Putting in her bank account info was extremely stupid. However lots of people aren’t very technologically literate and fall victim to scams like this, especially old people. Phishing scams don’t even require you to enter information sometimes, all you have to do is open a text or email and just click the link and it can automatically download malware onto your device. If a text or email looks suspicious don’t even open it, just delete it.

OP is NTA for wanting to see MiL getting punished by the law. I get the husband is attach to his mom despite not being close but he is being too emotional. The whole "should of been angry" toward the hacker mom and hacker boy is pointless. If MiL didn't hired that hacker, she would of hired someone else instead. • @m3galodon_22

How is it that all these MILs are horrid to their children's partners? My boyfriend's mom keeps asking him if I'm with him everytime he goes home, and is actually upset when I'm not there, she's even started telling me to call their home my home because I'm there so much and we get along so well. His father and I spend hours talking about everything and nothing, and even longer raving about cars and F1. My parents love my boyfriend. My mom and him are practically best friends, and when my dad comes over to visit me for work or when we call, more often than not, one of the first things he will ask me is if my boyfriend is there and if he can see/talk to him. I feel really bad for the partners who have been nothing but nice and kind, and get rewarded with horrendous in-laws

All it takes is creating a website or, even easier, a webhook, then you just copy paste the text and code from an official site, send it to someone that's either gullible or just not tech savvy and that's it. It doesn't take a genius, it doesn't even take a hacker to do it, infact, I'm pretty certain you yourself could do it if you'd pour like half an hour into figuring it out. It really IS that willy nilly, lol.

This is one of those situations where being right and being morally right. Your choice is sate your anger or have a healthy marriage.

Probably minor opinion here, but I would get the MIL a second chance to prove that she is truly sorry and ceased the toxic behavior.
Sure, what she did was a little extreme (although not extreme as other MILs from other stories in this channel), but if she is really regret what she did, I think it would be far happier for oneself's mental health to not hold grudge forever and give a second chance. Otherwise, it would just be another depressing case similar to countless other stories on the internet where even the least and smallest of bad behavior would put you on the black list of "Forever Evil People With No Chace For Redemption" for some on Twitter!

    • @plumreid
      @plumreid 6 месяцев назад +1

He only hit me one time and he's really sorry. I need to give him a second chance so we can live happily. The MIL was able to go to such an extreme because she was never held accountable for the smaller things she did. The OP does not have to be holding a grudge to allow the legal system to hold her MIL accountable for breaking the law. Being a doormat and allowing someone to get away with stealing 40,000 dollars from you in an attempt to prevent your marriage would be far worse on mental health.

Uh, none of this makes sense. She committed a non-violent crime, is most likely not a flight risk, and they're going to hold her indefinitely in prison until the trial? A trial that is apparently very speedy? Where does she live? Is it a country with only 100 people in it? Because there aren't that many places where a jail can accommodate her pre-trial and the legal system can work that fast.

I'm normally not one to scream fake story, but this one is like they weren't even trying to make it sound real.
First: Who on earth wouldn't notice 40k just disappearing? Even if you're making six-figures a year that's a LOT of money to just disappear over 4 days.
Second: The mother was someone knowledgeable enough to find and recruit a hacker, but OP was dumb enough to click a strange link and enter their bank info without thinking twice? Unless this story is 20 years old no one in this day and age is that dumb.
Third: The husband's response is so unbelievable. I don't care if it's your parent who did the crime, no one would believe someone could steal 40k and still have good intentions. The fact he wasn't was with OP to just send MIL to jail and move on is the biggest red flag for both the relationship and the story.
Fourth: Minor point, but the fact OP couldn't initially summarize "I clicked a suspicious link" and it took until the next update to clarify how someone got access to her account is super suspicious.
Normally I go into these with the assumption they're fake stories for Reddit clout, but the others usually have enough context to be semi-believable, this is just flat out fake.

I grew up in an abusive household and this is what I think could be happening from my point of view. The reason the mom was overly bold and thought that she could get away with this is because she has been able to her whole life. People like her are narcissist and very self serving. Whenever these people get caught or called out their unreasonable behavior and/or actions they usually have a sob story along with it. If that doesn’t solely work to drop the subject a break down occurs and the crocodile tears begin. Followed by a very vague and generic explanation that can never fully be explained. Here are some examples that I feel like that mom from OP story probably gave to people. One could be she felt like had to protect her son from OP because who could fault a parent for wanting to protect their child. Or another one could hear is I just panicked because I felt like you were going to leave me behind and I couldn’t take that thought. Many people would have compassion for a parent trying to navigate life once they become an open nester especially if the parent and child were close. However, when asked to elaborate, there is never any concrete answers to what would lead them to believe or feel this way. This is simply because there is none to be given since is all coming from them being selfish. All these steps are just tactics to lessen the impact of their actions so that there will be little to no consequences coming their way. If things still aren’t going in their way, they will try switch the narrative to turn others against the actual victim like family and friends. So now they can appear as the one that has been wronged and the other person just overreacted. Hopefully all that peer pressure will force the real victims to concede or crumble letting the real perpetrators save face. The reason the son change his tune so quick is that when he went to visit his mom she broke down. Gave him lame excuses so that he would feel bad causing him to back pedal. If he doesn’t recognize, wake up to these manipulation tactics, and get the therapy he needs to break this unhealthy cycle he will end up alone. The OP will always feel like second place to his mother and a breakdown of marriage will occur.

I'd get an annulment asap if possible, because if my partner is basically falterinig right off the bat it probably won't get any better, especially when his mom goes to jail. Maybe I jump the gun here, but I'm not sure how much the marriage is worth if you need counseling right off the bat after being married for only a few days/weeks.
Edit: So, he helped her out with a good lawyer, so unless they have seperate finances, OP is basically paying to lower the sentence of the person who tried to screw her over?

I WOULD NOT have accepted that hacker’s mom’s apology. I would have acknowledged it, but never accept it. Poverty is not an excuse for crime. Many, many people came from modest means and never turn to crime. My parents were poor when they were young, and they never turned to crime. Poverty is not an excuse. #crimefamily.

But you know the saying, “Desperate times call for desperate measures.” The hacker was trying to support his mother and gone into hacking and doing harmless pranks on people’s exes. I am sure that if the MiL didn’t offer so much money, the hacker wouldn’t have accepted her offer.

Its stupid that his OP husband even stay with this woman, she kinda feels controlling since she is taller and older... His mom messed up and going for jail.. at least OP could do wat her husband asking for it... Since OP got all her money and at the end of day she is stilll the only husband family.
