Jen thinks she is familiar with Tarzan... I guarantee that is not the case. She probably thinks the Tarzan books were for kids... really, Jen should have read the first two Tarzan novels (all one story) before watching this to know what Disney changed and why a hundred years later, fans are still waiting for a faithful adaptation. Missed opportunity. I do love Minnie Driver's Jane, but of course the real Jane was a blonde from Baltimore. While I'm at it, you guys should have watched the original "King Kong" (1933).
May i remind you that Hunchback of Notre Dame was also "rated G" and a baby was nearly drowned in a well in the first 5 minutes, there's assault, murder, burning at the stake, abuse and much more in it. The late 90s was a wild time
All the films from the Disney renaissance, including Hunchback, Mulan and The Lion King, were given a G rating (and a U rating in the UK, which is basically the same thing). It's crazy that these films put so much insane intense stuff into their stories and still got slapped with that kind of low rating, while more modern Disney films get given PG ratings despite being much tamer in terms of content
@@christianwise637mmhmm. Arguably like Hunchback, and I've said this on many reactions should have a PG-13 rating or the equivalent, even for back then. It's not a kids film just because it's animated. It's a great film imo, just not for kids.
I'm from Germany and I think it's great that Phil Collins sang the songs in different languages for the different countries! Hear him sing in german was strange, but he did it very well!
Haven't seen that movie since I was a kid, so I don't remember the music that well, but I know Phil Collins sang in french for the Lion King so I guess he did it for Tarzan too. Pretty impressive 👍
Tarzan is quite underrated imo. And I love the classic British accents and dialogues. Clayton was a great antagonist, along with Sabor. Another underrated Disney classic I would recommend would be Atlantis: The Lost Empire. R.I.P. Harambe
I saw all the animated Disney movies from the 90s, except this one. I was 12 when it came out in 1999 and I guess I just wasn’t interested in seeing animated movies anymore. It came out the sametime Star Wars: The Phantom Menace came out
I just gotta say, "The Legend of Tarzan" animated follow up is RAD! It adapts the original Edgar Rice Burroughs stories and fits them into the movie and series tone, like it makes it so fun to see what Tarzan fights next. Plus they use the Phil Collins Two Worlds theme as the main theme, and every song goes hard!
I watched a lot of those animated series on Saturday Disney growing up. (Aussie's know.) Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Hercules, etc. Tarzan's was great. I enjoyed how it felt like Tarzan and Jane had an actual life after the events of the movie. But the one I feel holds up the best is Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. I've rewatched episodes of that as an adult, and they're honestly hilarious! A load of fun 😁
It's not mentioned in the movie but Tarzan's birth name is John Clayton II. The villain in the movie is his cousin William. This makes Tarzan a kinslayer.
Well, in the books his cousin is actually a pretty good dude with honest intentions. And Tarzan is a very intelligent individual who taught himself how to read far before Jane showed up using the books and journals his parents left behind.
@@Promatheos In some areas like that, the movie is more realistic, but in others, the book is more realistic. For example, in the book, the apes don't have human intelligence.
That’s honestly so sweet you sing that song to your son. Part of me can’t wait to be a dad some day just to be able to sing this to my kids 😊 Phil Collins just hits that hard

“This is supposed to be a children's movie” In fact it is, and I generally believe. That is to say, personally speaking, I who was born in '99 and grew up with these movies, cannot deny that I did suffer from the impact of several deaths that occurred at Disney but I never hated them, because there was always resilience and/or learning. At that age I didn't understand much about references or words but I flowed more from the feeling and emotion they generated in me, and I learned a lot from those movies that show you a certain reality of life compared to recent ones. On the other hand, I feel that they are films for all of us who carry our inner child, even adults enjoyed these films and continue to do so, Disney created children's films for all children and those who were children, something that I regret losing little by little… It was magnificent
I love the memes that showed up about Tarzan and Jane swinging on the vine at the end. Since he's carrying Jane with both arms, and the vine is behind them, Tarzan can only be gripping it with his buns of steel.
