This video is clear and concise for such a complex topic! I wish more was said about the map analogy though. The most accurate map must necessarily be as big as the place depicted, and would thus be useless. Maps are summaries, omitting some information to focus on a specific type of data, whether that be elevation, water systems, ecology, or politics. In that way, classifying people by culture---stereotyping----is like a map. Its also unavoidable because people are complex beyond understanding; even to themselves, but some maps are worse than others---either less detailed or picking priorities poorly.
When it comes to culture, I think asia knows how to apply it best and it is something that is important. Also it is something that we use in entertainment and can be very exciting to people.
Dear Eva, I showed my class this video for our unit of study on beliefs and values and we are using the iceberg model to analyse various rituals, traditions and culture. They are 11 year olds and we all wish to thank you for enlightening our minds. Vinaka Vakalevu (Thanks very much In Fijian), Shan Saberi
+shan saberi Hi, glad to hear that you liked the video and I am thrilled that you start with students that young! It is so important to educate people (all ages) oon cultural awareness, tolerance and sensitivity. Thank you!!
I'd love to use this to teach about culture and establishing a class culture for my students. Is there by chance a slower version of this video? I teach middle school for reference.
Hello Eva, I really like your video and with your permission I will use it for a class about intercultural competence. Can I ask you if you can think of any activity that could help kids understand how much culture can affect the way we look at the world? I was thinking about pictures of everyday life in other countries, activities that are normal in that context but not from the students' point of view, but I am having some difficulties finding sources and materials. Thx.
HI Eva, great video. I was wondering if you could turn the video into a more universally designed video so it could be accessible to over diverse learners who need a reader or audio? Lots of ways to do this in Doodley which it appears you used in this video and I use in my courses.
Dear Eva, we would love to use this video for educational purposes, is there any chance we can have it send as an mp3-file? Kindly Dyveke Nielsen, Communications Consultant in SEAHEALTH, Denmark
Hi Eva is it possible to get this final drawing of this as an infographic? Would be great as a display in a middle school humanities classroom. Thanks Rob
hi, I would like to use your video, for an exam in my ethical studies and I would like to know what your references are resp. what your sources were? Thanks (:
Hey Eva I am just wondering are there any more resources or references that you could pass on that would be useful for me to further my knowledge and understanding of "Culture". And maybe as well what resources did you use to develop your own understanding of culture and create this video!? XD Super interested thanks for your help.
Hi, you could look into the main theoretical models by Hofstede, Hall, Lewis, Trompenaars. I like to use models by Erin Meyer and Solomon & Schell, since they ave a more contemporary approach. The resources I used for the video are a mix of all of the above. The creativity is mine ;-)
@@qingye8547 murder is allowed under different cirunstances in most cultures, in USA you can be sentenced to death penalty for example. In my opinion there is not an universal aspect of culture.
Is there such thing as universal culture? Various philosophers would give different definitions of culture but most of them would agree in the fact that there is no universal aspect of culture.
Culture is the way that things MUST BE in a certain area of the world so that everybody in that certain area of the world can go on another day. It is the way that people with certain physical traits must live to stay healthy physically and mentally. Culture isn't sticking one's finger up one's butt hole and then making everybody's food. It is not running into other race's lives and taking things that aren't theirs, unless they're being deprived of food, water and toiletry supplies. It is not going out of one's way to be mischievous or a jerk to somebody just because they can. ((White girl using Chinese guy friend's account)
Not bad, but. Were the pyramids, found both in Egypt and South America, and other places, "a collective programming of the mind" (s), of the Cultures there? Or do they as a result indicate what Culture is, as the realization of what it means to truly be human and one organism? And should we perhaps consider a different denotation of the word culture with a small case "c" relative to an upper case "C"? Let's see. For examples we have, Greek Culture, Egyptian Culture (Menes), Chinese Culture (Huang Di/Yellow Emperor), Incan Culture (Pachacuti), even the Christian Culture , with Jesus as the enlightened progenitor, and I want to include the Babylonian Culture, and the Cultures following Moses, Buddha, Zoroaster, Krishna, etc.. And lastly, at present, we have, the American (c)ulture. Not yet (Culture) relatively speaking, they're too many opinions, theories, and beliefs (assumptions)--no unity of understanding--gradual stages of enlightenment. The elements or virtues are there, e.g., Freedom and Equality, the auspicious beginnings of discovering the roots and origin of Culture, but they remain a promise of the future realization of Culture. A lower case "c" would allow for, "a collective programming of the mind". And, by the way, I am a product of our culture, but at the time I can view it and confront and change some of its effects and errors in myself as awareness, knowledge, and understanding, with help, of course. That is a strange capability of humans; to be able to step outside and view the creation (s). We must have it all in side of us. As a whole body. Not a "program". Thank you for the posting.
Interesting information. I like the comment "We see culture as a collective, but people are individuals first"
That stood out for me too. A very simple and informative video. 😁
Thanks a lot for sharing your video. Find it very interesting.

So the word "Culture" can be used to describe Humanity and its Life as a whole?
that's too broad, in my view. I see culture as commonly accepted standars of what is normal shared by a group of people.
Yes. An example of Universal Culture is: murder is not allowed.

It takes some elements from "Mute" by Quantum Optics: soundcloud.com/quantum_optics/mute

Seems a little odd to me to have to break down such a simple concept? If you have a culture, it's a concept a person would intuitively understand.
