I sat in the front row of the Birchmere in 1985 and watched New Grass perform this tune. Pat Flynn stepped in front of his mic and took the coolest break to this song. It was the musical event of my lifetime!
New Grass Revival was most exciting live band of all time!

I enjoyed NGR playing at Kyoto Educational hall in Japan. Couldn't stand up after the show as I was knocked down by their power with love. But somehow reached Sanjo station on my way home. Twas good memory.

I saw them perform this song many times in the 80s at The Down Home in Johnson City, Tennessee. Best live band performances I ever saw....NGR was always top notch...you just got lost in it...the whole crowd always did!

Down Home Pickin' Parlor - Johnson City, TN. (Tank's place, if you go back that far. lol) Watching these guys play in that small venue (75 seats) in the late 70s/early80s was amazing. Great venue! Saw Sam there April Fools Day this year. These guys and Metro Blues All-Stars, were my favorite "regulars".

At a small club in early 80's after they'd just done Souvenir Bottles and a couple other scorching songs, they're soakin' wet with sweat, huffin' n puffin'..... I blurted "Saporro!!!!", to which Sam responded "ya tryin' ta KILL us????"
One subtle but significant talent in this band that's very rare in even bands with many, many years together is they listen to and play with AND off of each other. It's easy for members to play their individual parts of a song and end at the same time...... for 98% of performing bands that's adequate. Having seen/heard this band 10+ times in a club so small you were arm's length away, I noticed their incredible sense of unity, which comes ONLY from listening to each other at all times. It's all over this performance!!!! That's very much of the magic of this band.... not just the fact each one of them is a terrifyin' player.
MUCH gratitude for sharing this amazing session :)

These musicians are mesmerizing. My brother, Scott, used to play with Pat Flynn around Aspen in the late 70s, before Pat joined NGR. He was something special then, too. I really miss them.

Awesome. This is something that Billy Strings needs to attempt.

Thank you for posting this!! Wish the whole thing played but it stops just a tad short. Actually, they were the first to "adapt that sensibility" to bluegrass music, not country music (and they caught hell from the BG traditionalists), back when Curtis Burch and Courtney Johnson were with them in the 70's, on the heels of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album. We (young rockers) loved them! And they were the nicest guys. And "jam" they did! The first to do it in country music was Area Code 615, studio musicians that got together and recorded with some bluegrass masters. I was 18 when I heard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", and Area Code 615 "Trip in the Country", and 21 when I heard NGR's first album (I was stationed in Germany from 73-75). Saw them perform the 1st time in Rock Hill, SC. in 1978, (I'm 60 now). When Curtis and Courtney left, we speculated that Tony Trishcka and Jerry Douglas would join them, perhaps Tony Rice. But it was Bela and Pat who joined them. We were all a little freaked out, and afraid they were done cause we'd never heard of Bela or Pat. Then they came to Green Acres Music Hall in Rutherford County, NC to perform. (They played there often in the late 70's and early 80's). They were hardly done, they jacked it up a notch and kept on becoming the masters they are today. They were and still are incredible musicians that forged an expansion of the style and the audience for bluegrass across the country, making it the sound it is today with young people around the world loving it and learning it. So glad I got to hear it happen through the years. Again, thanks for posting this great tune!

Saw this lineup 30 years ago from the front row in a ~100 seat venue. Saw Sam Bush Band last night in my little hometown venue with 300 friends and neighbors. I've seem him at lots of festivals in between but those are 2 of the most memorable shows of my life.

Bela's banjo playing in early 80's was without equal..... "ridiculous" would apply :) what was quite amusing was him playing the arcade game "Galaga" between sets..... I'd get about 2 minutes before "Game Over", he's on Level 20-something when it's back to the show :) And that was his LEFT hand firing away :)
