  • So you've got a red dot optic on your handgun, and some back up iron sights, do they work together? Should I slave the dot to the sights? What about co-witness this or that? Well this topic comes up a lot and we've got you covered. In this video we talk about what the dot does, and what the iron sights do and how you should be using the dot when shooting. Hopefully this answers a lot of the questions out there, but if not, please leave a comment so we can help out. Or better yet send a question to theqa@gunsandtactics.com

By far the best video on this subject I've seen. I've had several friends ask me questions about adding a RDS and Co-witnessing suppressor height sights to their pistols. I've done it to several of my pistols. I will definitely show them this very informative video before letting them shoot mine. I especially like how you correctly show the front sight slightly higher than the rear sight when shooting with the red dot in the center of the glass. That is something many other videos fail to show correctly and it adds to the confusion for new red dot shooters.

This is great! Wish I had found this hundreds of dollars ago LOL! I have been "trial and erroring" it and have gotten to the point where my "trend" is decent with my red dots. I'm going to mess with this at the range though because I still doubt myself since I'm a new shooter. It's nice having this explained though because I'll have more confidence figuring out who sucks more, me or the red dot LOL! I was getting frustrated though because I'm not too bad with iron sights alone on guns without red dots. Reading the comments and your replies was almost as helpful as the videos itself. Thanks again!

Out of all the content creators in this field, Dave’s videos have been the most helpful to me. Whether I’m shopping parts, learning how to torque a mount, or finding the best practices for using an optic, Dave’s content is trustworthy. Concise and mindful of time, yet still covers basics and fundamentals, which is crucial for the less experienced amongst us. Dude has a real talent for instruction and his editing/video team is just as excellent. I usually go to Sage Dynamics for my handgun RDS vids but this came up in my recommendations and I'm glad it did because it answered a few questions I had. Normally my handguns have a much taller RDS and much shorter sights, but I just set up a Canik MC9 with a Holosun EPS Carry (taller sights, shorter RDS) and boy oh boy I was confused because I've never been able to see the irons through the window before. I like that I can still USE the irons through the window if the dot fails, but that white dot on the front sight is gonna be a train-it-out thing. Might just cover it with black tape.

That's why those that want full co-witness have suppressor height sights. It changes now since the rds get slimmer and/or are directly mounted without plates. The reasoning behind it is they'd have the same presentation for both each time and are able to ignore the iron sights via their target focus. I see it only as preference what our eyes can deal with. If it works all one has to do is refocus on the front sight but no need to move around to line the sights up.

Thanks, very informative. I finally transitioned to a RDS on my handgun about a year ago. I zeroed my optic without using the irons like many say you should. I always wondered why people say not to slave the dot to the irons. After zeroing if I used my irons the dot would naturally fall to the top the the irons. I thought maybe I did something wrong. It worked flawlessly, but it was never properly explained to me. The sight picture with the front sight slightly raised is exactly what I see when shooting normally (dot in center of glass). Now I know without a doubt I didn’t mess something up.

I bought a Glock 30 and a Glock 22 and never cared for the cheap sights, the slide release, or the overall feel. Others do like them and I say if it works for you that’s a good thing. As a semi-professional shooter I buy what works best for me 💯

Great information especially after I Just got me fist red dot (not a expensive one) cause I Just wanna try this red dot thing and sure enought was wrong about this co witnessing concept which had me all confused. I put in a red láser bullet and was wondering why nothing aligned for me but now I understand it way better now and Know that red dot should be aligned for a sudden distance and my gun sight for a different ones.

Wow! Just, wow! Exactly what i have been looking for all this time to clarify not to co-witness when my zero on the red dot “coincides” with the dot planted on the iron sights when viewed from the irons. But when i’m using the dot, it is centered on the glass - with the front sight raised! Thanks!!!

Thank you, I just found the video and it makes perfect sense, especially after getting suppressor height sights and sight pusher. I'll probably go back and put my original sights back on. I need to look at your library, I'm curious about the use of a laser as a sighting tool as well. You got your self another subscriber.

very helpful video. most of my training and practice is with .357 revolver(yup, i'm old) i am now a hobby shooter that has been really enjoying integrating old training with a co witness tall sight with sig romeo 1. co witness works for me and where i'm at. i am astounded by the battery life compared to older stuff. i am gradually gaining trust in the red dot. the red dot has for sure helped with my weakening eyesight. my big question is quickly clearing mud or snow, etc from an optic

Thanx for the info man!!! I am new to the whole red&green dot world.Talk about confusing to say the least. The guy that works at my local gun store goes by slaving the red or green dot to the iron sights, and others like you say no.I see more no then yes. This video explained it very well why not to.I appreciate it.

“Co-witnessing” is only being able to see your irons in the window of the optic in case the optic fails. People have preferences for ‘lower 1/3rd’ or ‘full co-witness’ with the irons in the middle of the optic. Lower 1/3rd is typically preferred because there’s less going on in the small handgun rds lense.
The red dot is a separate sighting system from the irons completely and should be sighted-in /used as such. You don’t want them slaved to your irons as there’s different distances for each system.
Very well stated sir there’s a lot of BS on the internet and just as many new shooters that need the right info. Also, Aaron Cowan has a few excellent videos of this exact topic and how to set them up for each.

Took the words right out of my mouth Si Vis, “co-witnessing” is solely for the purpose of being able to view both sight systems within the field of view, regardless of the preferred height of the irons (usually lower 1/3rd). The irons are only meant to be backup sights in case of a downed optic situation, like G&T was saying optics can go down with moisture, blooming, lighting, battery issues, and endless other reasons. It’s good to have low tech piece of mind as backup, but I agree slaving rds optics to irons is not a good idea.
