    I honestly think Lebron deserved DPOY in 2012 over Chandler. Led the league in Defensive Box Plus Minus, 2nd in Defensive Win Shares, (Chandler was not no.1), 8th in Defensive Rating (higher than Chandler. His team was 4th in defensive rating whilst the Knicks were 5th. Those are pretty much every single defensive stat that exists and Lebron was higher than Chandler in all of them. If Gasol deserved in 2012 because of his numbers than Lebron deserved it in 2012 for his numbers. Numbers were the reason why Giannis won it in 2020 over Davis after all

    • @roundtable3501
      @roundtable3501 8 месяцев назад +5

      None of those are defensive stats, besides team defensive rating. Individual defensive rating is just part of the team stat. Most of those are subjective formulas created that have large margin of errors. I don’t think one should use them at all and just look at a person’s actual defense. Lebron wasn’t a top 3 defender in 2012. Gasol, Garnett, or Howard all had a better case for winning it. Lebron just didn’t have the rim protection to be good enough. I do agree that chandler didn’t deserve it. And in 2020, neither Davis or Giannis should’ve won it, Gobert should’ve.

    Playing with other great defenders could be also a cons: if a player is the main defender of his team, the team stats are more unbalanced in his favour, while playig with other defensive players can be a damage to the indiviual stats, since the defensive actions are "spread out" to more players.
    If Gasol made this stats while having "competition" in his own roster, then those stats are more remarkable, plus being the key player in a superior defensive team is itself another pros for the award. And the plus/minus stat is a sort of measurement of the defensive efficiency DESPITE the other players.
    And for the fact that he won DPOY but didn't make 1st defensive team, this is not a news: DPOY is based on votes on the single player and nothing more, and is a "everybody vs everybody" ranking, while the voting for the All-defensive team the comparison are based on roles. This means that if in the DPOY there are many players on similar roles, in the All-def team for that role they face more competitions and lose points. Practically speaking, Someone can vote for Gasol as 1st individually, giving him an edge on DPOY rankings, but in the defensive team he put Gasol as C or PF, and LBJ as SF, giving them the same points for All-def-team voting. And someone else that voted for LBJ or another Big , when voting the defensive team, didn't put Gasol as C or PF.
    In the specif case, in 2013 the first 6 spots of the DPOY rankings were 4 big men (Gasol, Ibaka, Noah, Duncan), while LeBron was the only SF as main role and Tony Allen the only Guard. This means a nearly sure presence of LBJ and Allen in the All-def team, while the votes for C and PF where more spread out, mostly between the 4 above. (The Point Guard of the selection was Chris Paul, 9th in the DPOY).
    The same thing could happen also for the Season MVP vs All-NBA team voting, and actually that happens 3 times: in 1961 and 62 Bill Russell won the Season MVP, but in the All-NBA 1st team as center he was behind Wilt Chamberlain, and in 1973 Dave Cowens won MVP, but as C for the All-NBA 1st team Kareem get more votes.
    Again the reason was the higher competion for the specific role in the team voting.
    I find it simple to understand, there is no reason to call it a scandal

    • @YoMrRice
      @YoMrRice 8 месяцев назад +1

      Amazing comment that expertly breaks down how voting and awards work.
      Only thing I'll dispute is the likelihood of an MVP in the modern era not also making 1st team is nearly impossible. Russell won all of his mvps over Wilt due to the Celtics being the best team in the league and no ther reason. Players actually voted for mvp and I think it's safe to say that players definitely shouldn't be voting for any awards...especially pre-internet and access to footage and stats.

      "It wasn't a scandal but he was robbed"... same as "it wasn't a hurricane, but the storm destroyed the town"...
      1 HE WAS NOT ROBBED: LBJ was a serious contender for DPOY, Marc was too, and other were too (Ibaka, Noah, Duncan, Allen).
      And guess what? There is no defensive stats where LBJ was the best, and as the video showed, Marc was better than him in most of them. Plus a votation was made to choose, and Gasol win... and LBJ was not as close as the video pictures: yes, he was second in voting, but taking into account the points of votations (where the voters rank 3 players, and the most higher a player is ranked from one voter, the more point he gain for the overall ranking) LBJ (149 pts) was closer to the spots from 3 (Ibaka, 122pts) to 7 (Larry Sanders, 90 pts) than he was to Gasol at 1st (212 pts).
      2 the great season and the lack of DPOY are not related, having a great overall years doesn't grant someone any awards he want to win.
      For the great season overall the award was the MVP, and James won and deserve it, as it deserved to be in the 1st All NBA and All defensive 1st team because for most he was the best player TO PUT AS SMALL FOWARD, but nothing else was granted for DPOY, since many big mens were there too.
      And personally i think him winning MVP but not DPOY was quite logic... some good defensive highliths and the versatility doesn't make you the best defender of the league, and for both Miami and James the real stregth was the offence.

      @jake8748 8 месяцев назад +2

      @alessiodaniotti264 no Gasol was a centre. He was DPoTY which means the best individual player in the league that season. So how does it make sense that he wasn't the best centre in defence that season? If he's a better centre then all the others, he is first team all def. If he's 2nd team that means another centre was better defensively than him that year.
      The only thing that makes this happen was having different voters for different awards. Different voters prioritise different metrics for what they think. DPoTY being a media award meant it went to the best story for the season (so the grizzlies that season and Marc was the best individual for that team). When it came to those actually involved in the game they gave the awards to the ones who gave them most trouble or required plans around them etc.

