Overall Style/First Impressions:
I have the D2 steel medium forest green model, and my first impression of the Archaeo is that it is slim, lightweight, and shaped like it won the land speed record at the Bonneville salt flats. With its aerodynamic blade shape, thoughtful design touches, and unique handle ergonomics this knife easily stands apart from the pack. This is a knife that will feel right at home the moment you pick it up, and will surely find a way into the top of your EDC rotation. If this is your only knife, I would have no problem recommending this one.
Blade Design:
The Archaeo features a high flat grind. The Wharncliffe shape excels at cutting and slicing tasks. That is what I use my knives for primarily. Opening packages, opening packages, and even on occasion, I will open a package or two. When I’m not at work I use my knives to cut ropes, paracord, and any other general cutting task that presents itself, no matter how minor. No cutting is too task is too small an excuse to whip the blade out, amirite?
The blade has subtle jimping on the aft section of the blade spine. It’s low profile and smooth enough that it doesn’t dig into your skin. The blade also features a knockout style thumb slot for opening. Admittedly it may just be my fat greasy thumb, but it’s not that easy to open the knife with.
The Artisan Cutlery logo is small and placed in a tasteful location, as not to detract from the overall beauty of the blade. On the backside, you will find the model number (even though it says a serial number, Dylan assured me it’s really just the model number), Dylan Mallery’s name, and his logo underneath. As well as the origin of manufacture, in this case, China.
The blade on this model is made up of D2 steel. Though there are options all the way up to M390 steel for an additional cost. This is solid general-purpose steel that is commonly found in the $25-$75 price range. It’s tool steel, and it’s known for its ability to keep an edge. In my experience it is one of the tougher steels to sharpen, but not so much that I wouldn’t buy a knife because of it. Typically it will just add 10 minutes to my sharpening job overall. I use the KME sharpening system if you’re wondering.
Handle Features & Ergonomics:
The ergonomics of the G-10 Archaeo is easily one of my favorite things. It really lends itself well to precision work. I feel as if I am holding a dagger or even a letter opener. It really makes you rethink handle design, and what actually feels comfortable. Typically I will opt for a large handle because it feels better in my large hands, but man this handle just adds to the feeling that you’re holding a precise instrument.
My only slight issue is personal in nature as my ring finger does ride on the aft raised section a bit, so if you have small to medium-sized hands I think it would feel even better for you. Dylan did tell me it was designed for people with medium-sized hands in mind. I still like the way it feels overall though.
The deployment of the blade is handled via a flipper. The detent is a high-pressure detent. Deploying the knife takes a bit of pressure, but when it does deploy, it fires out with authority. This is also due in part to the ceramic bearings the blade rides on, which is a nice touch. I have had no issue with misfiring after about 3 weeks of daily carry.
I really like pushing in the liner lock to close the knife. It’s actually one of those knives you just kind of whip out to open and close when you’re bored. I can really get my meaty thumb in there. There’s no hard edge or pain when pushing down on it. It’s got a bit of travel from center to left, so it feels springy in a good way. It gives you obvious feedback when the blade is ready to close. When it does close, the flipper acts as a safety guard so your thumb isn’t in the way while closing the blade.
**Correction to video, the MSRP is $76, not $66. The $66 was for the mini version.

Right on Rusty, thanks so much for subbing!
I’d buy this knife! Lol, at the record player turning and the guy. I like long handle. I love assisted openers! Do you have any easy sharpening vids (I’ll go look). I’m bad at it!
I don't have any sharpening stones or anything like that. But I do have sharpening systems, the KME and Ken Onion Work Sharp. The Work Sharp is easy AF, and only $120 bucks. I will be doing a comparison video in the near future!
That's awesome you were able to meet Dylan! He designs some sweet blades and the archeo is no exception. Sweet action and a great stabby blade, but I had to loctite the pivot as well. Great video!
Mad props to your video bruh. Engaging as all hell too. Subscribed. I love all the CJRB and Artisan blades. Ps, I never waste my time giving props, so again, well done

Awesome brother, welcome aboard! lol meathooks 😁😀😎
I want this
D2 and m390 should be avoided unless they have a good heat treatment because the cost to performance is not worth it at the cost they are charging for those steels. Check out channels like outpost76, supersteel Steve and hilltop knives channels. They have testing on all steels. With that said this may be a fine knife even if it's expensive for the poor performance you are getting for d2. It's a nice shape. But those two steels are poorly heat treated.
noted. thanks for your help I'll check those channels out!
So if that's the case with D2 and M390, who's to say that all the other metals coming out of China such as 8Cr14MoV, the 400 series, 154CM....etc. aren't heat treated properly? When purchasing budget ranged knives, don't expect that any of the metals you are getting are quality, so it's basically a crap shoot. I''ll take my chances on a mid-range metal such as D2 or M390 rather than the lower end metals. I'm certainly not going to fork out a few hundred clams to get a high end pocket knife that I'm going to use as an everydayer. JMO.
@@therealsparkman get 14C28N then. Usually affordable and it's done good from most companies and some do it exceptionally well. Where as m390 and d2 are done poorly from 95% of manufacturers.
Why oh why, TB12? He is a bum. 😆
