I need to check out the Balti Triangle! Looks fantastic!
Food like this is an art. You can never copy someones art and make it as beautiful. I’ve tried many times to make BIR curries and Baltis but can never get it as good as in the authentic takeaways and restaurants. But seeing this delicious food I don’t think I’d want to perfect the ideal BIR curry because that will remove all the mystery of how this beautiful food is made. So I’d rather be a restaurant customer rather than a maker. This beautiful food deserves a lot more than 10/10.
Personally I take great pride in being the “maker” and it makes me happy knowing the people I am making it for are about to have there minds blown ✌️
Looks Amazing Love Lime Pickle An amazing Meal start to finish
😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
I was there last week lee it’s my regular, the only proper balti in the world mate
Chicken tikka masala is not an authentic Indian dish. It was created by a British Asian chef for the British
True. You would not find any restaurant menu items in an Indian household. I get a laugh when I go to an Indian restaurant and read some of the item names. I'm Indian and never ever heard of such things.
Balti made in Birmingham because chefs wanted a lighter, healthier curry ! … so what happened to Goa, Lucknow, Bengal and lots of other real curry hotspots? I may as well stick to Preston if I want ‘Authentic’
Ooooooooh 3 am here watching this. I could just eat that right now. 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋 we will have to do an India when you come over to Manchester Lee. Hungry again now ! 🚗🚗💨💨
Looking forward to you two getting together again
Definitely. I don't think we have done an Indian. 🎥🕶️🎬🍺🍺🍺
Hi Geoff, Hope you are recovering from your hip and running around, lol. Wondered what you were doing.
Come Back soon Geoff …. Theres Chang with your name on it 🙏
@@TheMacMaster no you have done Chinese buffet 👍
Looked off the charts, but shouldn't the pickles be free with those poppadoms?
I go to Shababs with my Dad and Brother once a month and it’s our Tradition we call it Curry Klub with a Capital K😂 it’s definitely hands down the best Balti in Birmingham dare I say the UK. The Food is out of this world and I’m glad that you enjoyed it!
Good to have your recommendation too👍 It does look good.
Went to Santa Pod from Devon for a couple of days a while back..
(Premier Inn Beafeater breakfast was poop there in Wellingborough..stone cold hard fried eggs & cold rubber shrooms🤢..Great in Chesterfield though 😊..)
Had I seen this vid 1st I would have done a overnight detour on the way back 😋
Not the balti triangle, but while filming scenes for Mission Impossible 7 Tom Cruise visited Asha's Indian restaurant in Birmingham and liked the chicken tikka masala so much than he ordered a second one immediately afterwards. You'd struggle to find a lousy curry anywhere in Birmingham, whether eating in or out. Portions are hugely generous; any restaurant you go to will be more than happy to package up your leftovers for you take away. A lot of places are able to keep their prices low as they're unlicensed, but you're welcome to take your own alcoholic drinks. The triangle may not be the most glamorous place in the world, but you are pretty much guaranteed a good meal. But dude. What's with the fork? You eat a balti by scooping it up with your bread. I have never seen anyone eat a balti with a fork. 🤔
Lived in Birmingham between 1991 and 1996, attended university there. Back then you could get a 🐔 spinach balti, naan bread and a pint for a fiver with the student discount. Frequented the restaurants along Bristol Road in Selly Oak near the uni, recall the Dilshad and Khan's. Now living in Florida, the only nearby place is called Fifth Element in Daytona but is pretty expensive so quite often make my own which I have gotten quite good at! Thanks for your videos, could murder a proper british curry right now!
@mark did that too
That s not a naan that's a floor mat
Come on Birmingham!!👍
It's a Brum ting
Lee you should try an Indian mix grill. Very popular in the Black Country region of the West Midlands. Red Lion in West Brom, Soho Tavern or The Railway in Oldbury 👍🏽
Looks absolutely Delicious
wow - interesing LEE thanks for going there for us.....10/10
I was gonna pop over to Brum today if I'd known you'd be over!
You can’t beat a good fish and chip supper on a Friday and a good roast on a Sunday, the rest of the week you can’t beat a good curry 😂
Looks delicious & the size of that naan bread 😲🫓 . Wow how much 🤑
Shababs is the best curry house there by a long way
The biggest nan bread ever ,the currys's looked very tasty can't get over the nan wow.8.9/10.
lee they have a lot of late night women of the night customers in that area.. and other underisables
undesirables ???
