    It's funny hip hop depending on the artist has influence from different subgenres of rock. Travis Scott has a real grunge rock feel while Uzi got pop punk sound and you can even say that Kid Cudi is alternative rock.

      I feel what you're saying. There were definitely some good tracks but we know they could have done better. Their collabs before this album were spectacular and they have good chemistry. But this album was hella rushed and should have been taken more seriously.

    If we're equating Travis' rap to Nirvana's impact on rock, then we have to say Cudder is The Pixies to Travis and his sonic impacts on pop music currently. Let it happen. Nothing great can plateau.
    This was a topic I've discussed with many friends. Swell concept!

    I enjoyed the shit out of this video. A lot of people don't "get" Nirvana, you clearly do. Most people focus on superficial things like "grunge" or whatever and how the media characterized Nirvana. You kept it about the music and you represented how Kurt Cobain saw himself and what he was trying to accomplish with his music. A lot of people today lump Nirvana together with a bunch of bands Cobain hated, but you correctly put their place in music history in it's proper context, they were just three guys who loved punk rock and made loud aggressive catchy brilliant honest music. It blows me away to see the influence Kurt Cobain had on my generation. I was born the year he died and I relate to the connection other people had with his music, despite never being able to see him live. His influence gives me hope in the future of music.. hopefully we stop making music that sounds like it got made on a MacBook Pro that all has the same boring and sterile sound and get back to making raw high energy emotionally evocative music.
    I watch Nirvana live with my laptop on my chest and headphones in from time to time.. you watch those guys perform a song like Breed or Teen Spirit or Territorial Pissings live and it just makes me thing "this is what music should be" like it's just self expression in it's purest form.

    While I do think the Rap/Hip-Hop is entering a punk rock phase I doubt that the Genre really splits like rock did. I think the way everyone is connected really prevents this. Plus the overall culture of Hip-Hop. Which I do think is actually a good thing.

  • @johnconnor210
    @johnconnor210 4 года назад +2

    Interesting take. I'm a hip hop purest and I love meaningful lyrics. But as far as the new generation I have to say Travis Scott is the best as far as mainstream. To his credit he's actually is a good rapper not an emcee but a good rapper. His production is very good. You can hear a bit of the boom bap sound of the 90s. Yes hip hop has changed especially within the last 5 yrs or so. Yes we've had ground breaking artist to come out before then but not a full movement. Mainstream rap was at stalemate for like a decade. Now the mumble rap scene in opinion isn't good music but at least it's different. So yeah you can say hip hop is at its punk stage but remember punk didn't last because it lacked alot of substance for the exception of a few bands like bad brains for example. But I believe travis scott will be the only one that will be left standing when this period comes to an end because he's not a mumble rapper he's a rapper a good one at that.

    Travis Scott is not on the same wavelength as Nirvana. Nirvana had emotion, great modulations/arrangements, great musicianship. It’s very cool that Travis is a fan of them, and he sounds like a pretty cool guy for sure, but it stops there. Much of that music just falls flat… and I am a guy who loves rock and hip hop.

    this commentator has it twisted
    hiphop has never fetishized the past but always had respect for it.. if it’s the African drum or jazz & soul.
    ... Punk is inherently chaos and doesn’t care for the future...
    If dominant culture (popular hiphop) is becoming a combination of the two.. that’s fine... a hybrid but to say that is hiphop is not factual.
    In the same breath you could say this is the new punk, but no you rather sped up the demise of another form of black music that’s seen better days.

    Rap is not the same as rock in any way whatsoever. It's a lyrical art and rock and roll type genres are a world apart focusing on the instruments and the melodies harmonies and the FOCUS on the GUITAR!!!! Not the image the sound and how it's made bebeh. Everybody wants to be a rockstar but nobody these days in the mainstream and RAP is not rock. Dont lie and act like you know music genres you dont listen to and have no comprehension nor appreciation for. The rock image was a lifestyle, the music was it's own.

    • @MormonJesus299
      @MormonJesus299 5 лет назад

      You’re very focused on the music and not what it represents in its historical context. I listen to both genres and am familiar with what punk represented and how it was received by many people. My own father, who grew up listening to the clash, sex pistols, black flag, circle jerks etc. has compared modern hip hop to the punk movement. It’s clear that popular hip hop is taking a step away from the industry standard and becoming a lot more diy the way punk rock had rebelled against rock. So I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to compare this stage of hip hop to the punk revolution of the late 70’s on.

    The thing is you can rebel and try to innovate and not follow trends but the Music has to be Exceptional it has to be great , it has to be undeniable across the board , unfortunately i don't hear that with Travis Scott , kid cudi touched it with Day n nite and the Pursuit of Happiness, and 1 or two other songs but he would have had to maintain that same level thorough out which he hasn't.I would say currently Kanye west holds the crown creatively within the last 10 yrs .. We are due for a big shift within the next couple of years . I feel that the current popular production 808 style with 16th note hihats is becoming stale .The music is essentially a 4 bar loop Arranged into a full song , it is lazy and uninspired , the bar is set low production wise. And even though The lyrics are melodic they lack depth , wit, sarcasm , irony , message , ect . Unlike Nirvana Travis Scott lacks many of those quality's in his music as well as all of his Trap peers. Travis has a lot of work to do to even be mention in the same breath musically with what Kurt and Nirvana did and Meant to their generation . I am not Buying .

    I can understand where you come from in terms readjusting the standard for the genres. Having said that
    This is wildly inaccurate

    punk melodies were challenging " lol wut? punk melodies are like 3 notes def not challenging. If you mean in the pure unadulterated energy coming from the tracks sure but not from melodies
    and kurt cobain wasn't rly that inspired by punk he was more into indie raw rock stuff like dinosaur jr, sonic youth, neil young.

      I think he means that they challenged the normal, not an actual testement to difficulty

    Listening to rock music doesn't make you a rockstar. Being the star of a badass rock band does. Rapstar's are a thing though.
    Also Nirvana isnt fucking punk.

      Nybius Is Lost Kurt Cobain considered his music closer to New Wave than anything, but also admitted that Nirvana would be put in the “punk” and “grunge” box. But he never felt a part of either genre. These genre titles are just created by the media. I don’t really agree with it, but it is what it is

      They never said he was punk. They were explaining how he didn’t really like how punk couldn’t be more melodic. He basically brought melody to punk which kinda created grunge

      punk is not necessarily the sound. it's more "get up and do it" attitude. That's what made punk rock PUNK. Kurt got up and did it. with Nirvana

    THIS IS A STRETCH . THERE IS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN TRAVIS SCOTT & NIRVANA .
    JUST BECAUSE TRAVIS WEARS MULTIPLE NIRVANA TEE SHIRTS , DOESN'T MEAN THAT HE DOES ROCK MUSIC OR IS A ROCK STAR .

      The way Travis's structures and engineers his music production is similar to punk rock is the argument
