When I was young, I got sick and had a fever for about a month. Once I was laying on a couch, got very tired, and stated falling asleep. I went into a draw where I was falling and jolted awake. I kicked my dog off the couch and onto the floor, while my mother was watching and laughing.
I have incorporated the following routine and it helps tremendously. Reduce anxiety, take bedtime tea helps you sleep (no caffeine) breathing exercise before bedtime. Check your nutritional level with your doctor. Vitamin D, Magnesium and B12
+DogeThe Doge I'd guess it's a sensation of LOSING CONTROL as one part of the brain loses control of your thoughts and switches the control to another part of the brain. Sometimes while falling asleep, I feel like I'm floating 2 feet off the ground and moving at walking speed, and think I wonder what the secret to doing this is. Perhaps that's why it's called FALLING asleep (But I sometimes float of drift off into dream land).
I Think it may be something an ancestor did that if they fell from a tree while asleep they would stand up to hopefully break the fall and evolution occurred
What are eye bags and what do they do/ how do they appear (other than not getting that much sleep) I mean I get plenty and always have bags under my eyes)
+gmd_nate2504 I've wondered that too. Ever since I started wearing glasses regularly, I got perpetual dark bags for some reason (not because of a lack of sleep, I sleep more than enough just fine); something I noticed in every full-time glasses-wearing person I know (excluding sunglasses). Didn't go away even after I started wearing contacts.
Actually lack of sleep has nothing to do with it. The biggest factor is not having a sleep schedule. This means sleeping and the same time every day and waking up at the same time everyday. Another factor is sunburn, apply sunscreen under your eyes! Also no rubbing it.
when this happens to me it feels like I’m falling from a high place, I used to fall from heights a lot in my dreams, and I would always be terrified, felt so real
i love the feeling of hypnic jerks. it almost feels like falling through a cloud. its like you can feel your body fall but it doesnt but it feels good.
I had the falling sensation twice, first time scared me and woke up with heart racing! The second time i decided to sleep through it even tho it was scary "falling through the bed sensation" and picking up speed... then consciously entered a dream state where i was flying and was able to control my dream so decided to land on a beach.
+Paulpro PP that's some amazing self-control skills there, entering a lucid dream state is hard already by itself, entering it during "sleep falling" it's on a whole other level.
iota-09 yea it happened during a time where i wasn't sleeping well at night plus we had been staying over at a cousins place which made sleep even more difficult "trying to sleep on an air mattress" it was during this time this happened those 2 nights in a row. i couldn't sleep so just lay there very still trying to relax.
I have multiple times fallen asleep and felt the sensation of flipping around and seeing everything spin around me. The momentum of the rotation in my dream causes me to fly forward in real life.
Every time I get this "jerk" It feels like I fell off my bed for a second. And it's like when I'm dreaming and fall off my bike or something it just happens.
This is one of those questions that you always want to find the answer to but is never important enough to look in to. And then one day you get bored and decide to finally look it up.
I'm watching RUclips videos (albeit educational SciShow ones) because almost every night I experience sleep twitches for up to 2 hours when trying to sleep. I do all the usual things to encourage sleep (no caffeine, no late night food etc) & my phone & tablet are switched off. Instead of staying in bed I'll try walking around the house or reading but I end up switching on the internet as amazingly this helps me relax then fall asleep without the bloody twitching! Oh to have a nice pharmaceutical knock out, to get relief from the nightly battle with my autonomous systems (no wonder so many of the rich & famous have paid doctors who supply them with sleeping drafts)
3 Times When l Was 5-6 I Had Dreams Some Nights After Many Days, I Dremt About Me And My Dad, Walking Up The Stairs, Tall Spiral Stairs, So l Go Up Them, Behind My Dad, Then The Wood Breaks, Leaving Me To Fall, My Tummy Tickled, Then l’d Wake Up Like This “(EYES WIDE OPEN) OH MY GOD...”
I read somewhere some time ago it was because of some part in the brain that when noticing your pulse getting too low it believes you are actually dying, not just falling asleep, so it gives you a shake as a way to keep you alive xD I was more or less something like that, can't remember were I saw it but I do remember it was a proper scientific explanation from a good source, not just some shady info from a random site. Now I dunno, but I do have those, I kinda like them actually xD
