I've recently found that the tip type and especially condition of the tip has an enormous effect on shot performance, but I haven't found any instructional videos on this topic. I just thought my aim was bad until a professional showed me that my cue tip was flattened out of shape. She shaped and scuffed it for me and the result was dead-straight cue ball travel. Yea - turns out the thing that strikes the cue ball is incredibly important for accuracy and control, but you hardly ever see it mentioned.

I feel form is a huge factor as well that I was surprised wasn’t really discussed. I was practicing at a hall and someone came to be helpful explaining why my difficulty with straight shots (more so range shots in general) had more to do with the fact my elbow would be cocked out to the side. Practicing in front of a a window/mirror helped a lot to realize I wasn’t swinging my arm in a perfect pendulum.

This is a great little trick to add to your arsenal! Thanks. Also, for those wanting to know, if you're hitting "center", put scotch tape over the tip of your cue, and try shooting longer shots (stun) and you will notice RIGHT AWAY if you have ANY spin, cuz you will miscue EVERYTIME with ANY kind of spin. You can do it with an unchalked cue, as well, but this avoids possibly damaging your tip.

I will try the light trick. Up til now, my method was putting my tip at the base of the CB, since I know the CB rests on its middle. Then I bring the cue tip straight up to the height I need. Of course, if I'm attempting a follow shot, the light will be closer to my tip's destination!

  • @joerobertson7887

The light trick is okay IF the cue ball is in the center of the table. I've heard that if you cue super low you can use the cue ball's point of contact on the table which should be the exact center of the cue ball. I've tried this and it works fairly well. Nothing works perfectly....except a couple million practice shots.

Lately I've been practicing stroking the cue stick with a slight seesaw action in the vertical plane before taking the shot. When watching the motion of the cue stick while doing this, you may be able to determine if you are seesawing in a vertical plane (or are not, or are wobbling all over) and make some correction to your elbow position until it appears that you have achieved motion confined to a vertical plane. Then shoot.

I've been doing a LOT of stroke drills lately. Especially the "Mighty X". Best drills you can do IMO.
I just tried that last shot.
On my 2nd try I got it to come back very close to the center diamond!
Much closer than you js 😉🙃.
Now to work on the REST of my game lol.

This wouldn’t work in any other orientation. The reason it worked in this video, the light on top of the table happened to also be going parallel to the shot direction.
I LOVE all your videos. You are one of the very few people on RUclips that actually provide some real insight. I just started watching and found all your videos to be well put together, informative and professional. This is the only video I am not sure about.

Your head position can really throw you off. I had a session with Charlie Bryant and I said I am looking at the center of the cue ball. He said you are 1/16 th of an inch off to the left. So I shifted my head to the right a bit and that solved the problem.

Sharivari. I have to ask. I have been watching for a while and I noticed you have a ruler of some type around your table. I assume you use this to gauge banking systems more precisely. I'd love to know how it has worked for you and if you think they are worth looking in to and where you can find them.

When you hit the cue ball are you looking at the object ball or at the cue ball. It seems very difficult for me to hit the cue ball exactly in the middle if my focus is on the object ball. That's why I think I seem to miss straight in shots half the time. I have done some research on this and it seems some profesional pool players focus on the cue ball when they shoot and some on the object ball.I know you have to keep your eye on the ball , but which ball LOL??

  • @cueball5858

Sharivari - I watched a few videos where Earl Strickland was the commentator. Although he tends to mumble a lot he seems to advise everyone to put English on the cue ball on almost every shot. Says us amateurs should learn how to do this. I think Nick Varner also says he does this. I assume it's to counter any throw the cueball may impart on the object ball. I don't know if this is correct. It sounds more difficult than simply overcutting the object ball a tiny fraction in shots around the half ball mark to allow for the throw. Do you have any thoughts on this? Heard anything about it? Thanks.

hi can you help me with vision centre and head position problem?
my cue is online but my brain tells me that its not correct. my right eye is the dominant eye but i normally cue centre chin . i have to tilt my head alot to the left while cueing centre chin and it really feels uncomfortable but thats only when i can see straight line, however if i put the cue under my dominant eye right eye, i still have have to tilt my head to the left but its not as much but still feels uncomfortable. so without tilting my head i cannot see a straight line straight when down. how do i fix this ????
    tnx alot

... according to BCA (Billiard Congress of America) rules, to lose "on the Eight" a sink (pot) of the Eight and a scratch of the cue ball constitutes a loss...
