    Hi: Just a small correction. The size of your blueberry plants depend mostly on the variety. I have varieties that grow 3-4 ft and others that grow 10 feet. Also you should ensure both varieties produce fruits in the same period since there are early, mid-season, late, and anything between.

      Its a good point to understand the Highbush, Lowbush, and Rabbiteye are all different plants based upon your region. After looking at compatible bloom times, its real confusing to select varieties for a continued harvest; consideration of a late frost/early spring can drop the flowers. Getting some Hanska bushes to compliment blueberries.

    Thanks for the blueberry tips. I planted blueberries about 6 years ago (zone 6b neutral soil) and 2-3 varities for this area PNW in E. Wa. I added sulfur like directions indicated and they either died or didn't do anything for a few years until I quit adding sulfur and last 2 years have been getting good crops. I always add peat moss as our soil is from old river silt (hard like clay when dry) so it must have dropped the PH too low for a few years. I haven't been fertilizing them enough either as all I have is dry fert and only added that at planting time or in early spring so I need to get some liquid fert also. Hoping for a larger crop next year!

    Years ago, I used MirAcid. They no longer make it. MiracleGro for rhododendrons or Hollytone works. You can also dust the ground with sulphur or add some white vinegar to your water to help lower the pH. New to blueberries, but very familiar with dawn redwoods, so I'm used to lowering soil pH.

      I would really appreciate a revised video that compiles the things that Gary said he learned in the comment section in relation to growing blueberries, because I think there is some stuff in this video that could be improved (in terms of advice and accessibility).
      Some people were saying he was providing info that can be inaccurate and misleading... I'm just trying to get all the perspectives.
      I'm trying to plant a new blueberry plant for the first time, so Iearning that there is some conflict with the information is concerning, and together it all makes learning even more overwhelming. I like Gary's channel, but I also want to make sure I'm getting the right info.
      Also, the background noise is definitely a distraction from the content of this video, as some people pointed out. I don't know if this is a problem in every video but I think there are probably editing tools for that.

    When in doubt, your soil is probably not acidic enough. I struggled with my blueberries for years, assuming my soil was acidic enough with the peat. It wasn't.
    For the record, I planted my plants in 2:1:1 peat sand and worm castings. When I began to notice issues I switched to watering with exclusively fresh brewed coffee (leftovers from the office at the end of the day), and that still wasn't enough. Three years later I started using a soil acidifier and they're finally putting out sturdy growth and fruiting readily. The brand I'm using is epsoma.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 лет назад

      So that is why I added the liquid feed that is acidic. Would you recommend the epsoma in addition?

    • @donlourie769
      @donlourie769 4 года назад +2

      Sulfur will acidify the soil but it also kills the fungi that blueberries need to get nutrients. Blueberry plants do not have root hairs and depend on ericoid mycorrhyzae to get nutrients. Feed the soil to encourage soil bacteria and these little critters will help feed the fungi which feed the plants.

    Hi Gary! Do these rules apply to blackberry bushes as well? My grandfather gave me a bush this past summer and I blindedly planted in untreated soil along the side of my house. Barely any sun! So I'm thinking of digging it up in hopes of finding a better spot. Any tips or tricks? I really appreciate your time you're such a busy person with all that you do.

    Hi Gary I planted several blueberry plants around 3 years ago and I’m seeing very little harvests if any. I believe after watching your video that my issue is the soil that we used. Is it possible for me to just add in your recommendations and expect to see better results for my plants or would I need to replant them? Thank you for your help!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      In theory you dont have to wait. You might want to pot them in to gallon pots and bring them in if hard freezes come by. If they have been sitting around where it is warm for a while the foliage will get damaged in a frost. They have to toughen up to the elements. However, the roots will be fine if you plant them outside.

      Not really. I am sure there is a couple combos that arent the most effective but I wouldnt worry about it. Just 2 different varieties

    Is there any herbicide which doesn't affect your plants, only the weeds?

    According to a blueberry producer he says you dont want a nitrogen based soil and he says 50% wood chips and peat moss, along with sulfur...

      Interesting. I dont really feed them too much but for the set up. I wonder how much nitrogen is too much?

    Hi!! Is your garden organic? Is the miracle grow organic?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Год назад

      It is organic but I will use a chemical type fertilizer now and again. Mostly compost. I think it is silly to be '100%' something or you're not. Chemical fertilizers used in a target way, do no harm. It's just an argument point. They key is tons of compost.

    The plant i bought recomended that you put the plant in water and soak it for couple of hour till roots are exposed, then prepare the hole and planted not too deep. I don't see you doing that.

      Look for end of season sales at the big stores. That wont help now but you can plant a forest at 1/3 of the price and the do really well establishing for the fall and winter.

      I bought one blueberry plant because I didn't do any research ahead of time. Now I'm worried it will die if I stick it in the ground without any acidity in the soil. I also have no clue what acidity it is in. I live in Kansas zone 6 I think.

      @@shelmmii9425 just designate a decent sized pot for it, much easier to control the PH when it's in a container and stays moveable