Kawhi was a raw kid scoring only 14 pts a game. At the same time, Bosh was 29, Lebron 29 and Wade 31 so Heats definitely were in a better shape.

      Choke in the 2014 finals? You have to be in an alternate reality to think that. You might be the FIRST person I've ever seen say that the 2014 loss was on Bron and I've talked to a shit ton of Bron haters. You do realize, in that series out of 5 games, Lebron lead in scoring in 4 of those games and avged 28/7/4 on 57% FG and 51% from 3. He was also shooting 80% from the foul line that series and played absolutely spectacular defense on Ginobili, Parker, and even sometimes Duncan. Wade and Bosh both played terrible that series and the Spurs hit an insane 47% of the threes they took (highest in NBA history btw). I remember after the finals even Skip Bayless couldn't blame Lebron for his performance during those finals so you might actually be a bigger Bron hater than Skip Bayless. @@TellenJones

    HOT TAKE: The reason its a voting system is so the person who gets the most votes wins. To suggest that someone getting 120/121 votes is a robbery is ridiculous. Being a unanimous MVP doesnt actually mean anything. If you want to remove the votes and just give it to the person with the best stats you remove the entire human element from the MVP race. Youre clowning a professional who had a vote and wasn't afraid to use his vote to vote for who he thought had a bigger impact. Lebron was on a stacked ass Miami team with DWade and Bosh. Carmelo had Tyson chandler as his second best and was second in the East. He deserved at least 1 first place vote. Not everyone is going to agree and we saw just this year the best player doesn't always win the MVP, thats just not how it works. This video was a waste of time.

Even the late David Stern.😂 From Day 1.. they just let him grew to be the player he can be. While with LeBron.. Day 1, the pressure was there & everyone just can’t wait for him to fail. Everyone is salivating and ready to attack him for any weakness that he might show. Despite that tho, proud of him that he was still able to exceed all expectations. 😊

    what are you talking about ?
    lebron winning DPOY would've been the greatest travesty ever.
    he was never even a good defender.
    we all know what he COULD do in theory (guarding 4 positions etc), but he never did because he was never engaged on that end and he always shied away from contact.
    guarding rondo that one playoff series and fronting pau gasol that other time made him a defensive legend when in truth the best he ever was on that end was merely competent and that was only in his miami years.

      He is talking about the 2012-13 season in Miami, he could guard 1-5 and he had the athleticism and the intensity to do it and he did, he was playing as a 4 and guarding 7 footers, like, a lot of his blocks those years were against bigs, if you didn't knew, the video talks about just 2012-13, not his whole career brother

      LeBron leaves a lot on the table, there have been several times he was less than one point from winning the scoring title and just didn’t care. could've been the oldest player to ever win a scoring title and 2 years ago and just didn't even play the one last game to simply qualify (minimum games) for the award. Genuinely think he takes pride in not being a high volume scorer.

    He didn't get robbed of DPOY. He was elite but not at a clear DPOY level. Gasol, Duncan, Ibaka and Noah all had better defensive numbers that year than LeBron.

      Gasol Duncan ibaka and Noah at one point in time were all guarded effectively by lebron that year you know who else was… Derrick rose, Westbrook & John wall. Gasol Duncan ibaka and Noah protected the rim and guarded the bigs. Lebron that year protected the rim guarded the bigs and guarded the best guards as well AND did it in crunch time. That was the difference that year as to why he easily could’ve/should’ve won DPOY that year. He guarded every position at as high a level or higher than anyone else in the nba that year. Not to mention he didn’t have Tony Allen/Conley, Kawhi etc (1st, 2nd team or 3rd team All defensive teammates)

    Ppl on purpose not to mention the opponents
    MJ played against, in that era Danny Ainge, Dennis Johnson, Jeff Hornacek, Mark Price…were stars.
    Players were averagely more skinny, smaller, slower, only a few can jump high or shoot 3’s, no big man can dribble, no eurosteps, no shammgod. They played brute, but no skills. Hand check yes, but no zone defense, to which Kobe said “I don’t care if yo hand check with 3 hands” “the zone I think cripples some of the top scorers”
    When prime MJ left the bulls in 93’ the went from 57 wins to 55, when prime LeBron left cavaliers in 10’ they went 62 wins to 19.
    And MJ fans always lie about MJ stuff, for example "his vertical jump is 48 inches" and "his body fat ratio is 3%" If those were true, LeBron & Carter would have a 50 inch vertical jump and Helmut Strebl would have -3% body fat ratio.

    To be fair to Washburn his reasoning isn't without merit. It's the "most valuable player" award, not "best player" award. So theoretically someone who is not quite as good individually in a vacuum could still win based on relative importance to his team. That being said, even by this definition it still should have been LeBron James so he ultimately voted for the wrong guy in the end anyways.

    This whole premise is funny because the media LOVES lebron and has been claiming he’s the goat before he even won a chip. If the media won’t even give an award to lebron then he definitely doesn’t deserve it. And the one person who voted for melo is very justified. The knicks were the 2 seed and melo was pretty much carrying them, while lebron had a SUPERTEAM. You’re obviously more VALUABLE if you have less help on your team.

    Gasol was definitely the best defender in 2013. A far better rim protector and post defender than James. He anchored a defense 5.6 points better than league average, while the heat were only 2.2 better. So gasol got robbed of first team all defense. James didn’t get robbed of any award. The idea that one is using people’s voting in another category to try and say people voting got something wrong is utterly absurd.