The reason why most of the characters and the tea pot all look like Beauty And The Beast characters is because the lead animator for this movie (Glen Keane) was also an animator on Beauty And The Beast.
Tarzan's tree surfing wasn't just inspired from Tony Hawk but Tarzan's main animator Glean Keane (who also animated The Beast from Beauty and the Beast, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, the title characters of Aladdin and Pocahontas and later did Captain Long John Silver in Treasure Planet) got inspiration from his son who at the time did skateboarding and snowboarding.
So here’s a fun fact for y’all. The neighborhood of Tarzana, California (which is somewhere in the Valley), is actually named for the character of Tarzan. Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote the Tarzan stories, established Tarzana, California, as his own personal ranch.

Id really like to see yall react to Brother Bear. Its another great Phil Collins Disney soundtrack. Also had a lot of animosity with my older brother when we were younger and we really bonded over it.
Kerchak is voiced by Lance Henriksen, who's best known for playing the android Bishop in Aliens and Alien 3 (as well as "Bishop 2", who's an actual human but still looks a lot like Bishop).
I don't normally comment, but i want to share my opinion. Love you both and these videos and so glad you're doing a video on this. This film holds a special place in my heart as some of my earliest memories of a child was watching this on VHS with my dad. Constantly, where the VHS broke. Sadly my dad is no longer with us, but this film is so special because it reminds me of him. And the meaning behind the excellent songs performed by Phil Collins also reminds me of him. Truly my favourite Disney film/film in general.
I hadn’t realized til you mentioned it how dark Tarzan really was for a G rated film. Clayton’s death was one thing, but on top of that, you saw the bodies of Tarzan’s parents not even 5 minutes after introducing them. Also love how you’re introducing all these Disney classics to Jen. I don’t know if she’s seen The Lion King, but that reaction would be priceless.
Rated G, my ass. Born in 94, I saw this in theaters and had to leave early after the leopard killed his parents. I was a mamas boy, had attachment issues and that was horrifying.
I can’t hear you’ll be in my heart without tearing up. I held my newborn daughter and watched this. She is now 24 and I have remarried and her and I danced to this song at my wedding
Hearing how much Jen loves gorillas...I was very eager to see how she would react to the first few minutes. Didn't disappoint! Also, people hype up Phil Collins a lot, which is more than deserved, but the overall score is phenomenal. Mark Mancina absolutely killed it. Personal favorite is "A Wondrous Place" when Tarzan is taking the group up to the gorillas after Kerchak is chasing the others away. Between the score and animation, it's textbook combination on how the score can so heavily complement. Freaking loved it.
As someone who studied animation and works in the industry, Tarzan's actual animation never fails to amaze me. How anatomically accurate the drawing to his body and movement was, and how meticulously detailed his animation was done is masterclass. So impressive!
Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan Lord of the apes (1984) starring Christopher Lambert, Andie McDowell and Ian Holm was my first introduction to the character of Tarzan, good movie “razor….mirror….”
Lance Hendrickson portrayed ''Kerchak'', Minnie Driver was ''Jane'', Nigel Hawthorne was ''Professor Porter'', Brian Blessed was ''Clayton''. The character of Clayton is ironic because, Tarzan's actual name is John Clayton, Lord Greystoke in the novel.
I liked this movie so much as a kid that for boredom relief my cousins would ask me to recite the ENTIRETY of the movie from memory...and I would happily oblige lol this was me and my moms special movie. To this day I can't hear You'll be in my Heart without getting a little choked up.
Watch Brother Bear (2003). It’s an animated Disney film that I think you would both enjoy. Very underrated and often forgotten about. Phil Collins also did the music for it.
