KTM 300 EXC TPI: The ultimate all-round dirt bike?

- The fuel-injected KTM 300 two-stroke enduro bike makes so much sense as it's one machine that can pretty much do everything well. The bike is built to tackle obstacles with ease thanks to its smooth, linear power curve.
And of course it's a two-stroke so is light, fun to ride and easy to maintain. And the fuel injection means no more messing with jets or mixing fuel.
MotoHead's Dave Willet gets to grips with the bike that is consistently the biggest-selling dirt bike in KTM's range to see if the reality lives up to the hype.
Owning a 250 TPI, also missed the midrange kick, put on a FMF Fatty Header with the 2.1 Powercore. Absolutely loving it, would give it a try anytime
I’m looking into getting a tpi bike new. I been riding a 2002 Cr250r and Iove the feel of the 250. How do you like yours ? I do desert riding
Don't be afraid to turn the power valve out. It totally wakes up the bike. My 300 was a total dog until I turned mine out about 1 1/2 full turns. Now its a crispy rocket ship!
Imagine if KTM brought back a modernized 550 MXC with TPI. A street legal open class 2 stroke with reasonable gas mileage, improved tractability and mapping. It won't ever happen but what a dream machine that would be.
I love my 21 TE 300I but 3 things could make this bike absolutely incredible.
1. Stiffer front forks.
2. Slightly more hit.
3. 10-15 pounds lighter.
Bike isn’t that heavy but I feel for enduro riding a lighter bike would be amazing. It will happen eventually.
I have a suggestion if you haven't already, Maybe a lighter frame, My friend had a 2020 KTM 500 EXCF and it was heavy for him so he got a lighter frame I can't remember what one it was though, May he a carbon fibre or something, and the forks you could either get new ones or get them reworked maybe? Not to sure, I've never owned a KTM, Husky or Gasgas, it's just what I would try if I did own one
Really good video, nice detail
Nice video! That's it for me. A KTM 300 EXC TPI is incoming :D
Interesting that you went from a 150 to the 300. I have had a 2017 150xcw since 2019 and its been awesome, even in the super technical hard enduro situations. Im pretty light at around 145lbs, so the 150 has enough power for me, but the tractor like power of the 300s have always had me curious. People often say the tpi is quite soft and linear, but the 300 cc label does have me a bit worried that it may be too much. Of course with the mechanical pv, that can be adjusted to taste to a certain degree... I may jump on a 300 if the right deal comes along. Worst case, if I dont like it, I can always sell it ;)
OK you convinced me. I'm buying one.
I love the bike....I'm 205 lb plus gear and I am bottoming out the front forks. Why not just get the higher spring rate for existing forks? Randy
Definitely do your power valve, just quater turn at a time, woke my 300 up loads, definitely makes a difference and im 110 hours since i set it so it caused no issues mate
Is the power valve the three different springs?
3 reasons why the 300TPI will NEVER be the ultimate bike (speaking as a rider who currently owns 2 KTMs and have ONLY ridden KTMs since 2009):
1. WP Open Cartridge Front Suspension (anyone who has ridden them gets my point);
2. Engine Reliability - I had brand new 300 TPIs (2020 and 2021) - both suffered a critical failure in the crank after ~170 hours (mind you that both were top end rebuilt at 90H).
3. Fun Factor - this simply isn't an exciting bike. the engine is super smooth and linear and quite easy to ride, but it just doesn't really bring a smile to your face.
of course, all of this is nonsense, because there is no such thing is an "ultimate bike"... as we all know it's about 90% the rider that counts...
you all have a great ride 🤙🤙
Try the two stroke performance medium compression head and ecu reflash. Has a lot of great reviews
Yes, they add some exra oil to make it a bit safer. I have the midium head with the PV wound out flush with the case. Completely different bike.
I've heard the low-end torque of the 300 EXC is really good. Is it kind of like the low end torque of a KX500, because I used to have one of those back in '04. I used it mostly for woods riding and a little open terrain riding. The low end torque was really strong and it also pulled good on open terrain at higher speeds. But I could never get the jetting right on that bike, so I ended up selling it after a couple of years. I'm wanting to get a KTM these days and get back into some woods riding.
Definitely one of the best.
Question: This seems like the ultimate bike for me but too expensive. Can I get similar performance in the slowest technical parts out of a 2019 Yamaha YX250 2-stroke if I change gearing? I'm looking for something that works both on a motocross track and offroad for a tall and heavy rider but isn't too expensive to buy and own.
I ride a 2020 300 tpi but have ridden my brorhers 19 tpi with the TSP head and remap for hard enduro,it turns the bike into something similar to the carbed bike but better.
My previous bike was a 2012 300 so i know how the carbed bikes feel,my 20 will get the TSP upgrade soon...no brainer
Out of All the enduro bikes what one would you recommend for motocross?
Thanks
Put on a motocross silener, for an exempel Pro Circuit shorty silencer. You will get some of that hit you are missing 👍
You need to speak with Jeff Slavens of Slavens racing in Colorado, he knows his two strokes and does all sorts of stuff for 300 KTMs. A higher compression head will give you more snap for sure.
@motohead slavensracing.com
have you tried the 250? i ride a 2018 250 tpi and it has that 2 stroke hit you are missing but you can still lug it and feels a bit lighter than the 300 but its not, i love it !
100% 250 is the best tpi. 👍🏻
Yes I’ve ridden the full range mate. I agree the 250 tpi has better hit but it’s still not like a good setup carburettor machine in my opinion.
300 better. Less shifting, more lug, more low and mid power, ride gear higher, less wheel spin, more traction, better hill climb, etc - 250 may feel lighter but so does a 125 too dosnt mean it’s better. The 300 can not be beat.

