects along with the cgi, hence why it looks so amazing.
LOT of models as well which they would destroy and then layer in CG on top of. It was brilliantly shot by an extremely talented team.
Once Dr Newton drifted and connected to the Kaiju brain, the Kaiju Precursors knew exactly what would work to take out the Jaegers, that's why the Kaijus did such an efficient job of the 3 Jaegers.
Hilarious, they think they are watching a movie about WWII or something, and they get Kaiju fights and neural drifting. This is gonna be great.
Okay, now I want a WWII-era Kaiju movie
@@alexkramerblogs Write that down! WRITE THAT DOWN!!!!
@@alexkramerblogs eh it would just lead to us nuking it
52:20 It sounds like GLADOS because it is. They got the same voice actor.
53:10 It’s always a love story? Actually in this movie they never actually kissed! Found that a refreshing choice.
This is one of those "don't think about it, just enjoy it" movies.
A wise man once said: "We've got a freaking Kaiju up in this sh*t!" 😱
One of my favourite movies period.
^^^
"This movie is a whole lot of fun." - That's the best way to describe it. It's the perfect popcorn flick.
This movie dominated my every thought for years. It just hit me in a special way.
One of my favorite movies :D
I love the attention to detail on how the mech's move.
It would be inappropriate.
yes that was one of my favorite things lol. you can see the attraction without needing an 'we made it!' makeout fade to black sequence.
The darkness and raining also helps with the CGI and effects, to help blend them in and cover up things that may seem off under harsh lighting making things look more realistic, kind of like that first reveal of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park.
Was stoked to see you two had done this one, and glad you both enjoyed it. This has been one of my favorites for as long as it’s existed.
Saw this in IMAX when it first came out and it was one of the best movie experiences of my life.
I remember watching this when it first came out, I had zero idea what I was going to and was blown away completely.
If neither of you have watched sons of anarchy I strongly recommend watching it, it is such a good show!!
I agree with you. I would looooooove to see them react to SOA. One of my favourite shows.
@@danski2260 I watched until the beginning of season 6 and I just lost interest tbh 😅
@@DanielFernandez-gv6iy it did stray from the path a bit but I feel it really finished strong
@@danski2260 that’s good to know. I’ll probably finish it haha, I just felt like it was getting a bit repetitive
@@danski2260
Kurt Sutter did say that pretty much every major story beat was inspired by/borrowed from Hamlet.
When we saw this in the theater, after the pre-title sequence, I turned to my girlfriend and said: "This is already the greatest movie ever made."
I knew that Mako’s memory would break Nikki’s heart; that child actress did a HELL of a job.
i got to see this movie in theaters, and i yelled about how great it was the whole way home. you could feel every hit. i absolutely love it.
There is no situation that this movie's soundtrack can't make more awesome.
One detail from the novelization/the original script that never made it into the movie proper is that Mako's father was a swordsmith. So her adding the sword to Gipsy and killing Otachi with it is her finally getting vengeance
This is still to this day one of my favorite movies. I could watch it at any point and enjoy it.
9:25 Thanks Nikki
44:13 Bear witness mortals.
It expected us to trust the story, and understand very quickly what is going on in the world
I love that you recognized GladOS. It is the same voice actor, and a cameo of GladOS :)
I legit totally forgot about the pregnant kaiju, how could they know she was expecting it was, unexpected 😂😂😂 (I’ll see myself out 🤣🤣🤣)
This was such a surprise.
Totally.
"Today, we are cancelling the apocalypse!" God I love this movie.
He unironically says iron man when they’re suiting up but I believe the people who designed and built the practical suits for the Iron Man movies did these suits as well.
And yes, that was GlaDOS’ voice actress.
A highly underrated and unappreciated movie, especially considering the crap we have endured for the past few years.
Whatever you do, don’t watch the sequel. It’s horrible 😂😂😂
I think they would enjoy it. I did. 🤷♂️
No, let them watch it. I wanna see they're take on it lol
They made it through Birdemic. They could probably hack the sequel to this. 🤣
It's a great movie if you don't care about plot, writing or pacing.
Yep. Was absolute trash.
11:25 Burn Gorman, He was Murty from The Expanse season 4. He's also in the Man in the High Castle. You check out one of his other series Turn: Washington's Spies.
This is one of three movies I've seen where the theater experience is required to truly experience it.
23:44 Hellboy, he is on Sons of Anarchy too, one of the bad guy vampires in Blade 2, the bad guy in Drive.
42:18
"Oh god, its a boy". Word Nikki, Word😭😭🤣🤣😂😭😭
This is still one of my favourite movies of all time
I love this film an unreasonable amount.
Because when it came out it was all blue.
@@SlashmanSG 🤣True, true, but Na'vi and smurfs have blue babies, which aren't always boy babies. (Although with smurfs, it's almost always a boy...)
52:50 That's because it is! Guillermo del Toro specifically hired GlaDOS' voice actress as the computer voice because he's a Big Nerd(tm).
Right? This as close as I've ever seen to a 'real' Gundam... and we get Gundams fighting Kaiju? Sign me the fuck up.
Extremely underrated film. Would have loved to have seen this at the theater in DBOX seats.
One of the best things about this movie is how the action is shot. Most of it is either ground level views to make them seem bigger or helicopter shots with little quick zooms and it really plays into making you feel like your there watching them.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. So excited for the reaction.
Giant robot fight against monsters?
This satisfies the inner child in all of us.
Pacific Rim is one of the most underrated movies ever in my opinion. Shame they screwed up the sequel a little bit.
I can see you two as Jaeger pilots.
Such a fun movie. I went in expecting Giant Stompy Robots vs. Kaiju and was totally satisfied! My husband spent the ride home complaining about everything they got wrong about the physics. XD
It’s not a Guillermo del Toro movie without Ron Perlman
Guillermo del Toro, the same man that made the two first movies of Hellboy and Blade II is the one responsible for this masterpiece
I haven’t pressed play but I just want to say that I know Mako’s backstory is going to destroy Nikki💔 SUCH a fantastic and well done movie. Love everything about it to this day.
Oh and btw. Just pressed play ahha Going into it blind without knowing anything about it?? BEST thing u guys could’ve done.🙌🏼❤️
Happy Holidays, thanks for all the amazing content.