This is my favorite of the Disney Renaissance movies, and always has been. Nostalgia is part of it, but as i get older, I only appreciate the technical and narrative aspects of it even more. To me, it was the most emotionally impactful, it has my favorite opening sequence, maybe there was a little too much Phil Collins, but the music fit really well. I still tear up during the seen where Kala shows Tarzan the tree house, and the mix of traditional and digital animation was absolutely beautiful.
One of the very best soundtracks of any Disney movie. Phil Collins really knocked it out of the park AND he sings in - I think - every single language the movie was released on. Impressive stiff!
They did an animated series based after the end of the film. It was your typical saturday morning cartoon series but it was good. More human characters came to the island and started modernising it somewhat, Clayton's sister was introduced trying to get revenge, dinosaurs, giant anaconda, the leopand people and other stuff. It was fun.
25:28 not in this or any of Disney’s other Tarzan products, no. However, Edgar Rice Burroughs does give Tarzan a son in some of the stories. In fact the third such story was literally called Son of Tarzan.
This is my favourite animation movie of all time. I just can never put into words how much this movie means to me. Forever thankful to glen keane & Phil collins for there work in this masterpiece movie.
I was just watching this a few days ago on Disney + but in Spanish. I grew up watching it on the VHS tape in English. It’s still a great movie to watch with anyone. What Disney fans notice is that some characters are modeled after the ones before them so it can be distracting at times
Also, a metric tonne of things were changed from Burroughs’ story for the film. For example, Sabor the leopard. Originally Sabor was a lion but lions don’t live in rainforests. Leopards do live in rainforests but have also adapted to living in the savanna and grasslands.
Would everybody PLEASE STOP labeling everything as “underrated!?” I don’t know why or when “underrated” became everybody’s favorite word, but people need to tone down the use of the word “underrated!” It’s annoying as hell!!
So glad you are checking this out!! I remember seeing this at a double feature drive in when I was about 5 and as I’ve gotten older appreciate it more especially Phil collins who Smacked the soundtrack out of the park.
My childhood comoletly. Grew up on the classic disney movies and often listen to the soundtracks well into being an adult. Having three kids now myself i passed on these movies to them and they know them all just as much as i do. Tarzan and Hercules were my two favorites and remain still to this day. Hercules should be next
It is wonderful to see you guys experiencing the Disney/Pixar world of animation. I hope that your journey will include "Coco" and "Brave". Brave puts a whole new spin on the Disney princess. Both fabulous and detailed animations with wonderful stories AND messages.
This is my ALL TIME favorite disney movie. Son of Man and Two Worlds One Family songs are def the best songs in all of Disney. Phil Collins goes soo hard in this movie
As far as I’m aware, Belle and Jane are technically related in a kinda unconfirmed theory way that some Disney peeps say is true 🤷♂️ Same as Tarzan being the young brother of Anna and Elsa, which the director of frozen confirmed as his kinda canon take on the story
I love how both "Tarzan yells" use the same notes but are harmonized differently, the first one changing and new at a pivotal moment of victory, the second one firmly on the tonic chord moving to a suspension and resolving back, to show finality.
This is, together with The Lion King, one Disney's absolute best, imo. They are not just "children's movies", they are so much more than that, hence the reason so many adults adore them, and often have so much more appreciation for them when watching them as adults, than they did when they were watching them as kids. The only thing separating animated movies from live action movies really, is that in animated movies the film makers can let their imagination run absolutely free, no live actors, sets, or real life physics to struggle with. 5:20 Yes, it's supposed to be a leopard, but it's kinda drawn like a cheetah for some reason. And black panthers do exist in Africa, they are just black leopards. Black panthers also exist in South America, but as jaguars. I guess there are black indian leopards as well. Speaking of black Panthers, go visit Luna the Pantera, the sweetest kitty cat there is, and her Rottweiler step sister Venza.
The final movie of the Disney Renaissance. Such a great film and unmatchable soundtrack. I remember seeing the trailer as a kid and the behind the scenes and this one was on a healthy repeat of many many Disney movies. If you want more Phil definitely check out Brother Bear. Super underrated. Great reaction as always!