Just had a hypnic jerk. Woke me up from my amazing sleep. I imagined I was spinning in outer space and then slowly fell. Then my leg shaked. It felt so real
This has happened to me a couple times, sometimes it’s from a large height, but one time in my dream I literally fell off a chair and woke up with a jerk
I finally get an answer I thought i didn’t know what it was I just knew every time I slipped, fell, kicked, punched, and or jumped it would happen outside of my dream😭 I would get punch something or someone in my dream and end up punching someone or something irl😂
I remember a few years ago someone told me the brain does this because it thinks you are dying as you are moving through the stages too quickly so the brain picks up on a sudden lower breathing rate and less activity and sort of "jolts" you to make sure you aren't dead
Has anyone had this problem Like pink wavy lines fly out after opening a door in a dream With fairy pixy dust sounds and it jolts you awake the moment it touches you
This literally happens to me 5 out of 7 days a week... What's weird is the more tired I am the more intense the sleep jerk... It's crazy how bad I jump.
the side effect from one of my medications is those jerks. I hate them. I have bad dreams almost every night and it scares me to try to go back to sleep. they make my whole body twitch with out my consent. I'm getting a little more used to them as I fall asleep, but the ones after a few hours of dead sleep are the ones I am irritated about.
When I was abt to sleep I dreamt about falling of a building I was laying in my bed then I jumped I fricken yelled so loud it woke up the whole neighborhood
I fricking hate these. last night, when i'm drifting off to sleep, I could still see around my room, but i'm dreaming at the same time, and i was running from something or someone(i can't remember), then i tripped over something(it was weird because i felt like i was falling off a building a top speed even though i was only tripping) and right before i hit the ground, i had a hypnotic jerk and almost fell off my bed. they scared the f out of my i swear
It´s simpler than that. As fall asleep, your body gets somewhat numb. So you dont"t feel the bed under your body, and your brain phantasizes that you are falling. It's long been known how some dreams are created by real stimuli that happen when you are dreaming. You really don't need to resource to this "primate falling from a tree" thing.
I don't feel like I'm falling or get scared from a nightmare...I just wake up suddenly from a deep sleep...It's creeping me out cuz it happens almost every night
I've had several"sleep jerks" lately. and it is probably due to stress. But mine happen when I wake up the following morning. and if my hand it near my face or body, I have scratched myself pretty good a few times because of it. I have a scar on my face where I woke up in a panic or jerk and I was sleeping on my side with my hand under my face and I jerked awake and took a chunk out off my face. I have also done it to my chest. For me at least, I know it's due to stress. I have a lot going on. Also, the stress has made me dream multiple times a night. I dream so often and the dreams so real that I often have trouble separating dreams from memories...
I haven't got a nice sleep and got a sleep disorder after I experienced this Hypnic jerk for 3 months. It's a problem need to be shut down right away, don't say to yourself it's not a big deal.
Army Basic Training 🤣 i had to sleep on the top bunk and when i start falling asleep i almost roll off the bunk and have that scary jolt to wake up and move
this happens all the time. I'm just peacefully drifting off about to fall asleep and then I see a skeleton jump up from the floor in my dream and I'm just like hOLLLHHYY SHJTJKE
O me gosh. Weird. So once I was asleep (only once) and my dad walks into my room he looked at me and I woke up and my whole body flinched. He was probably thinking “the f wrong with mah child” or “OH MY GOD SHES POSSESED” I can tell that he walked into my room because he was standing at my door.
Can anyone tell me what my friend did to me one time at a local pool? She asked me if I wanted to see a trick. I said yes and she instructed me to lie down on the flat pavement. It couldn't have taken longer than 3-4 minutes of her periodically lifting up my legs, maybe my arms a couple of times before I felt like I was floating while lying on the flat ground. It was very similar to how I feel before experiencing hypnic jerks, just without the jerk sensation. It was really freaky and neat. Does this ring any bells to anyone?
it feels like your soul is slowly exiting your body.......and then trips for no damn reason
Isaac Alinda LOL
*OR WHAT U DREAM SO INTENSE THAT U CAN FLOAT & FLY OUT OF YOUR HOUSE AND GO ANYWHERE!*
Isaac Alinda exactly same feels 100% and heart beating
ummm i think u are getting confused thats an outer body experience not a sleep jerk bro.
@@Fish-kz8xw that's literally what o do in my dreams
When this happens to me, it feels like I'm about to roll off a cliff or some terribly great height.

