Jess, no matter how careful you are, you can still get into accidents because of those around you like reckless drivers who cut and suddenly stop in front of you as well as jaywalkers suddenly crossing the streets. Keep a distance with vehicles in front of you particularly trucks, bus, rusty jeeps (no insurance). Distance from vehicle in front of you should be far enough for you to brake and slow down (around 6 to 10 seconds time to come to a halt) even when they stop abruptly. Practice going up steep roads with 45-degree inclines or even more. You might find yourself "hanging" on a bridge going up because of traffic and you have to inch yourself going up with another car behind you also on the steep road. This is where you practice with the hand brakes and clutch and brake coordination. Libis area road going to Katipunan to Ateneo is a good practice site and also going up Baguio and Antipolo (from Marcos Highway in Marikina) and Quiapo bridge. Start building your mental map of Metro Manila roads and nearby provinces by going out exploring early on a Sunday morning because there are less vehicles and traffic to deal with. Sometimes getting lost is a good way to learn the ins and outs of the place. Familiarity of secondary and tertiary roads come in handy when there is traffic in Metro Manila and you need to get to a place asap. Try going out in stormy weather, with kuya as alalay is good, to experience going through flooded streets and heavy rains. Here you get to practice with wet brakes after going through floods without your engines dying on you. Be familiar with basic maintenance. Get tips from kuya driver especially with air in tires, changing tires, checking engine oil and water in radiator, and avoiding battery discharges. Overtaking a convoy of trucks, buses and autos on provincial highways is a challenge. Otherwise, you're going to get stuck at a slow pace with them when you need to go faster going to a place. Signaling of vehicles going the opposite way and timing is critical here, inserting yourself at times back in the convoy and trying to get out of it again. These are situations I had to deal with driving in Metro Manila and Luzon in the past. Keep your cool and continue smiling despite everything going wrong. Don't get harassed by motorist honking behind you because you move slower than them. Let them overtake you. Hand signal them if necessary to overtake you. Be patient. We don't say "Sorry" but a lot of times say "Pasiyensiya na (Be patient with me. I'll do better)" and just smile as always. When you "graduate" from Philippine roads, a lot of Filipinos would say you can drive anywhere around the world with complete confidence because you survived and thrived driving these roads. Driving in Manila engages all your senses and emotions. I havrn't driven in the Philippines for 38 years, but I used to drive there before we immigrated to the U.S. If you're familiar driving in the Philippines, it's hard to drive here because the rules are different (there are rules). Stopovers (rest areas in the U.S.) are mostly vending machines. You'll get the the hang of it when you drive always there. Like Kuya said, konting practice pa.

Coming to the Philippines from LA, which is notoriously bad for traffic, I was shell shocked for the first three days being in the car in PI. I'm generally even keel when driving, don't get too angry, don't try and cut people off or aggressive driving but holy crap that goes out the window out of sheer necessity. SO I can totally understand driving there for the first time to be an experience.
A piece of advice: Be extra careful of motorcycles. Sometimes they just come out of nowhere and just insert anywhere and if you hit them, even if it is their fault, you still have to pay their hospital bills.

Have you tried baked and chopped talong (or cooked on a hot plate over gas stove (removed the skin after cooking it), chopped fresh tomatoes, chopped fresh onions, chopped garlic, chopped chilli (labuyo) salt and pepper with lots of calamansi juice and toyo ( or delmonte vinegar, soy sauce and sugar(splenda) to taste)? This is great with fried and barbecued fish and meats. It's like kimchi to koreans. We normally eat this to counter or balance the oiliness of the meat specially. Atchara, is much more expensive and complicated to cook, but we also eat it with fried/barbecued fish and meat. Also, eating this with any food will make the eating experience more filipino. Other provinces use their own vinegar lika sinamak of ilocona and tuba vinegar in southern luzon provinces. I prefer sweeter and spicier version of coconut vinegar. Btw, tuba vinegar is great if you have persistent dry cough. But, don't over use because it will make your body acidic. You can also use fresh cucumber instead of talong.