The 300 is way better, by the way it's the same weight...but the 300 has much more lugging to it. The 300 also has a much better resale value...more power, and the 250 is a machine that was surpassed by the 300!
What’s people’s experiences taking this or the 250 tpi to motocross ??
Or racing it at Mx
Rode the new ones on demo days, just cant get into those TPI bikes. they just feel so sluggish compared to a carbed bike.
Does take some time for the head to come round but once it does you will definitely enjoy it. It’s the slow stuff where it shines for sure.
Red spring makes it angry
@@beauclose2235 Does the red spring make it easier to power wheelie over obstacles?
I’m assuming that the power valve timing is fixed as it’s dyno calibrated to open at the exact RPM to match the TPI fuel map?
Carb model with lectron is the best. Much lighter aswell. My 19 tx300 is 217lbs. Same plastic design as 2021 but last year of carb for tx300. 2019 it also comes stock with a kick start back up. Still 217lbs
Hey, would you recommend a beginners to start on a 250 tpi or 300 tpi or can both be used for a beginners. With 0 experience but good self control.
Thanks in advance
You have no idea how much control you'll have til you get in a tricky situation. It's very easy for powerful bikes to get away from you. One bump could cause you to whisky throttle (hitting the gas without meaning to or being ready) then you can crash
Ive been riding for 23 years. Ive done alot of Hard Enduro and MX Races. In my experience. If you are a beginner (I have taught many on many different bikes), Get a 250F Enduro bike. A Yamaha WR 250 is the best beginner bike (Unless you consider Air cooled 230cc bikes) any 250F is a great beginner bike. And it will be great on power for years. Jump on to the 2t 250/300s when you have the necessary clutch and throttle control that a 2t needs.
However. If you are going to predominantly do very flat flowy trails. It doesnt make much of a difference what you get (As long as its not a 450)
I am struggling between the 150 or the 300! I want them both so much. Got a 500 exc-f and 350 xc-w and really want to 2-STROKE!
I’d have them both if I could too for different reasons. I find the 150 so much fun because you still have to ride it and figure out the gear ratio and Rev range and it’s so light to manoeuvre. The 300 makes the job easy so you look for more tricky stuff to ride and it just ticks along them open areas with ease
250. Best of the 2 strokes for sure

nice one man!
Forks are without doubt biggest downfall! Wants to spit you off when you really get on the brakes hard. Dive central. Speaking of brakes.. how come you want to change brakes Dave? Other than front being too grabby at times I think they are very good..
No because half the viewers don’t have the money or aren’t willing to pay that much for a bike
Mate I’ve got the 2020 te 250 she rev’s out a lot faster then the 300 has a good hit get 1 of them 😂👍🏻
I do prefer the 250 over the 300 I’ll just work off the Christmas timber first lol
100% agree, more snappy than 300. Feels lighter because of it too.

@@apostate4apostate494 Na!
@@GaryCurtis262 don’t get me wrong the 125 and 250 are a lot of fun. They have that light fun factor for sure but when it comes to performance and versatility I’m sorry the 300 smokes the 250. 300 will usually leave the 250
stuck spinning on the side of a hill. The 300 is a literal tractor
Nice bike but No..its not the best bike.. Season???? We ride all year round here in NZ 🤣
Think the front suspension is perfect for u,ur not that good and fast rider👍🏻
Pump up your forks a couple psi..... so easy wtf lol
Its not an xc bud....