I remember watching this with my dad in a movie theatre. The soundtrack blew me away. The action was great and the heart was there, too. Great experience.
As is tradition, if you liked the music in Tarzan, you should consider Brother Bear, which has lots of Phil Collins and similar themes on nature, belonging, family, responsibility, balance, empathy for those unlike you, and loss. Just as heart-wrenching at points, though, if not more so.
This is one of, if not THE first movies I ever watched. The score is phenomenal, the story is timeless. This movie has a very special place in my heart.
Funny that you reference beauty and the beast. There is a theory that some of the Disney characters are connected. Apparently Jane is the granddaughter or great granddaughter of belle since they have the similar color outfits, the tea cups, and her attraction to beast like men. Tarzan is actually the brother of Elsa and Anna. Their parents left on the ship that sunk and reportedly died but really they escaped and landed in Africa and had baby Tarzan during the voyage. The ship that sunk is the same ship in the little mermaid.
This movie is so good, and doesn't get as much recognition as the other Disney classics. This has the slickist 2D-3D comp in any animated movie I've seen.
I adore Tarzan, it's one of my favorite animated movies ever. I watched it way too many times when I was probably way too old to do so (13/14), but this was when my parents divorced and it was a source of solace... Love the music, the story, the animation and, one underrated aspect that wasn't mentioned, it was just how romantic it is. Tarzan and Jane as a couple just makes me happy. And of course I ecstatic when it was chosen as one of the worlds for the first Kingdom Hearts, even if it ended up being one of the most confusing to navigate.
this was made when I was born Holden and Jen plus it is one of my favorites as well also the love the legend of Tarzan series too . Phil Collins is a legend in this and brother bear love his music.
I have this movie and bought the soundtrack. I really love this movie and I believe Jen might like the TV series off camera. I enjoyed and it a little bit more into their lives after the movie.
My favorite Disney movie. One of the only Disney movies my dad would sit down and watch with me, plus you have the tarzan show that came after this that is A+
Have yall seen the memes with Tarzan swinging on the vines holding Jane with both hands…? And did you catch the cameo from Mrs. Potts when the gorillas discovered the camp?
They got the physics right for sure in the last part of the movie with Tarzan swinging with Jane, while holding her with both arms. Those cheeks of his are even solid strong, holding onto that vine while swinging

Two worlds, son of man, Stanger like me, and you'll be in my heart are all absolute bangers...and happy 3 month early 1st birthday to your baby boy!!!
They did an animated series based after the end of the film. It was your typical saturday morning cartoon series but it was good. More human characters came to the island and started modernising it somewhat, Clayton's sister was introduced trying to get revenge, dinosaurs, giant anaconda, the leopand people and other stuff. It was fun.
Also a leopard and a panther are the same thing panther is referring to big cats gene such as lions, tigers, and leopard
7:55 god this part of the PS1 video game is an absolute core memory
Don’t be ashamed to sing You’ll be in My Heart Holden. I sang Son of Man and Carry On Wayward Son when my son was first born!
Also, a metric tonne of things were changed from Burroughs’ story for the film. For example, Sabor the leopard. Originally Sabor was a lion but lions don’t live in rainforests. Leopards do live in rainforests but have also adapted to living in the savanna and grasslands.
Tarzan does get his own TV show as well as a prequel. Both have likely forgotten by now.
Such a highly UNDERRATED Disney classic! The animation, the music its all just fantastic!
Would everybody PLEASE STOP labeling everything as “underrated!?” I don’t know why or when “underrated” became everybody’s favorite word, but people need to tone down the use of the word “underrated!” It’s annoying as hell!!
They also had the "Tarzan & Jane" movie AND cartoon, as well as, "Tarzan 2"😇
So glad you are checking this out!! I remember seeing this at a double feature drive in when I was about 5 and as I’ve gotten older appreciate it more especially Phil collins who Smacked the soundtrack out of the park.