@@johnmacdonald3767 druggies
That's no where near real 'Indian' cuisine
Can someone please tell me what is typically used when a dish is described as "MEAT" My local did that and it turned out to be Alsatian 🤮🤮🤮
One of the best lamb Baltis I’ve ever had here at Shababs!!!! 👍🏼
No doubt followed by the ring of fire the next day. Oh and don't mention the cricket to our Indian friends 😜😜👍
You can't beat poppy dommys and the pickles. The onion rings are an interesting twist. The only problem for me was the naan was a tad on the small side...lols. Looked good Lee 👍 gets a 10 from moi. 💛
Chargrilled taste because uts cooked in the bakti dish you eat from
Dude you take ur friend to witherspoon when it's for 2 but when your alone ur at 5 star places come on
I’ve heard they do top notch curry’s in Bradford, that
Looked well good Lee.. Keep rolling dude 👍 Mickey
Thanks for the invite Lee 🤣🤣 About 7 miles from me
Looks nice but the menu on the table and the dustbins lids would put me of .
That naan bread is something else. Always love a good curry.
you can`t beat a Brummie Balti, welcome to Brum our kid
i`ve been going to a place called Azims on Lozells Road North birmingham since the mid 80`s and it`s still superb😋
Totally agree about Azims
Great video mate and welcome to Brum. If I known you were down my way I would have come for a pint with you lol. That looked amazing food and even though I’ve been through the Balti Triangle in Sparkbrook many a time but never actually eaten at Shababs. I hope to go here very soon though. When you’re next down here again, you should try our local Balti House called Shabar which is in the Sheldon area of Brum. Been going regularly since it opened back in 1991 and it’s the only restaurant I’ve been to where I’ve never had a bad meal. Very very similar to Shababs with equal sized portions and they also do table naans.
I completely agree with you with the chargrilled taste which is why I always ask for all my different curry’s to come as a Balti, as the food isn’t transferred to a plate so keeps the flavour better.
I go for all types like Masala, Madras, vindaloo, Phall, Jalfrezi etc but my favourite at the moment is the Lamb Pathia Balti. Mouthwatering. I also love keema rice. Strange that they don’t do onion bhaji’s but those rings looked nice anyway. My only very minor gripe with this is the naan looks a bit dry. I like a bit of oil/butter on top but that’s just me being picky. I’ll go 9.8/10. Thanks for review mate.
It looks absolutely fantastic and a 10 for me, too. I was wondering, Lee, just how many carbohydrates are in that huge piece of Naan bread. Haha!
Probably stays open that late/early for those infamous taxi drivers.
Now, does that match Darren John's favourite City spice in London? not sure about that... 🤔
Sure does. :0) Birmingham itself blows London away for Curry Houses. Even if you don't go to this one, you should visit Birmingham if you love Curries.
Best food on the planet, a good curry.👍
That looked phenomenal! Watching this vid made me so hungry, lol! If that was near me with those 6am opening hours, I'd be ordering takeaways from there several times a week!
Yummy. Looks fabulous.
at least your not at spoons ;)
Get well Dave from the hairy bikers
That all looked delicious in fact i think those onion rings were better than bhajis and that naan bread never seen one that size, myself would not be able to eat all that, so taking some home is a great idea.
Thanks Steven. ❤️
Looks absolutely banging, especially that bread👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻ordered a Shababs balti bowl last week, cant wait to start cooking with it👍🏻
That looked a cracking meal Lee, I'm surprised you didn't lick the bowl, that's an easy 10 and reasonably priced too. You get what you pay for, quality.🤤🤤🤤
Looks greasy, and probably Halal meat, which is a big no no for me. Good portions though, as is the price 🤣
How come hun?
Never seen a indian that isn't halal
You went through some food there 😅
Great video the currys look amazing, cooked in there own balti dish too 😋
I lived around Birmingham for many years before moving to Notts 2 years ago. We used to go to Ladypool Road and Stoney Lane regularly back in the day but it became something of a tourist trap. There were still some good balti houses but a lot of crap ones opened too. There were a lot of dodgy practices as well. I did notice that you were royally overcharged at Shabab, which used to be a common complaint in the area. For instance the curries you were charged £11 each but on the menu they were £8.99. Onion rings £3 v £2.25. Table naan £8 v £6.99. Pilau rice £3.50 v £2.99. What was that all about?
While the food looks good, it's not authentic. Locals now head for real Indian food at the Desi Pubs which are usually old boozers taken over and converted to serve proper Indian curries as well as good beer. If you want to try a great curry, the best of them is the New Soho Tavern, 407 Park Road, Birmingham B18 5SR. Try their sizzling mixed grill, chicken tikka masala and fresh naan. You don't get ripped off for the extras either. (The next best is the Vine, Roebuck Street, West Bromwich but don't go there on a match day!)
I noticed that too, the meñu prices were lower than the prices on macs receipt!!!
It's ironic cuz in his Xmas market vid he never stopped complaining about being ripped off!!!
