Perfect! Never tire of revisiting Don't Look Now. Or Rebecca for that matter. And never knew about the Mrs. Danvers nod! Oh man, I have to go watch The Wrong Trousers again right now!
Good list and based on the trailer, I wouldn't have thought that the remake of My Cousin Rachel could approach the original. But after Kermode's review I may give it a look.
Though not a Hitchcock film or a Hollywood blockbuster I personally think the 1979 TV version of Rebecca starring Jeremy Brett and Joanna David is far better . It's closer to the novel and Jeremy Bretts's portrayal of Maxim is to me more convincing and brooding than Oliviers anyday .Yet this TV version is so often overlooked and overshadowed by the "big names" associated with the film . The 1979 version is also more typically " English" in its feel while as the Hitchcock version seemed a made for America portrayal of England . I also find the way Joan Fontaine plays the girl to be far more simpering and shy that the novel shows her to be . However the Hitchcock film was made in a very different era which of course can explain some of the differences.
A pretty good list, though in my opinion Hitchcock's 'Jamaica Inn' is an absolute shambles, and the shocking twist at the end of the novel was totally written out in the film, thanks to Laughton's ego. For my money I would place 'Frenchman's Creek' in 5th place: it's campy, over-the-top technicolour is a riotous treat and Joan Fontaine never looked more radiant surrounded by a fantastic supporting cast.
Yeah, Daphne du Maurier didn't at all like Olivia de Haviland as Rachel, or Hitchcock's take on Jamaica Inn which she thought had been degraded to a 'comedy'; but she did rate 'Rebecca' movie and thought that Judith Anderson as Mrs Danvers had got it just right; (du Maurier took the character from a real-life housekeeper she'd encountered as a child, who scared the living shit out of her....).
daphne du maurier is an EXCEPTIONAL author, i am obsessed with her
Bravo ! If Don´t Look Now hadn´t been number one I would have wept. An absolute masterpiece.
um....Spoiler!.....
Just kidding....I knew it was gonna be number one ha. Fantastic film!
:)
Don't look now is just wonderful! Everything from the editing to the incredible love-making scene, gahh film just doesn't get any better!

Don't look now is a masterpiece. I visited the church where it was filmed in Venice
I adore Don't Look Now, I wish I could see that on the big screen.
The newer version of My Cousin Rachel is really brilliant.

Great List!
I really like Don't look now. The editing in that film is groundbreaking.
My cousin Rachel is amazingly good. I don't like costume dramas, but wow. Gripping isn't the word.

The Wrong Trousers really terrified me as a child - and now next time I see it it will be 10 times worse!
I saw this on Netflix

Yes, and Daphne du Maurier didn't like Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn apart from the wrecking scene.
Btw. Never seen don't look now. Must rectify that Immediately. :-)

That clip in the beginning was extremely cringe-inducing.
asderc1 Hopefully you're right. We all remember the absolutely awful soundtrack Gangs of New York, and this felt very similar.
What’s all this “check out...”!! Why is Kermode talking American? Childish!
