You're a braver man than I am opening up the lens lol. Although as we move forward through the space time continuum I'm starting to get a little more confidence. Thanks for showing us the process mate!
How do I convert my GH5 to an Arri Alexa?
just buy my LUTS
50K
😂😂🙏🏽
If you want to remove stuck screws, never use force. Force will break the head of the screw and then it'll be hell to remove it. Use the proper screwdrivers : JIS screwdrivers. If it's stuck, apply a drop of lighter fluid or alcohol and wait a bit. If it's still stuck, apply some heat with a soldering iron to the head for 10 seconds
All EF convertions are designed to work on DSLR bodies. Which is devastating for lenses with fixed rear element because it moves the rear element to the front and this is changing the optical scheme. So if you think that your FD L lens (most of them are with fixed rear element) is going to perform the same after converting it - you can't be more wrong.
Most of the current cool old FDs with fixed rear element were modified at one point of their life. I bought 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 L lenses back in the days and they were pretty soft. I shiped them to an old service guy and he explained to me that he can fix them and why they are in this condition. It was a huge change in the performance after he reassembled them. No my 85 1.2 L is way sharper than the newer AF model (EF 85 1.2L II). Same for the 50 1.2 L. Unfortunately this guy do not work anymore and he was old, probably all the people that know how to do this are pretty old now too. And the equipment he was using is kinda rare because after the relubing he performed realignment of the lens elements that were removed which is something nobody do but is super important if you do not want your precise Japanese instrument to work like a Russian lens assembled by drunk people :).
My advice - use those lenses on mirrorless cameras!
Does it apply to Zeiss Contax too?
@@guillaumedelhumeau5746 not exactly. But is tehre is a lens that naturally hits the mirror with its rear element the modification can be destructive. As far as I know this is a problem mainly with FD lenses because their flange distance is shorter and they were one of the first in history using aspherical lens elements. Guess what - the aspherical element is exactly the rear one that I was talking about.
Contax lenses most of the time are reversable after modding because they are adaptable with simple adapter to EF and you have to remove only the clicks of the aperture ring and the aperture lever. This do not require optical interventions.
@@SimeonKolev Hi Simeon, nervous about this as well for my BMPCC6K. Do you think this would be fine on a Super 35 sensor?
@@NickAcevedomusic what I was talking about does not have anything to do with the sensor size :). It is a problem of ruining a lens like forever because the people that are able to fix it are getting old and go out of business.
So my advice will be - leave the FD lenses as they are if the rear element is fixed. The ones with simpler optical formula are going to work like nothing happened. The ones that are more complicated the rear element is fixed and needs to be moved - they will not work the same as they were. How much worse ... it depends but worse is for sure what you will get.
@@SimeonKolev Ohhh interesting. Good point
Sometimes it helps to heat up the screws with a soldering iron first. They may have like loctite on them.
Also, cannot recommend an iFixit kit enough. One of my favorite things I've bought this year.
@@StephenHildreth I thought ifixit was a shame until I got their kit.
True, but be careful as some threads (like the 50mm 1.8) are just plastic
I'm thinking about doing this to my FD and nFD lenses to remove one of the two adapters I need to use: Canon FD to EF, EF to FX speedbooster. That might make handling these a lot easier and faster.
I'm also looking into adding dandelion chips to the lenses. This way they can report their focal length to the camera (aperture too but it has no way of knowing the current setting so it will just report the one programmed - open aperture for me).
Could you possibly just buy a factory ef mount and use that? The metal might hold up better? Asking because I want to try this but not sure about the 3d printed part.
What would be the smartest way to put a old vintage 28mm fd lens to a canon t7 dslr? I been trying to figure it out but all the terms and definitions are a headache to understand. Do you have a simple method that this can be achieved? I know I should avoid canon fd lenses to do this but but that’s about it.. please any advice would be gold right now.
Hey, great video! Have you used these converted lenses with a speedbooster for mft for example? I'd love to do this but I'm concerned that the rear element would touch the glass of the speedbooster damaging it...
does infinity focus still work properly with the shapeways kit for FDn?
So in 2023 I now have my set of FD lenses on the way that I'm going to convert directly to EF! For the 3d printed focus ring is that a file you have I could download and give to a friend who has a 3d printer or do you have a link to where I can get them because I would definitely love to get those rings for them!
The set I have coming is 24f2.8 35f2.8 50f1.8 85f2.8 and 135f2.8
whats up with the ringing/ hiss in your audio?
Makeup and Vanity Set during the first segment.
Hey Spenser, thanks for sharing this video. Which material did you pick when buying the mount/arm(s)? I worry that some of those materials can wear and release residue on the lens, or even worse, the camera sensor. All the materials and 3D printing methods listed (on Shapeways) are powder-based... Something to consider.
So I use a FD 70-210 with an EF adapter would this help with the color issues where there is weird color outlines around the subject?
Tilta has some seamless focus gears for just $2
I only know their 12€ rings.