I really only want a veg balti and a nan. I used to go to the vine on match day!! Great memories
@@chriscoughlan5221 The New Soho Tavern gets rammed on matchdays too, as I once discovered. It's because it's by the tram stop. I've been to the vine a couple of times recently and their prices have crept up, although not as much as that Shabab. New Soho is still very reasonably priced, great portions, and definitely the best curry!
@@hacendado3840 I might be tempted to give the new Soho tavern a visit when I'm in Brum during Xmas. What's the best time to go?
Shababs is my go-to place whenever I'm around Ladypool Road. I've been there numerous times and they never disappointed me with the food I ate there
Sorry for saying this.but looked very oily/greasy!
Agree , it didn’t look all that 👎🏻
You do realise that baltis are cooked over high heat meaning it needs oil - the oil actually evaporates while it ignites creating flame to produce a smoky flavour and caramelising the gravy.
Watch how they actually make a proper balti
Wow looked great! A table naan. Did they let you take everything away?
OMG that would feed me for a month, look at the size of that naan.
First time ever I’ve been scared for you, and that was just the pickle tray! Food looks amazing!
Chicken Tikka Masala is my go to dish as well. I discovered it in England, and now I make pretty mean one myself. I do love Indian food myself, and I'm going to a "fine Indian" place myself on the 26th.
Just a correction. The most eaten dishes in UK are Roast lunch, fish and chips, full English breakfast, Shepard's pie, bangers and mash, ploughman's lunch, Lancashire hotpot. Curry doesn't feature
Toad in the hole? Steak and ale pie? And every Brit loves a good Indian dinner
I love Shepherds pie too, never heard of shepards
@@kevinbrewis6014 ha ha misspelled thanks for pointing it out
Lee I would have gave that a 7 wasn't impressed....no onion bagees sorry but find that strange them onion rings Wer basically tempura rings and as for the flavours just spices if u put enough in any1 could make this and put as much chicken in as ya want really wat Iam saying is any1 could make this .... but try making fish and chips and mushy peas without all them spices....now that's a skill
i go to a curry house to eat curry and the supermarket to eat bread!
Lee your in my city and you know I always tell you how it is. The place to go was Popular Balti. Sadly I heard the old man passed away and the business is either no longer there or changed hands. Their keema Balti was the one. Shababs I do know one of the sons he actually went to my uni, their food is famous but not authentic Indian food.
That's not a Naan, it's a Duvet 😂
When I left home to go to University it was a bit of a culture shock to discover that Baltis were impossible to find outside Brum, just bog standard curries. That was a while ago and they later became all the rage so now you can find them, or a version of them at least, all over the UK. But no-one does them like Brum.
From the midlands and must say it’s hard to find a proper balti or decent Indian restaurant compared to the 80s and 90s….. Learn to make your own…. Cheaper and better….
I didnt know the Balti triangle was still a thing? Last time i was there i was still using a Macintosh Classic but i think it was just called a Macintosh. I later bought a coat and used PCs....
There's only about three Balti restaurants in the area now. It's mostly burgers, fried chicken, pizzas and steak houses.
Birmingham? Best Indian curry? Not a chance! Been there, tried it and disappointed. The one on the ground floor of Jurys Inn was mediocre with a ludicrous price tag. Tried curries in London, Birmingham, Yorkshire, Swindon, Lincolnshire and even Johannesburg but none compare favourably with Glasgow and West of Scotland curries! The absolute best has to be the Sanam Tandoori in Falkirk (third generation of the same family after 40+ years) and that's comparing with the "best" England and South Africa have to offer.
Not Shababs again? It was shut down for being disgustingly dirty a few years ago.
Lee must've been on the loo all day after all this lol
I haven't been here in many years, but fantastic food and the price is a complete bargain!
So what time did you have seconds lol
Looked Fantastic Lee. Will defo be trying the place. 💯👌🇬🇧🌍
A no no for me is haveing the menu in the table not really nice to look at
Load of food there, would have fed 4 people. Big bowls of curry and giant naan bread. Quality and quantity. Prices were good. For me it is a solid 10/10.
I'm not that into Indian curry but it did look nice..... prefer Chinese curries myself Lee 😊
Bet you were full up after that lot 😁❤️x
Looks awesome. I tried Peshawar naan with the last Indian takeaway I had and the coconut was the perfect foil for the spices in the jalfrezi. Unfortunately I don’t live anywhere close to this place but trying the balti triangle has just gone into my bucket list.
I always find pinepple pilau compliments a hot curry really well, with that sweet juiciness working really well with the spiciness of a Madras or a Vindaloo!
Hiya bud, Great channel. I've a topical question for you.
