  • San Angelo, Texas is the only city left in Texas who still holds a local election to select their Chief of Police every four years. Unfortunately, this often creates division within the police department and community, not to mention the pettiness that comes along with small town election campaigns. The question the becomes; Why are we still doing this?

The police should be elected by and answer directly to the citizens that they serve. They don't serve the city, or the state, or the county. They serve the people. The people should have complete control over who is enforcing the law in their communities.

By being intentional about who we elect as mayor and city council we can do just that. Elect people who will take the right steps to appoint tge right agency heads.

…and all complaints need to be reviewed by a completely independent citizen board, members of which cannot have any direct ties to current or former law enforcement personnel, with full disciplinary authority up to an including termination, as well as recommending prosecution and revocation of law enforcement credentials. Internal affairs is a joke, and as is shown in multiple videos on this platform, appointed chiefs DO kowtow to their masters on the council, so some solution is in order.

He’s 100% correct. If you don’t like the way the police department is operating where you live, it’s time to look at your elected officials. They are the ones running the show and if you don’t like what they’re doing, elect someone else to replace them.
