Not all the assets in this reenactment are 100% historically correct. MiG-21s in reality were PFL models while here they are represented by a more advanced bis variant. A proper Vietnam map is not yet available so another one was used and you might see some snow covered mountains in the background. These are not mistakes and there's no need to comment on them. Thank you for your understanding!

Thanks for the feedback! Dogfights were one of my main inspirations for this content. It does take time to produce the videos and put them out at a regular pace. I wish time went a bit slower 😁
Another great video, and it's made that much more exciting by covering the mighty F-4 and MiG-21! Can't wait to see what you have planned for the Heatblur F-4E.
Those early Sparrows and sidewinders missiles were pretty unreliable back then, I'm surprised that the US military relied on them so much that they procured the F4 Phantom with out an internal 20mm cannon.
The cannon couldn't be used at supersonic speed. The USAF and Navy were still pretty much on the Korean war experience in which high speed was the key to success. They believed that dogfighting was a thing of the past, that's why they relied on missiles that were seen as miracle weaponry.
Contrary to popular belief the cannon didn’t have too many kills even after it’s integration into later variants. The missiles still came out on top despite their shortcomings.
If you notice, 99% of all turning and burning dog fighting done from Vietnam all the way up to today is done in the sub sonic speed range. Missiles are a whole lot more reliable today, but every fighter, be it the F22, F35, F15X, Euro/French, Russian all have internal guns. They're there when $h!t comes to shove and you need a gun.@@julosx
Ok but even as unreliable as those missiles were, they still got you faster shot from longer range and safer position. Vietnamese avoided dogfights so even if you had gun they would not stay for demonstration.
@@showtime112 Maybe occupied a Sparrow point. I saw a video the pods weren't stable so were unreliable. The E version with the canon is reliable. Greece still operates Pantom F-4 E. The first 14 came on April of 1974.
Another great story told by ST112. The gun question seems to be raising it's head again. The J-20 has no gun. The 25MM on the F-35 is having issues and some question that the F-35 will ever be in a situation to use it. It does not fight like a 4th gen aircraft at all and yet gets 20-1 victories at Red Flag with the USAF A model and 25-0 with the B model with the Marines.
Another interesting fact the PF series MiG-21 models didn't have internal gun either, a gunpod was incorporated to the PFM, but that meant they couldn't carry external fuel tank

Great video Showtime112, the rule of engagement in the air war over North Vietnam was the most stupid rule in history of air combat the North Vietnam aircraft have to displayed hostile acts to be brought into battle, if spotted by American aircraft first not to be engage by the Americans, the North Vietnamese Pilots prefer hit and run attack which this rule of engagement gave them the advantage, there more North Vietnamese aces worse for the F4 pilots the lack of or no 20mm cannons on the early Phantoms this would have being a game changer in the air war over North Vietnam, the air to air missiles performance was poor with less than 10% success rate. Funny after Rolling Thunder campaign 1965 -1968, US Army, Marines, Airforce and Navy Gunships pilots 1969-71 begun to have similar rules not to engage North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong Soldiers and guerrillas fighters in South Vietnam after spotting them in the open without permission form the South Vietnamese army or they display hostile acts gave them the advantage to step up batteries of Mortars and Recoiless Rifles with enemy Infantry regiments to attack Fire bases.