Thanks for sharing dude, can be such a pain in the b*tch to take apart with threaded screws and springs flying all over the shop! I also did the Shapeways mod on my FDN 35mm f2, but didn't want to risk the shapeways with my 50mm f1.2 L. Good to know that Simmod now offer a more durable mount with the correct arm. I actually had to the Shapeways apertur arm down for the 35mm which didn't make me too confident about trying the mod for my other 20mm f2.8 or 85mm FDN lenses.
Do the Shapeway mods work for the 2.8 and 1.8 aperture lens models? I am looking at making a kit but have a lower budget so will have to make due with the cheaper aperture options for now..
this was like being forced to watch my child have open-heart surgery.
Great content and great update. Or old video was good too, just much better quality here.
Hello. Can you tell me if it is possible to purchase only the 3d model for printing the adapter? The site does not deliver to my country. I live in Brazil
Im not sure. Sorry.
What is the difference using this method compared to adapters? I use mirrorless bodies.
Mirrorless style bodies can adapt these fine but you will have issues when using them on ef cinema cameras. This just makes them more flexible that way.
Does this procedure provide infinity focus? Or with different words, is ist reducing the distance between sensor and Lens by 2 mm compared to ef?
You will have infiniti focus using this method.
I dont know what i did wrong but i cant focus to infinity on my 17 f4, 24 f2.8, 35 f2. On my 85mm f1.8 and 100mm f2.8 it works fine
Dude! I know and have worked with Ron Sim, the creator of SimMod! Nice
Oh, and it's pronounced "sim," as in "simulation"
If you're shooting on MFT, would you just convert to FD to EF then Metabones SB to MFT? Or is there a better way to convert FD to MFT?
Depends on your future applications but they do make fd focal reducers which would be a much easier first step.
Did changing the mount messed up the focus? Do you still get infinity ?
same doubt for me
is there a difference in image quality or look comparing the nfd and ssc?
yes. the nfds are newer designs, have more modern codings and as such are a little sharper, less prone to flaring/ aborations etc.
in other words, the ssc are pretty dirty, the nfds still have a vintage feel to them but are more modern looking.
i like the nfds, i dont want to fight flares that obstruct half the frame.
@@xx1simon1xx Thank you, I want the one that has more of the modern look that is not too vintage looking.
When will version 2.0 be ready
great stuff Spenser!
Silly question; why not just buy a more expensive contax zeiss etc with a cheap adapter instead of this modded nfd.
Seems the 3D printer ones are the only ones available now, darn
waiting for RF mod!
Outstanding.
is there anyway to do this on fuji?
You can use an adapter to fuji x mount, this is not possible for ef mount
@@luanzondervan7402 well yeah I’m aware of that but my question is, is there a bayonet mount conversion for Fuji so I won’t have to use an adapter. That’s kinda the point of the video so I’m asking is it possible only other brands
you could either get a fd-xmount speedbooster/adapter or convert the lens to ef then get an ef-xmount speedbooster/adapter, the second option is pricier up front but would allow you to both use other ef lenses on your fuji or use the lenses on other systems
@@CianMcsweeney I'm not a photographer anymore haha
Spenser often sounds like Michael Cera.
What about FD to E-Mount for a7s III?
E-mount to EF Mount with Speedbooater then Change the lens fd to ef
@@noahlebel-turcotte4662 Speedbooster on Fullframe?
@@NirnBootMod oups sorry i thought Sony was mft. I will reply to you when I will get the info.
Just put a regular dumb adapter in between it. Cheap and easy for e mount.
@@SeanvanBerlo that would change de focus range since you are spacing the lens from the sensor?
Is it possible to mount an M50 lens on an EF mount body?
No The flange distance doesn't make it possible
the eos m ecosystem is terrible anyways
thank you dude! i really wanna get one of these nuddy 55mm lenses one day, i hope i can finally make some money as a video man guy soon so i can justify that investment to my gf, haha!
that 35mm lens was gnarly as hell tho. yikes!
Felt pretty weird only seeing your face instead of what you were doing for most of it
When buying these vintage type lenses are you concerned about the radioactive ☢️ properties that some of them have - camerapedia.fandom.com/wiki/Radioactive_lenses ? 😰
No one should be concerned about this sort of thing the radiation is in the coatings. The only risk would be in somehow breathing the dust of the lens coating or ingesting the dust of the lens coating. even at that its not a death/poor health sentence. Thorium is a beta particle emitter, and in the thorium oxide component of lenses it makes up about 30 percent of the composition. Beta particles are not particularly harmful unless ingested our skin and clothing does a more than adequate job of stopping them. If you treat your lenses properly and with care the coating will remain on the lense and mitigate nearly all of the risk of internalizing any of the coatings.
so chill about screwing up this guys lens lol poor guy :(
shity audio
This is a scheme! Just bought the 3D PRINTED EF MOUNT... And it's horrible!!! Cheap plastic!!! It´s just horrible.
