These are my go to styles for summer. Since it is literally at least 80 degrees in our house at all times (thanks swamp cooler) my hair rarely stays down all day.
These styles are great because they work well with any thickness of hair. If you have less hair than just fluff and pull at the bun to make it bigger.
This video is 8 minutes long but keep in mind that I do each style twice, so they really only take 1 minute each to do!
The first style is our signature messy bun. I have done a tutorial for this before on myself, but I have changed it up a little bit, so I figured an updated tutorial would be good!
Style 1- Q's Hairdos Signature Messy Bun
I added some dry shampoo before I started this style
Pull all of the hair up until desired height (mine is just about on the top of my head)
Take a thick elastic and wrap it around your ponytail once (or twice if it is still loose)
Put the elastic back in the dominant hand and twist then hold keeping the elastic on your fingers
Now split the ponytail in half
Curl the top half up and hold with your top fingers
Curl the bottom half down and hold with your thumb
Pull the remaining elastic over top of the hair and let go
Adjust the hair until you like the shape and height
Now take the ends on the top and tuck them back into the elastic, do the same on the bottom
Once you have the messy bun looking how you want it, I add clear mascara (which I will link below) to keep my baby hairs in place.
I also like to pull at my hair in the front to loosen it up a bit and pull out some pieces to frame
This makes it look more lived in rather than tight against your head
If you have shorter pieces in the back that fall out like I do, you can twist the hair and then take a bobby pin and push the pin down into the hair to keep it in place.
Style 2- Adapted from Missy Sue ( / msncook11 )
Pull the hair up onto the top of your head
Take a thick elastic and wrap it around your ponytail once (or twice if it is still loose)
Put the elastic back in the dominant hand and twist then hold keeping the elastic on your fingers
Make sure all five fingers are through the elastic to hold the hair easier for this next part
Fan the hair around the elastic
Now grab the hair with the fingers through the elastic and pull the elastic over the hair keeping a round shape of the hair
Adjust the bun until desired height and shape
Take all of the ends and put them back through the elastic in the front
Adjust the hair and ends until you like it
To finish style 2, I pull at the hair in the front to loosen it up and frame the face as well. Use clear mascara if desired.
Style 3- Twisted Messy Bun
Pull the hair up onto the top of your head
Take a thick elastic and wrap it around your ponytail once (or twice if it is still loose)
Put the elastic back in the dominant hand and twist then hold keeping the elastic on your fingers
Grab the ponytail and twist it until it starts curling around
Wrap it in a donut shape tucking the ends under
Pull the elastic over the hair and secure at the base
Now pull and adjust the hair until desired look
Tuck loose ends in the elastic in the back
Use clear mascara to tame the stray hairs
Loosen the hair in the crown section and frame the face with desired hair.

Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, I tried this messy bun (your signature messy bun) and it came out FANTASTIC!! This is the only one I do now! It's my go to signature bun now.
I’m so glad! Thanks so much for sharing!
Staci Jarvis which one is her signature bun?
It worked
?!
Which one is the signature one???
On the signature messy bun, if you have thin hair like me, and you can’t make a full second circle with the tips of your hair, try wrapping it around the ponytail holder multiple times, works like a charm
Thank you 🙏 I will try that!
I have pretty thick hair so its hard for me to do a messy bun but when i tried this it worked out soo good
Oh I am so glad to hear that!
Leona Maran same!
MY HAIR IS SOOO THICK
Same
I cant imagine doing this because once it's done... How do I take it out of my hair without making a huge knot?!
Cookie Frenzy pull out the ends that you curl back into the elastic first, then the bun, then the ponytail. It’s really not that complicated 😊❤️
Wxactly now I have a huge knot in my hair
@@amelia8927 brush it
I guess my hair is too thin? No matter who’s video my hair is ALWAYS floppy and never tight.
Have you tried our other tutorial? Maybe this one will help you! ruclips.net/video/pSHzwwVx_Kc/видео.html
Messy buns work best on thicker 'dirty' hair. Try the bun on hair that hasn't been washed for a few days and use dry shampoo. I have fine sorta thin hair and this is the only way it works for me.
Agh my hairs too thick 😭😭
Charli N my hairs to thick and puffy it never comes together and is always floppy never tight I can’t get it in a bun
A way to add volume to ur hair is to take ur comb or brush and brush opposite ways and itll get more thicker
I've literally been trying to do messy buns for years and this is the only one that has ever worked with my hair.
I am so glad to hear that!
i've had enough hair to do a double bun, but not the knowledge...now i have both! for years i've been using an additional hair piece for the bottom bun, which can be heavy. i'm 70 years old and still learning and loving the new trends. thank you, so much for sharing, without you, i would just be a grandma with a ponytail !!
So glad you found it helpful!
Yeah
I have super thick hair and I have had zero luck getting a cute messy bun look for YEARS. Girl. You just changed my hair's life. ❤❤❤
Sorry for the delay but I am so glad to hear this! ❤️
My hair was so freaking heavy I got a cramp in my arm 😂
Ikr it’s soo thick lol
Thanks for making hairstyling fun and easy to learn! 😄
Omg I’ve been looking through different videos for about half an hour now because my hair is very thick, and that last method worked!! Thank you!!!!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Thanks this worked so well!! And really? Only 31 comments so far? You deserve way more to tell u how great and special u are ❤😉
Thanks so much! You just made my day! Kindness makes the world go round ❤️
Thanks Tessi! My hair used to always stick out whenever I tried to put it in a bun, but now has been resolved after watching your video. It worked great for me! Thank you!
The third one is perfect for my thick hair! I've tried so many messy buns so far, and i've finally found what i was looking for! Thank u so much!
So glad to hear it! ❤️
THANK YOU I have spent YEARS trying to do a messy bun (apparently I was born without the default girl skill of creating messy buns) but I tried the third style and IT WORKED 😭
I’m so glad to hear that!
@@TessiWood I'm really struggling when it comes to tucking the ends back into the elastic band - my hair is very thick and completely straight so the ends just won't cooperate. Are these any tricks that I should know of? Like, does it matter how tight or how loose the elastic band is before tucking the ends back in? I've been looking for the best and easiest way of putting my hair into a messy top knot for years but I just can't find a method that actually works in my hair without using 15-20 bobby pins 😉
Practice makes perfect with this and I finally got it - style #1 is by far my fave! I have long thick curly hair - with my old top knot style I put it almost on the top of my head but with this style if I do that it looks HUGE. So I found that putting my initial ponytail a bit lower (or further back) on my head makes it look perfect. THANK YOU!!! Excited to watch more of your tutorials!
I've gone through endless tutorials until I finally came across your video that actually worked.
I’m so glad to hear it!
I found this one bun tutorial that I based my signature bun on but I couldn't remember where I had gotten it from and now that I have turned to youtube to find more bun tutorials I realized that it was the last bun that you do so thank you very much for the easy but cute bun ideas. I plan on graduating to your 2 other buns because I loved how cute and simple the one I use is. Thanks Tessi you a queen
you kinda sound like violet from the incredibles and I'm not mad at it
TiffyTender I see my name and I’m like “why she talking bout me?”
Yeah you're right😱
Omg yas
Yeah I thought that too XD
I need a separate tutorial for thick hair 🤦♀️🤣my hair is so long and thick I can do hardly anything with it to hold a ponytail up I have to use 2-3 hair ties and it gives me headaches
*Edit*
Wow! Thank you🙏🏼so much for three likes I’ve never gotten likes on a comment before! *Edit* I come back after a year forgetting abt this comment and it has 93 likes😳 thank you sm ❤️
I feel you 😂. For me what normally works is doing some kind of messy up do by doing a standard "messy bun" an d pinning random pieces down until it's stable on your head. Hope you figure out something that works for you!
omggg ikr I feel like jojo siwa sometimes... 😂😂
Try the last one. I have thick hair too but this one actually worked. When I did it (I think I did it incorrect) but it turned into a vsco girl bun 😂🤣 but yea try it out
Here’s what I do: First act like you are going to pull your hair into a kinda high ponytail (mid length), then start from the top and twist until a little tight all the way down your hair, then take the hair a and turn it into a circle to make a bun shape. Secure with a scrunchie (or elastic) and you’re done!
my hairs so thick that i have to use 5-10 hair ties.
Thank you! I'm going to try all 3 off these.
This helped sooooo much thanks!! Finally someone that has the same amount of hair as me!
This was the best tutorial so far, I don't have bobby pins and I don't like them but I wanted to know how to do a top bun
So glad to hear it!
Very creative! Stands out among so many other ways of doing this hairstyle. I will try them, just the twist on a technique I've been looking for. I like the use of clear mascara, too.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it! ❤️
I loved that the video was straight to the point and you explained all styles in such a detailed manner.Subscribed🙂👍🏻

That first bun is fantastic 😻 very excited to try it
i have thick and long hair with layers so messy buns just dont work for me without tucking 100 hair pins!!! but the last style did work for me pretty well without a single pin and it did not budge!!! loads of love to you. keep going girl.

Try the first one but with two elastics. One for the ponytail and then one for the messy bun part. Curl the ends back through a few times. Hope that helps!