Oh The Lord is so innocent
+Jewel Sikder it's a serious condition called sexsomnia, and it sometimes makes people mutilate themselves in their sleep. The more you know.
+Jewel Sikder I was about to say something very similar aha
I fucking hate it, feels like I'm legit DYING. Happens about 1-2 times a month
Same 😂
it happens all the time for me
u sure it isnt sleep paralysis?
If you think that feels like your dying and you hate it you have a world of hell coming for you lifes hard
I think you're mistaking sleep jerks for periods

Maybe my subconscious just want to know what it feels like to jump without consequence.
lol
Anyone still has these in 2019?

I was cozy in bed, half dreaming about jump ropes.
Then the jump rope hit the floor.
And I jumped up. Now I'm watching this.
all these people who feel as if they are separating from their body, could easily learn to astral project! start with relaxing...muscles....go places!
Non of my family understands! This happens to me ALL the time. Same dream and everything. My most recent one actually was different though.
This has happened to me a couple times, sometimes it’s from a large height, but one time in my dream I literally fell off a chair and woke up with a jerk

@Ceci Hi
I'm still struggle to get a good night sleep
I don’t even remember having a dream about it it was just blackness then I felt this weird falling sensation
The only time I do this is when I'm trying to take a nap in school.
thank-you. my gf noticed it.Asked me about it.I didnt know.
I just this just today when taking a nap 😯
I find this so fun when it happens 😆
I only occasionally get them violent enough to actually wake me up. Tonight was one of those. Imagined myself falling off a horse
I remembered when I was sleeping so peaceful, then 5 hours later I hypnic jerk and I woke up screaming
I used to get them all the time. The problem was my feet would touch the wall when I went to bed.
Right before I sleep, I will feel like I fell down on a trampoline, it happens every night
Army Basic Training 🤣 i had to sleep on the top bunk and when i start falling asleep i almost roll off the bunk and have that scary jolt to wake up and move
This used to happen to me so much when I was a child, i would suddenly wake up like wtf
For me it feels like im falling off a step of stairs lol then I wake up feeling like I tripped and get anxiety from it.
this happens all the time. I'm just peacefully drifting off about to fall asleep and then I see a skeleton jump up from the floor in my dream and I'm just like hOLLLHHYY SHJTJKE

I think when you feel like you’re falling, you’ve died in your sleep and angels pick you up but then drop you. Just my theory.
Lol it only happens when I’m asleep at my desk or something at school but it’s like I tripped or something 😂
Oddly, this happens more when I nap, then sleep for the night.
my hands go flying in the air when i have mine
This kept on happening to me repeatedly last night..
This happens to me too but it's starting to happen less
Is that why when you start to fall asleep in class and you try not to, your head jumps all the time?
What about the sensation of spinning while you're sitting down?
I remember I had a dream where I was falling and I woke up moving my arms.
last night i feel like i got shot and i got scared af!
i almost woke my sister.

It feels like falling i feel embarrassed in school that happens to me
This just started happening to me.
It happens to me at times and it’ has happened on buses a few times before
Usually before I jump, I have such a vivid image of me falling and hitting the ground that Ill literally jerk out of my bed
My friend is sleeping next to me at the moment 😂and he started jumping in like wtf twice so that’s why I’m here 😂
Sometimes when I turn, I feel like I'm on the edge of my bed, when I'm not. Is that the same?
It's 1 am in the morning and it just happened to me
Can anyone tell me what my friend did to me one time at a local pool? She asked me if I wanted to see a trick. I said yes and she instructed me to lie down on the flat pavement. It couldn't have taken longer than 3-4 minutes of her periodically lifting up my legs, maybe my arms a couple of times before I felt like I was floating while lying on the flat ground.
