Tom Waits has to be one of the most underrated artists of the 20th century. His sales aren't relative to his popularity on this medium. He is a great storyteller and his vocal delivery really touches you. Add to that the fact he composes his own music and he wrote his first two albums so song. He has to be one of the most consistently good artists of all time!

Bone Machine is my favorite album by Waits, and this my favorite track. It haunts me still, nearly 25 years later from first hearing it.

Mine too, perhaps. Love the way Tom sings the countryside life. I moved from countryside to City and discovered Waits, real city life music, Swordfishtrombones, Blue Valentines, Rain Dogs, And that was my music. Lately, I start longing to the countryside, make the move again, Like Tom did. Waits's lyrics are very strong, Bob Dylan level, for sure. And this must be the most beautiful Love/Hate song ever made.(..."I fell in love withe your sailor's moth and your wounded eyes, but you better get down on the floor, don't you know this is war?!...")

i first heard bone machine in a 1992 pub lock in ,in london where everyone was on lsd and sitting by a roaring open fire and the tripping landlord put on the "new album by tom waits!"i nearly cried when this song came on ,on never hearing him before ,this man with the grittiest sad voice i fell in love with that night ,easily one of the greatest songwriters in our history!xx

The Part You Throw Away and Who Are You are maybe his more moving songs for me. Waits manages to be touching and makes you think, at the same time. One of the most interesting artist we have. Couldn't care less if he could or should sell more. It happens quite often that, some of the best musicians and writers are known and loved not by masses, but by loyal circles of people who feel touched by their music lyrics or books. Think he never tried to be a massive seller. He is happy with his promotion and profile. And find the whole a clever one. It answers to the image he built of himself. ❤️👍😇🙏

This is a beautiful song in its honesty, David Rodgers. It reminds me that murder victims are probably often as responsible as the killers. It reminds me of my marriage, my sister, or myself. There are all kinds of reasons for wearing a mask. I hope to never be in a situation where I feel that I must to get by.

It's a bitter song about heartbreak and regret and not being able to let go of someone. The person speaking is clearly has strong feelings for this woman still (though probably no longer in love) but he's saying awful things about her, describing her as a two-faced insincere whore.

This is abstract. I don't really here a verse verse bridge chorus. It's not his traditional blues/jazz. It's something else, I've not heard anything like it. It's weird also, I can see why he is an inspiration to the likes of Claypool.
    It's a touching, scathing number

This just reminds me that all we hear on tv now with the adele, the kathy, the one direction etc... well they're ok until you hear something like tom waits, the ramones, talking heads, nirvana, elliott smith.. then you ask yourself how come those type of guys aren't on tv? Why do they show mediocrity, disney-compatible stuff? And why do all those second-rate artists all sound the same? And who decides how they sound?
Tto those who feel what I am saying, I say let's turn off our tvs, radios etc. I don't like being treated like that way.

senglorama Amen, they tell the brainless what to love/enjoy. we know better, we have graduated from the school of higher education known as Tom Waits University. Where heart break and misery and laughter walk hand in hand, we are the truly lucky ones because we still feel what's real and meaningful. these other people are delusional and I really don't want to join the world that they believe in. it's a false and unfeeling place, where the only one who matters is one's self. true soul and heart ache comes from loving someone more than yourself, and that's what sets Tom and his truest fans apart from the rest of the world. God bless you true people of feeling and love and sorrow. God smiles on hearts like ours.
