I never realized there were so many jokes in this movie that I didn't understand as a kid, but now watching it again with you guys I'm like "Oh, that's what they meant by that."

You'd probably be surprised just how many films or even cartoons you watched as a kid that were like that. This is pretty well known, but The Simpsons is FULL of layers of subtle humor and satire that goes completely over kids' heads. They literally make a joke about Mr. Smithers waiting in line at the ER because he has something stuck up his rear, which might not sound like a joke The Simpsons would make, but that's because they don't actually say it outright, like a show like Family Guy probably would. You just have to be familiar with Mr. Smithers' character, and notice his awkward stance and the fact that he's the ONLY person standing, and he says very nervously "um....I really need to get this taken care of" when there isn't anything noticeably wrong with him.
That's writing so cleverly subtle, most _adults_ don't even realize the joke being hinted at there. But that's golden age Simpsons for you - not one line or moment is wasted on filler. Everything is an opportunity.

The story about this movie is a bit more interesting that both stories.
    - At Disney, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chariman of Disney Films, had a MAJOR falling out with Michael Eisner, then CEO, and left and teamed up with Spielberg to make DreamWorks to be a competitor.
    - They needed ideas for their first animated movie, so they went with one that was already in development at Disney called "Army Ants".
    - Katzenberg after the split, kept in touch with the animated side of Disney, especially Pixar, like John Lasseter (Then head of Pixar, Toy Story 1 and 2 directors) and Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, Wall-E, John Carter and episodes of Stranger Things)
    - They talked about ideas, including one evolved idea "Bugs" ... Take of that what you will.
    - That idea at Disney turned into their Pixar's second movie, A Bug's Life, and at DreamWorks, Antz.
    - The rivalry really started after learning the premise was nearly the same, but both films did just as well critically and finically.
That fight lasted for years since, and looking at the current output now, there's been peaks and valleys here and there for both, but a bit more consistency with Disney and Pixar as whole, with DreamWorks with a banger every so often.

The backstory of this movie was this was their first film they made. The reason they are the same as Bugs Life is that the founder of Dreamworks worked at Pixar at the time when they were developing Bugs Life. He had a falling out with the project and the studio so he went off and founded Dreamworks and made Antz from the ideas he had working with Pixar

There's a lot of instances of movies being released around the same time with similar ideas or pitches. In Hollywood, sometimes a pitch or idea will get shopped around and bought by more than one studio, and then from there the screenplay gets developed and built up. Armageddon and Deep Impact, Antz and Bug's Life, Despicable Me and Megamind, etc etc.

John Pwell's score was a stand-out part of the film to me. Still listen to that pretty often. The heroic themes and such paired well with the action sequences and more emotional moments. Outside of the army ants singing, it would work just as effectively if paired with a live action film.

Indeed, it's a common Hollywood trope. But there is an extra spicy layer when it comes to Disney and Dreamworks: and we can trace it back to Jeffrey Katzenberg.
Katzenberg, once a Disney executive (so invested in the company's work that he went and backstabbed a deal with Robin Williams to the point Williams swore never to work with Disney again), left the company angry after he didn't get a promotion he wanted.
Did he lay low and recover? No; he went, joined Dramworks and used some of the knowledge he had about coming productions to make full frontal war against Disney (to begin with). And then, he went on to openly mock Disney with another thing called Shrek...

I also enjoy ANTZ more,, but If you think it's a coincidence that these 2 movies have such similar ideas, go look up the history of how DreamWorks began as a company. It's a lot to explain in a comment, but long story short, both movies came from the same idea. Jeffrey Katzenberg was giving Disney/Pixar the middle finger with this movie. I believe he had either been fired or had a major falling out with them, but this movie was specifically targeted nonetheless.

I had issues with "A Bug's Life" cause some of the type of insects were missing some of their legs. The ants were all missing a pair of legs. Add onto that the fact that the size some of the bugs were not consistent with the size they probably should have been in comparison to each other or making the ants overly bright colors. So I preferred this because it felt like there were actually trying to do a story in the world of ants. Especially when you factor in the water fountain location or the picnic basket. It just felt like this movie cared more about trying to do a tail in a bug's life.

DreamWorks Pictures *ANTZ* was one of my Absolute childhood favorites since *A BUG’S LIFE* 🐜
I remembered that I used to watch both two Ant movies that are on DVD from my childhood when I was in Daycare & Pre-K for the first time!
Both of those to Ant movies came out in the same in 1998.
And that’s what I noticed about 1998 was a year for two ANT movies that are totally CG animation. One was Disney/Pixar. And one was DreamWorks Pictures or DreamWorks SKG before it was called *DreamWorks Animation.*

"Stealing ideas to make similar films must have gotten to Dreamworks, somehow..."
To an extent, you can give a name to that "somehow": Jeffrey Katzenberg, at the time an angry ex-Disney executive, out for payback. Some won't be familiar with his name, but while working at Disney he was responsible of several changes and bussiness moves that can be described as "purely evil" (for example, the move that pissed off Robin Williams after Aladdin was Katzenberg's doing).
Katzenberg, a creative force on his own (it can't be helped, the guy has good ideas and knows the bussiness), left Disney after a series of altercations that ended up with him not being appointed to a position that he wanted. What was his strategy after that? Working for competing studios to beat Disney's works every single time.
That's why (surprise, surprise) when Disney starts working on a 3D animated film mostly focused on ants, the company accross the street makes a similar film (with the intention to appeal to larger audiences; following partially a formula introduced by Katzenberg: use a star packed cast). The crown jewell of Katzenberg v. Disney would come later in a form that you already know and love: a project called Shrek.

Fun fact, for the latin version of both A bug's life and Antz, Hopper and General Mandible are played by the same voice actor.

I saw this in theaters and I definitely like this one more as an adult. The script is sooo much better than A Bug's Life. The penny joke had me rolling!

There is another ant movie called: The Ant Bully, it's from Warner Bros and I would say it would fit right along Antz and Bugs life. Please look it up and decide if you would want to watch it, I would love to see a video about that movie

A lot of the jokes in this movie aren’t really for children 😂. So, looking back on it now and hearing the jokes. It’s hilarious😂 I think it’s because the movie tries to be kid like but it is riddled with stuff that kids simply won’t understand. That’s just my opinion though.

Would recommend you wrap up the Bug trilogy with Bee Movie. It's nothing like the other two, it's more modern, a pure comedy and yet a completely different tone again. Good watch

I definitely like A Bug’s Life lot more but that’s just me. Such an underrated gem from Disney and Pixar! BTW, another underrated gem would be Over The Hedge which is another DreamWorks film. I recommend it if you guys did not see this film yet!