Are you finding that curry houses are only serving / giving us our meat choice in our chosen sauce ?
ie, no other ingredients in the dishes.
I'm finding more and more. That curries are just meat in the sauce.
It's like going for a Sunday roast dinner...and the veg is missing.
It's exactly the same thing.
I have brought it to t my local Indians attention a few times.
Chicken Jhalfrezi, no bell peppers, no onions, no chilli's, no fresh coriander...can't help but feel that we are getting short changed....
I'd be raging if I got anything else other than prime chicken breast in an Indian curry!!!
The Balti looked severely oily - I hate that!!
A true balti was always cooked using chicken thighs.
You do realise that baltis are cooked over high heat meaning it needs oil - the oil actually evaporates while it ignites creating flame to produce a smoky flavour and caramelising the gravy.
Watch how they actually make a proper balti
Tikka masala from Glasgow
Great review. I love curries myself and being asian always believe that home made curries are the best as mother's always cook them better and feel more authentic. It use to be a huge craze going for a curry, but nowadays with prices on the increase, people are going more towards burgers, kebabs, fish and chips, and even coffee shops. P.S. as you were on Ladypool road there was a shop further up called Khan's fish bar which does the best lamb curry and chips in Birmingham. Hope to see more curry reviews in the future, loving the content.
Should have asked for a bigger naan looked really good
Thanks for taking us there Lee that looks absolutely stunning worth its weight in gold that's 11 out 10 the best Indian I've seen.
I put to go here on your last video, I didn't think you would end up going but I'm so glad you did, I think Darren should go with you next time you go, see what he thinks about it. Great video by the way !
Thanks Matt. 👍🏼👍🏼
Seriously Lee? You lived in the U.S. for years, and you're trying to claim that U.K. Indian food is more "famous" than fish and chips? The other one's got bells on it.
Course it is son
look it up more Indian food is sold each year than fish an chips fact
@@davidgomm6043 I see you are defying the odds, and bizarrely getting even thicker as the months pass. Lee said curry was a more "famous" English dish than fish and chips, not more a "popular" dish. He's wrong, and so are you.
PS: Use of the word "fact" [even in an incomprehensible run-on sentence] denotes profound stupidity, not to mention intellectual inadequacy.
it more popular than fish and chips If i said famous i meant popular, an it has been for over 20 years check the stats out
@@davidgomm6043 Not exactly, but close; you interpreted Lee's word "famous" as meaning popular [ie, more sold], which is incorrect. Nevertheless, glad you realised your error. Have a nice day. PS: I love a good curry.
if you are near birmingham then you really need to go to Ivans fish and chip shop in Cradley Heath!! they are the very best and have been there for 65 years, the fish is fresh and the whole shop is a union jack on the outside, you can also eat in there and buy fresh fish and potatoes from there !!
Presumably they don't sell alcohol? Can you take your own?
Love a good curry. Looked absolutely yummy 😋
10/10
I live in Aberdeen Scotland and you my name is Angela
I am always bothered by the Indian restaurant model of nickel and dime charging for all the sides and accompaniments.
Living in the US, I am particularly struck by the use of the same model here. Compared to a Mexican restaurant with endless tortilla chips and soft drinks, rice and beans included as sides, I feel the Indian restaurants have become a poor value proposition.
Your meal for £42 was fairly generous for one but it wouldn’t feed two.
2 meat filled curries, a huge Naan bread and a portion of rice wouldnt feed 2 people? No wonder America has issues 🤷♂
@@jamiemorgan6682 You may be correct. It could be just me. I am actually English living in US and note that we English are the fattest in Europe. That combined with the huge meals we eat in America has probably done me in. However, it didn’t seem like much chicken was left to take home. He will have to be content with the £8 hunk of nan.
You should try Kathmandu in clay cross…. It’s beaut
Great vlog again Lee, Chicken tikka masala is for girls lol, but I do love a Balti, the best one I ever had was with lamb, absolutely full of flavour, was wondering if anyone out as couples has ordered 4 nan's by mistake 😂 but what a place, it's a 10 all day long
Lol. Yeah Tikka Massala its not Man Food. 😂
that really does look the 'dogs boll'....it certainly looks one of the best curries you have shown and great vlog as always xx

Wow .. I live in Sydney , have done for over 30 yrs but do travel back to Brum on family visits on a yearly basis . I always make a bee line for The Rajpoot in Cotteridge or Akrams in Selly Park where I indulge in that Brummie classic Balti curry . There’s nothing comes close in Australia , not even in the same league as what can be got in Brum . It’s 9pm here in Sydney , I’m going to bed hungry and very homesick , I hope you are pleased with yourself Lee 😀😀. Thanks for a great review , also have a good and safe flight over here 👍.
