I feel bad for the Neighbor. Some random lady calls her up and is very interested in her son's health, without an explanation. OP, you should have opened with how your mother said her son was ill and that you were just checking on him. It would still be weird, but at least the woman wouldn't feel as creeped out knowing her neighbor was lying.

It's one thing if a daughter of your neighbor that lives far away calls to inquire about your kid's health for some reason. It's weird, but once the call ends - you don't see the perceived weirdo anymore.
It's another thing if she told that her next door neighbor lied about her son having a deadly illness. It's also weird, but once the call ends you now know that you live next door to a weirdo, and neither of you are likely to move out in the near future.
To sum it up, both choices would've resulted in the neighbor not speaking to OP's mother for good measure. But direct one that you suggested would create much more animosity between the neighbors and, most importantly, more stress for the mother by getting her *directly* involved in the entire situation.
If I was in her shoes, I'd rather stay mostly ignorant and get mildly weirded out by a single phonecall, than get dragged into this family drama where unhinged mother lies about *my kid* having leukemia to get some shopping money from her daughter. No, thanks.
@@iamsatanjrWith a more direct info, the Mom can just not speak to her neighbor. She knows someone is saying her son is severely sick, and there are likely few options for who is saying that. Either option would end up with the neighbor not talking to OP's Mom, because she eventually stops anyway when she figures OP's Mom would be the one to say that.
Yeah kinda feel like she should have told her the reason for the call (she might have, but it was not conveyed really well in the post if so)

OP should have told the neighbor why she was asking about her son's health. The neighbor must have been really weirded out. Meanwhile, tell the relatives how mom tried to scam you

Yeah I'm not going to lie as somebody who battled with leukemia for a good amount of my childhood it literally pisses me off when people use the cancer card to try to get whatever they want and I'm not talking about somebody with cancer I'm talking about people that supposedly say oh I have a friend or a family member or a child that's dying of cancer I need free this and that immediately given to me or you need to give me money because that person I'm taking care of with cancer is my way of getting what I want when it's like so disgusting how far these people go to literally get whatever they want even if they have to fake take care of somebody with cancer are they pretend they have cancer as well That's what I always find upsetting about people like the mom in the story and I don't understand why the original poster like one minute had a spine and then the next minute felt bad just because some family members put them down for whatever reason the mom manage convinced those family members to feel bad for her even though all of a sudden and the update they don't which is really weird but okay neither way I'm just glad that the OP literally got that parasite he calls his mother out of his life and on top of that I don't understand why he felt bad in the first place like I said before it just kind of baffles me because I get it that your mom I get it you know you have all these family members breathing down your neck telling you you need to apologize but then it's so weird that like all of a sudden last minute they don't care about the mom it's just really weird
