I am really enjoying this series Jake. After 35 years of playing rock and country dance music all over the USA, including hotel circuits, casinos, cruise ships etc. I'd like to do some laid back cocktail gigs myself.

    Hey Jake,
As you know I'm a long time listener/player....This is one of THE most impactful ideas to me...I'm glad you often refer to this throughout your material...I will listen repeatedly and not get tired of it....I'd never heard anyone so meaningfully "narrow it all down", with this infinitely useful concept.
I highly encourage all to learn from you. I've found the benefits are on a highly practical level and also a higher conceptual level. The ideas can greatly enhance your own personal musical experience...I'm re-energized and now look for the occasional gig whether professional or just casual. MORE LIVE MUSIC!!!

cool video - figuring out how to hear for syncopated notes in the melody is definitely an extremely important step and something that I eventually figured out on my own, but I wish I had seen a lesson like this years ago that could have sped me up in that development.

Excellent. I have been working on this technique a bit (you can't have too many approaches to solo!), and I recently stumbled onto that syncopation idea that you explained - huge difference!. Thanks so much. The other thing I have problems with is improv. I could improv if someone was comping (or playing bass), but it seems vastly different than the arrangement that I would play for the head. Thanks!

This was exactly the method taught to me in my early jazz piano lessons. Just learn to play the single note melody in the right hand and a solid proper bass note with good time in the left hand. If you can do that all the way through the tune, you are well on your way to learning how to play solo.

Excellent approach with bass and melody as the guideposts in this lovely lyrical tune! Nice way to integrate a contemporary approach to popular music.