My childhood comoletly. Grew up on the classic disney movies and often listen to the soundtracks well into being an adult. Having three kids now myself i passed on these movies to them and they know them all just as much as i do. Tarzan and Hercules were my two favorites and remain still to this day. Hercules should be next
26:11 “ love, transcending any species” as Boston side eyes 👀 you in the background
It is wonderful to see you guys experiencing the Disney/Pixar world of animation. I hope that your journey will include "Coco" and "Brave". Brave puts a whole new spin on the Disney princess. Both fabulous and detailed animations with wonderful stories AND messages.
Holden & Jen Hardman, Subscribed because your videos are always awesome!
This is my ALL TIME favorite disney movie. Son of Man and Two Worlds One Family songs are def the best songs in all of Disney. Phil Collins goes soo hard in this movie
All-time childhood classic. Phil Collins made himself memorable forever with this film.
As far as I’m aware, Belle and Jane are technically related in a kinda unconfirmed theory way that some Disney peeps say is true 🤷♂️
Same as Tarzan being the young brother of Anna and Elsa, which the director of frozen confirmed as his kinda canon take on the story
Holden I agree with you Claytons death traumatized as a kid too also Ursalas , Scars as well.
I love how both "Tarzan yells" use the same notes but are harmonized differently, the first one changing and new at a pivotal moment of victory, the second one firmly on the tonic chord moving to a suspension and resolving back, to show finality.
The animated series follow up is still great if you guys want to check it out on your own time. Still one of my favorite Disney shows.
The scene in which she names the baby Tarzan is a great tribute to Bambi. It's almost line for line.
I always wonder if Tarzan was ever told that Sabor was the one that killed his real family
My mother used to sing "You'll be in my Heart" to me when I was little. It warms my heart so much that Holden does the same for his son.
Unfortunately, Elsa and Anna’s parents are dead in frozen 2, if you remember what happened to them in the hurricane 🌀 of 🌊.
It’s been confirmed by Disney that is not true. It’s been debunked.
My all time favorite Disney movie. The phil collins soundtrack alone makes it legendary
This movie is so good, and doesn't get as much recognition as the other Disney classics. This has the slickist 2D-3D comp in any animated movie I've seen.
You guys should watch Brother Bear. Absolutely loved that film growing up and it is full of more Phil Collins bangers
Tarzan is awesome, his holding up the leopards body and his icon yell. And the music is amazing, Phil Collins did an amazing job with it.
I think it’s absolutely adorable that you sing that song to your son ☺️
I read through all the original Edgar Rice Burroughs books and am happy to say that this is an underrated classic!😊
this was made when I was born Holden and Jen plus it is one of my favorites as well also the love the legend of Tarzan series too . Phil Collins is a legend in this and brother bear love his music.
This was and is still my favourite Disney movie. Mulan is a close second but this one just hits all the right spots.
I have this movie and bought the soundtrack. I really love this movie and I believe Jen might like the TV series off camera. I enjoyed and it a little bit more into their lives after the movie.
Funny I just watched the musical yesterday with my Mom (it was her Birthday) and thought I needed to rewatch the Movie
I swear the amount of movies I’ve know seen Jen see, she cares wayyy more about animal lives than human lives 😂.
Animals >>> humans , sorry not sorry 🖕🏼
Never watched Tarzan but as a Phill Collins fan, it's collaboration has me interested to watch it, SO gonna be back... After watching the movie
My favorite Disney movie. One of the only Disney movies my dad would sit down and watch with me, plus you have the tarzan show that came after this that is A+
This movie is the peak of Disney 2D animation before 3D took over.
One of my absolute favorites as a kid
Tarzan was actually animated by Glen Keane; the same animator who did the Beast.
Those cheeks of his are even solid strong, holding onto that vine while swinging
grew up watching it and love it all