“Stopovers” in USA are “meh”. Mainly gas stations and fast food chain places like McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, Denny’s. Sometimes, there is something like a roadside restaurant which are OK but I wouldn’t choose to go there on a regular basis. On Hwy 5 in California, there is ONE stop over destination I would recommend (Harris Ranch). They sell steaks (to take home and cook), hotel, restaurants (can get Prime Rib, ribeye, NY steak, etc). In between, they have “rest stops” where you mainly get out to stretch you legs, go to the bathroom and take a nap. Some have vending machines. But it’s mostly junk food and stuff loaded with preservatives. They are nothing like the rest stops in Korea (that I have seen in Kdramas and Korean TV shows). Those I would actually want to go to as a destination. Clean bathrooms and good food.
believe me when I say that once you get the hang of driving in Manila, you will be a well rounded driver anywhere in the world. i know because it happened to me. expect not all drivers to follow traffic rules and regulations - you will see a lot of them. anticipate driver’s movement and motive in infront of you, whether while following a car, or a car facing you. your patience will be tested believe me. once you do get the hang of driving in Manila, the next problem is overconfidence, so always stay humble, patient and chill. safe driving Jessica, may you become a well rounded solo driver anywhere you go…

There should be an articulable reasonable explanation to conduct a traffic stop for drunk test. In the US, drivers can file charges of violation of their rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. And, this is a jurisprudence applicable in the Philippines. The constitutional rights and traffic stop laws in S Korea might be different. In my personal opinion, there are many drunks there like in japan.
Wow, drivers there are like the drivers in Queens (New York). While the ones in Long Island (also New York) are the ones that rush and don't use signals as often, they have a different law for signals.

if you get a hang on driving into the streets here in Manila you will be a better driver in other countries. I mean, with all the vehicles like tricycles, motorcycles, bikes, ebikes and pedestrians if you can evade all those things you will be a better driver. My advise, just bring a lot of patience because a lot of drivers will cut to your lane when they see a bit of space and be a defensive driver meaning looking at all the mirrors (sides and rear view) while driving if needed and when you see the tail lights in front of you light up just gradually apply on the brakes to maintain distance and will have ample time to avoid any traffic collision. maybe this is too much but it is for the safe travels when driving. Drive safe!

When turning left or right you cant rely in just your side mirrors because they still have blind spots. You have to do whats called a shoulder check as well. Lalo na sa pinas kasi biglang sumusulpot mga motor, trykes and pati tao.
when you lane change, you look at your side and rearview mirrors, and look over the shoulder, making sure its clear and then you complete the lane change, i think that helps, because its kinda hard to judge the distance if you only rely on your sideview mirror. but yeah good drive
KUYA IS KOOL ! If you can drive in the PHILIPPINE, you can drive anywhere in the world. Every driver in the PHILIPPINES communicate with horn and it seems all of them reading their minds. The good thing driving in the PHILIPPINES, there are no road rage. If they want to get in, either you let him or not but no fighting and shouting. @ 8:26 perhaps in South Korea random breathalyzer test is so common because South Korea has a drinking culture, like almost everybody, man and woman alike drinks (alcohol) and is expected to drink sometimes declining a drinking session can be rude or be treated like an outsider, unlike here in the Philippines that drinking is mostly done by men and is not necessarily ‘expected’ or ‘obligated’ of you
Looking or glancing on the side mirror when turning or changing lanes is not enough, side mirrors have their BLIND SPOTS. The driver must also turn his/her head and look over their shoulders of other vehicles.
I also get nervous whenever I drive and I think I suck more at parking 😅 buti I do not live there.. yet nabangga pa din ako before sa likod by an elf truck 😭 Ay dai, mas kabahan kpa lalo kung sa qc ka na mag ddrive esp in qc circle kasi sobrang bumper-to-bumper yung nga sasakyan.. even when I rode bus kinakabahan na ako na baka magscratch sa kilid yung mga sasakyan sa sobrang lapit (literally just inches apart). Way more difficult in changing lanes there. Pero I think you'll get way better and confident once you'll get used driving there..
Same here in Davao City, suddenly there will be police checkpoints to check on vehicles and talk to the drivers to see if they are drunk driving and they constantly change locations so it is hard to tell where they are.
its true.. casual drivers or people who rarely drive or never went to divisoria or baclaran and park and go. would say edsa is the hardest place to drive. but if you are a true blue manilenio like me and drove thru edsa and divi and baclaran day after day after day during my younger days. edsa is no comparison. edsa is cake compared to divi and baclaran.

you have the seat belt in the lower position, raise it up, the closer the neck it sits the safer it is, if you have it too low then the risk is that it slides off your shoulder during an accident, and then it can hurt you instead.
When changing lane, it's more reliable to "shoulder check" rather than checking the side mirror. By shoulder checking you can verify if it's clear to change lane and also to check the "blind spot".
I remember driving the first time in highway (NLEX). I’m with father which is very strict when it comes to the speed limits, speed limit in NLEX is 100 kph and since there were no other cars on the road, I thought I’m driving slow, but it’s already more than 120 kph when I check the speedo. Haha. Driving in highway for the first time is really satisfying.

