All of our residences have had a water softener and my hair and skin seem to benefited from having them. Interesting though, when my husband and I were vacationing in Italy particularly around Rome, I found the water so soft that I did not need hair conditioner at all .My hair never look better.

I had really bad hormonal acne and my tap water definitely aggravated it. I started washing my face with distilled water and it made such a difference that my dermatologist asked what I had done. I don't think it would have been a problem if I weren't already acne prone, as I'd used tap water for years, but my sensitivity came about abruptly, got worse over six months, and quickly got better after a month of distilled water + cetaphil.

My experience: I was living in Mass. and the water was very very soft. My skin and hair were great. I moved to a state with high environmental pollution, fracking, and hard water. My hair is an odd texture (not good), my skin is dry and itchy. I never feel like my scalp is clean. When I go back to Mass. it takes a couple days of soft water and my skin feels great and my hair looks great. So I purchased a soft water system for my house. Pros: body wash and shampoo make foamy bubbles again. Cons: My hair is still bad and my skin still dry and itchy. This leads me to think there is something in the water that can't be removed with a filter and even adding a softener doesn't make it like the water in Mass.

I keep a $2 spray bottle of half apple cider vinegar and half water in my shower. I spray my hair and body down with it once a week after my regular shampoo and wash, let it work for a few minutes, then rinse. I think the acid helps dissolve the mineral and soap scum build up. My hair stinks like sulfur and rust while the vinegar’s soaking (yum). I find since I started to do this; my hair is shinier and my skin is less itchy.
Also, for those of us reading labels, trisodium EDTA is the ingredient in shampoos and body washes that will dissolve limescale build up from our water.

I’m very careful with my skin care and body care products and make sure they are very moisturizing. The good new is that we’ve complained so much, that our township is running the public water line down our country road to connect to our house. I was told that the new water treatment plant near our home removes all impurities from the water and we will need no filtration, chlorine, or water softeners.

Next best thing I’ve found over the years is toilet bowl cleaner but that’s really harsh to use. On my hair to remove the iron I get a Malibu treatment about three or four times a year. I am turning 65 in a month, and it's time to change my routine from the double cleanse (the second with Castille soap!), B5 gel, and moisturizer I've been using for the past 20 years. (I'm not sure what B5 gel did, if anything!) I also now live in a hard-water area and struggle with dry and flaky hair, scalp, and skin. I have "chicken skin" and itchiness that keeps me awake at night. Nothing has helped with itching so far, including hydrocortisone or oatmeal baths and lotions, but I recall seeing a video in which you describe a good product to deal with that. I'm excited to find that video again. The product was called something like CeraVe "itchy and flaky" -- so romantic, and so utterly my skin. Boo hoo!

I use to live in Az, I owned a water store. I had a loop in my garage, I was able to have a fliter on my house which made a huge difference. I also believe in a a purification system, a five stage for your house or apartment and it is placed under you sink and it purifies the water you drink, it can be connected to your refrigerator, allowing your ice to be purified as well. A lot of people think spring water is purified, it is not ! You can buy a filter to put on your shower and basically it's a carbon filter, which will take some of the garbage out of your water. I have moved and I am getting ready to put a in house filtration system in my garage. I did hook up a filter on my shower for right now, I have seen a difference in my skin. I only will drink purified water and my dog will only drink purified water.

I was using Avene cleansers and moisturizers for years - they were the only products that wouldn't strip or irritate my dry sensitive skin. Then I tried Cerave moisturizing cream, and fell in love with it! Now I am also using Cerave gentle facial cleanser. I can honestly say that my skin actually feels better now, and I pay like 2-3x less money for my skin care.

I moved from New York to Dallas 4 years ago and my skin has greatly suffered as the water in Dallas is EXTREMELY hard. I noticed every time I went back to NY that my skin became so clear I didn't even need makeup. I got a shower filter and that helped my body but my face is still dry and aggravated. I live in an apartment so I can't get a water softener. I cleanse my face with filtered water but it's still aggravating my skin with random breakouts. It's also very sensitive. Hard water is prevalent through most of the Province of Alberta due to the proximity to the Rocky Mountain watersheds that feed the rivers that supply metropolitan water sources. The beautiful aquamarine colour of the Bow River is the result of those minerals. If you wonder why you use so much soap, shampoo etc. hard water is the reason. That the hard water reacts with the foaming agents and films the skin make perfect sense (thus the reason you get low foaming with skin/hair cleansing and it takes more water feel it rinsed off). With regard to thermal spring water, is it different from natural hot springs? I'm not sure. Perhaps in mineral composition of the water? I know that natural hot springs in places like Banff, Alberta, Canada have naturally occurring sulphur (which you can smell) that I would assume would be beneficial for the skin, if one rises off and moisturizes after your dip in the pool. The warm water is also lovely for muscles, arthritis etc.. Has there been any research done on North American hot spring benefits for skin? Perhaps it's a potential area to look at.

Never really thought too much about the h2o and how it meshes with body. Interesting. I know though that h20 softeners do increase the sodium content, and I suspect more of a myth in the aspect of the body responding negatively to that salt content? Recommendations are for non-salt softeners in drinking water. Bleach in bathtub, sound great, that will soften it. Science is so empowering to solve problems. I like how your mind works and what you are sharing. It pushes us and it's unique for a you tube get together on skin care. TY.

Hi! I've already tried it! It was refreshing for a few seconds but then I had to wash my face with a washcloth. I didn't like the effect on my skin. I know that currently many Beauty youtubeurs are talking about the merits of floral waters. But with fragrances it's not safe. I think I will continue to apply a gel under my eyes like Deep Dive and my moisturizer. If I don't use makeup during the day, I sometimes reapply the gel and moisturizer under my eyes only. It's my midday snacks....lol! When I was in the countryside, there was a hard water problem. After a while, the inside surfaces of the dishwasher began to change colour. It looked like rust. Very difficult to clean! Very good choice of subject! Thank you to you and the subscribers who asked the question!

Brands like Vichy and La Roche Posay, I believe use spring water for the "aqua" component of their skin care (I think, I might be wrong). Still, the products they have for dry skin, still dried out my skin as I found them too watery and thin for my skin. I have to admit I am extremely dry (not flaky on the face), but... there's that. Oops you just said that as I was typing it! LOL!

My daughter and I contracted MRSA from our FL well water. We have a water softener; however, the well had become contaminated by bacteria growth. The well was dug in the late 80's and, by today's standard, is now considered a shallow well... which can be susceptible to run-off water... which can contain toxic materials and contaminants. We recovered, and oddly my son's skin wasn't affected! *SANITIZE YOUR WELL REGULARLY, AS NEEDED. *APPLY ADDITIVES IN THE BRINE TANK, EACH TIME YOU ADD SALT, TO CLEAN THE RESIN BEADS, SO THEY CAN PROPERLY FUNCTION . ***Private water supplies should be tested annually for coliform bacteria to detect contamination problems early.

Thank you for this video! What are your thoughts on using distilled water to cleanse the face? I have bought some from the grocery store and put it in a spray bottle to spray away my foaming cleanser, then applied moisturizer while the face is still wet. Distilled water has a pH much closer to the skin's natural pH than the harder tap water in my area.
