  • Draining and flushing the power steering fluid in my 2013 Mazda 3. First change in 10 years and 250,000 km. Overall pretty fast and easy.

    Great tutorial! Loved how you documented those little lessons that you learn while doing the job like breaking plastic clips and letting the fluid settle.

    3:09 To fill up the reservoir quicker, it's best to remove the black filter. Otherwise it's very slow to fill and you will most likely spill fluid all over the reservoir/engine bay

    Clean out the funnel with break clean it's nice and quick

    Great tutorial video! What is the diameter of the hose you used to drain the old fluid?

      It was just some old junk hose that I had laying around.
      I think that it was 3/4 inch internal diameter hose.

    Could you do this by just sucking out the old fluid in the reservoir, turning the wheel to get more old fluid pumped in the reservoir, and repeating until the system is empty? Then adding fresh fluid and repeat the turning of the wheel until full?

      Sort of, you would get a lot more mixing of fluid and might have to run through a lot more new fluid to achieve as complete a change.

      It's kind of wierd, but if more fluid are multi purpose it will reduce manufacturing requirements

    I have been using Prestone brand power steering fluid to top off my reservoir. Would that be a problem?

      I'm not really sure. Mazda recommends their own fluid to be used though, and since there isn't too much information on it I would probably just use the Mazda stuff. If it were a specific thing like 10W 30 then I would use whatever, but I don't really know what is in the Mazda fluid. That said if it has been working then it will probably keep going.

    I have watched many steering fluid flushes that all other brand owners/mechanics used the return line right beside. I don't why Mazda has to go under instead, even though the line is also running beside the upper reservoir with easy access!?

      it probably made sense to the engineers.

      The return line is under because the fluid has to flow back to the electric power steering pump which was mistakenly mentioned as the lower reservoir. It's not a reservoir but an electro-mechanical pump.

      @@kenjithomas Bottom line is that Mazda's design is more difficult to maintain/repair. I've just flushed my own Mazda 3 and my friend's Altima which was much easier to flush the fluid. Mazda doesn't like DIYers LOL!
      Plus, my Mazda's rear shock mounts broke for the 2nd time in 5 years😭
      Some Fords and Volvos share the same parts. Good luck!

      @@Loyee2000 I agree. Mazda's design is a bit complicated compared to other Japanese car manufacturers hahaha. Despite that, my Mazda Premacy (Mazda 5) never gave me headaches.

    After a repair of the power steering in my car, they filled with a cheap gray liquid. Do you think it will be better to add a good one?

      If it's the proper fluid and it's new I might just leave it. I don't think it would make a big difference. Again assuming it's the correct fluid type.

      Then I would consider it if you have the time, but for me personally I wouldn't drop what I'm doing to change out the fluid.

    Thanks for the tutorial, I have the same car except 2012. I've noticed my steering is not as smooth as it once was, 71,000 miles. Curious the best way to jack up the front of a Mazda 3 so you can turn the wheel, jack one side up and place jack stand, then go to other side? Or I was thinking using the OEM jack on one side with a jack stand, and my nice jack on other with another jack stand.

      Whatever is safe and sturdy.
      I would definately put a stand under it if you are using the jack that came with it. Those small Jack's arent always the most stable.

      there’s a jack point for the front that’s kind of hard to get to without a good low profile jack. slightly right of center there’s an 2”X embossed on the front crossmember. it’s roughly in line with the aft edge of the front tire. google image search for mazda 3 front jack point, might make more sense 😅
