    Im an 8th grader trying to get a head start on entomology -- this videos super straight foward and helped me a ton, thank you so much !!

    Great seeing more Insect Hunter vids coming out, keep it up Jason. My undergraduate entomology course just ended this month and I got 100% on my lab collection, 120 species and 90 families. Your tutorials and videos were extremely helpful while I was learning how and where to collect. Now that the class is over unfortunately I had to turn in my cyanide kill jar, but I'm interested in collecting unique and cool insects for my personal collection as a hobby. This was a perfect video and now I can construct my own kill jar to dispatch insects in the field, instead of taking them home in plastic bags or bottles to the freezer.
    I think what you call your "dramatic/goofy" style is endearing and is meant to grab attention from young people especially. While being straight informational would be shorter videos, you sell the channel to an extent with your personality. Your videos achieve the goal of being informational, just continue to add your valuable personal stories, experience, and advice. Dramatic or goofy language in teaching can be effective in helping students and amateur entomologists remember important concepts or lessons. Keep up the good work.

    There could be some instances in which I might want to use this technique. It would be a very rare occasion. I hope this doesn't sound like a silly question but I have to ask. Does this cause the insects and/or spiders much discomfort?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад +3

      Jheng Ong great question! At work I usually use ethyl acetate because I am usually in a work lab with a lot of it, but most folks will have an easier time finding acetone based nail polish remover.

    If added nail polish remover once to jar then we need to add it again and again before using?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  4 года назад +1

      Yes you have to charge the jar each time you want to kill something. A charge will only last for about an hour or two before it dissipates. Hope that helps.

    • @theworthysoul

      Yes it is. Anyways, why do you kill spiders? They are good because they eat mosquitoes.

    • @ShellyCline
      @ShellyCline Год назад

      It's abuse because it's unnecessary. Just the fact that you already have them trapped in a bottle means you DON'T have to kill them.
      If they're already trapped in a bottle you could easily relocate them outside.

    • @InsectHunter

      Yes technically. You will just have to change out each time you do it and you would need a lot to get as good of absorption.

    Way back when I was in biology class in high school, we made kill jars by putting cotton in the bottom of the jar with a small amount of carbon tetrachloride. Kill was almost instantaneous. I don't think you can even get carbon tetrachloride anymore. It's vapors can be quite toxic to the liver, so really not safe. Acetone is a much better choice. I don't understand why he mixed the plaster in the kill jar. It would be much better to mix it up in a disposable cup and pour it into the jar. Nice smooth layer on the bottom and no clean up.