I have lived in Saudi Arabia for 19 years so my first driving experience in the Philippines was mind-boggling, my dad let me drive from the airport to our house after he and my brothers left and the thing is he believes in me 100% so he let me drive while I haven't gotten my licence, I only had at that time was a Driver's Learner permit.

Be wary of the pedestrians who are crossing the streets. Many don't stop to look if there's a car coming or don't care about the stop light. Better to ask somebody who knows how to drive to guide you until you are very used to driving in the Philippines already.

Yeah driving in Korea while drunk is a BIG NO NO kahit saang bansa naman talaga bawal pero I find Korea very strict. Like big issue talaga especially kapag celebrities like that one young actress na nakabangga ng electric box dahil lasing siya tapos 8am pa, saw it sa socmed 1-2 days ago. Always be responsible in driving dahil it's close being a 'weapon' to hurt somebody or something.
Filipinos don’t drink and drive much so it’s not usual to have a random alcohol test. If you are overspeeding or swerving they can suspect you and might be asked to stop and tested

I havrn't driven in the Philippines for 38 years, but I used to drive there before we immigrated to the U.S. If you're familiar driving in the Philippines, it's hard to drive here because the rules are different (there are rules). Stopovers (rest areas in the U.S.) are mostly vending machines. You'll get the the hang of it when you drive always there. Like Kuya said, konting practice pa.

Coming to the Philippines from LA, which is notoriously bad for traffic, I was shell shocked for the first three days being in the car in PI. I'm generally even keel when driving, don't get too angry, don't try and cut people off or aggressive driving but holy crap that goes out the window out of sheer necessity. SO I can totally understand driving there for the first time to be an experience.
A piece of advice: Be extra careful of motorcycles. Sometimes they just come out of nowhere and just insert anywhere and if you hit them, even if it is their fault, you still have to pay their hospital bills.

Have you tried baked and chopped talong (or cooked on a hot plate over gas stove (removed the skin after cooking it), chopped fresh tomatoes, chopped fresh onions, chopped garlic, chopped chilli (labuyo) salt and pepper with lots of calamansi juice and toyo ( or delmonte vinegar, soy sauce and sugar(splenda) to taste)? This is great with fried and barbecued fish and meats. It's like kimchi to koreans. We normally eat this to counter or balance the oiliness of the meat specially. Atchara, is much more expensive and complicated to cook, but we also eat it with fried/barbecued fish and meat.
Also, eating this with any food will make the eating experience more filipino. Other provinces use their own vinegar lika sinamak of ilocona and tuba vinegar in southern luzon provinces. I prefer sweeter and spicier version of coconut vinegar. Btw, tuba vinegar is great if you have persistent dry cough. But, don't over use because it will make your body acidic.
You can also use fresh cucumber instead of talong.

“Stopovers” in USA are “meh”. Mainly gas stations and fast food chain places like McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, Denny’s. Sometimes, there is something like a roadside restaurant which are OK but I wouldn’t choose to go there on a regular basis. On Hwy 5 in California, there is ONE stop over destination I would recommend (Harris Ranch). They sell steaks (to take home and cook), hotel, restaurants (can get Prime Rib, ribeye, NY steak, etc). In between, they have “rest stops” where you mainly get out to stretch you legs, go to the bathroom and take a nap. Some have vending machines. But it’s mostly junk food and stuff loaded with preservatives.
They are nothing like the rest stops in Korea (that I have seen in Kdramas and Korean TV shows). Those I would actually want to go to as a destination. Clean bathrooms and good food.
believe me when I say that once you get the hang of driving in Manila, you will be a well rounded driver anywhere in the world. i know because it happened to me. expect not all drivers to follow traffic rules and regulations - you will see a lot of them. anticipate driver’s movement and motive in infront of you, whether while following a car, or a car facing you. your patience will be tested believe me. once you do get the hang of driving in Manila, the next problem is overconfidence, so always stay humble, patient and chill. safe driving Jessica, may you become a well rounded solo driver anywhere you go…

There should be an articulable reasonable explanation to conduct a traffic stop for drunk test. In the US, drivers can file charges of violation of their rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. And, this is a jurisprudence applicable in the Philippines. The constitutional rights and traffic stop laws in S Korea might be different. In my personal opinion, there are many drunks there like in japan.
Wow, drivers there are like the drivers in Queens (New York). While the ones in Long Island (also New York) are the ones that rush and don't use signals as often, they have a different law for signals.

if you get a hang on driving into the streets here in Manila you will be a better driver in other countries. I mean, with all the vehicles like tricycles, motorcycles, bikes, ebikes and pedestrians if you can evade all those things you will be a better driver. My advise, just bring a lot of patience because a lot of drivers will cut to your lane when they see a bit of space and be a defensive driver meaning looking at all the mirrors (sides and rear view) while driving if needed and when you see the tail lights in front of you light up just gradually apply on the brakes to maintain distance and will have ample time to avoid any traffic collision. maybe this is too much but it is for the safe travels when driving. Drive safe!

