Jacks grow on wood and chants grow on the ground, but you'll see jacks grow on the ground all the time. Rather, in these cases, there is buried wood that you can't always see appearing as if they are growing on the ground. Chanterelles also usually grow in singles and Jacks usually grow in clusters from the same point... but sometimes chants are clustered and sometimes jacks grow singly. Jack O Lantern mushrooms usually grow in clusters like this image below, but sometimes they grow singly. Even though it looks like they are growing on the ground, they are attaching to buried wood.
