I got the sense from this video that Webb pushed too hard in workouts (and sometimes way over the top with that 1:48.9 last 800m). This type of bravado is played out in many, many schools. Probably the single best reason American milers languish in the international scene to this day - tone down the ego and train intelligently.
In what world do American milers languish in the international scene coming off American gold in the 1500 at Rio? I'll admit the 9th rep in the workout was probably a little silly but if the coach wanted him to be at 1:55 then it seems justified. Webb just ran it too fast.
@@thesoccertrotter1 david rudisha doesnt have the best training out there tho. He has the best buid (not to take away from his greatness) but man has a stride that he perfected which is something not a lot of people focus on at all and it matched his build perfectly. A super long stride that allows him to go through 400m in 49 seconds without much effort while other that go out in 49-50 mostly break down in the last 200m. Hard training is good sometimes as long as it is followed by proper recovery
While there could be an argument to be made that Michigan did affect him long term, it's honestly hard to relegate some of his unbelievably impressive post-Michigan seasons as mere flashes of brilliance. Basically I'm saying he proved himself far too often after his stint at Michigan for college to have destroyed him. Not that I have any of the answers, but I feel like his career's biggest hurdles in no particular order included: 1. His tactics 2. His training (at times) 3. Himself
The talent and potential of Alan Webb......unparalleled
i agree , that work out must have been insane

David Rudisha actually runs his workouts quite mild