When turning left or right you cant rely in just your side mirrors because they still have blind spots. You have to do whats called a shoulder check as well. Lalo na sa pinas kasi biglang sumusulpot mga motor, trykes and pati tao.

when you lane change, you look at your side and rearview mirrors, and look over the shoulder, making sure its clear and then you complete the lane change, i think that helps, because its kinda hard to judge the distance if you only rely on your sideview mirror. but yeah good drive

@ 8:26 perhaps in South Korea random breathalyzer test is so common because South Korea has a drinking culture, like almost everybody, man and woman alike drinks (alcohol) and is expected to drink sometimes declining a drinking session can be rude or be treated like an outsider, unlike here in the Philippines that drinking is mostly done by men and is not necessarily ‘expected’ or ‘obligated’ of you
Looking or glancing on the side mirror when turning or changing lanes is not enough, side mirrors have their BLIND SPOTS. The driver must also turn his/her head and look over their shoulders of other vehicles.

Ay dai, mas kabahan kpa lalo kung sa qc ka na mag ddrive esp in qc circle kasi sobrang bumper-to-bumper yung nga sasakyan.. even when I rode bus kinakabahan na ako na baka magscratch sa kilid yung mga sasakyan sa sobrang lapit (literally just inches apart). Way more difficult in changing lanes there. Pero I think you'll get way better and confident once you'll get used driving there..

Same here in Davao City, suddenly there will be police checkpoints to check on vehicles and talk to the drivers to see if they are drunk driving and they constantly change locations so it is hard to tell where they are.
its true.. casual drivers or people who rarely drive or never went to divisoria or baclaran and park and go. would say edsa is the hardest place to drive. but if you are a true blue manilenio like me and drove thru edsa and divi and baclaran day after day after day during my younger days. edsa is no comparison. edsa is cake compared to divi and baclaran.

Pick Enough speed bago mag merge ng lane atleast 60kph, check side mirrors, wag tumambay sa overtaking lane. 100kph max speed 60kph min sa slex

When changing lane, it's more reliable to "shoulder check" rather than checking the side mirror. By shoulder checking you can verify if it's clear to change lane and also to check the "blind spot".
I remember driving the first time in highway (NLEX). I’m with father which is very strict when it comes to the speed limits, speed limit in NLEX is 100 kph and since there were no other cars on the road, I thought I’m driving slow, but it’s already more than 120 kph when I check the speedo. Haha. Driving in highway for the first time is really satisfying.
Practice everyday, drive lang lagi yan Ang secret Nyan, and pag aatras ka always remember wag Kang magtitiwala lang sa rear and side mirror, lumingon ka sa likod to make sure.

Tumitino na ang mga drivers sa NCR pero mag doble ingat ka kapag napadpad ka sa probinsiya hehe it's best to let kuya drive in the province due to their local driving mannerisms (na kadalasan mali).
I have lived in Saudi Arabia for 19 years so my first driving experience in the Philippines was mind-boggling, my dad let me drive from the airport to our house after he and my brothers left and the thing is he believes in me 100% so he let me drive while I haven't gotten my licence, I only had at that time was a Driver's Learner permit.

2. Look in your side mirror
3. Look over your shoulder (blind spot)
4. When safe make your move
Be wary of the pedestrians who are crossing the streets. Many don't stop to look if there's a car coming or don't care about the stop light. Better to ask somebody who knows how to drive to guide you until you are very used to driving in the Philippines already.

Yeah driving in Korea while drunk is a BIG NO NO kahit saang bansa naman talaga bawal pero I find Korea very strict. Like big issue talaga especially kapag celebrities like that one young actress na nakabangga ng electric box dahil lasing siya tapos 8am pa, saw it sa socmed 1-2 days ago. Always be responsible in driving dahil it's close being a 'weapon' to hurt somebody or something.
Filipinos don’t drink and drive much so it’s not usual to have a random alcohol test. If you are overspeeding or swerving they can suspect you and might be asked to stop and tested
