I learnt to sail watching the America’s Cup on TV. Firstly in 1987 then I watched the next 2. In 2000 I bought a sailboat and sailed from New Zealand to the UK. Where I still am and planning my sail home again!! Probably the longest circumnavigation ever!!! 😛🤪😜🇳🇿
there is a lot of negative posts here don't worry about them, like everything in life you never stop learning you did ok for your first sail you will get better the more you go out and you have a great boat ! smooth seas & fair winds cheers Andy
I know this video is about 5 years old. Looks like you're on a Youngsun 35. I've owned a sister-ship since 2013. She was built in 1981. Sailed her down the west coast from Seattle to the Sea of Cortez in the fall of 2016. Went through storms that made your squall seem like a light summer sprinkle. Not casting shade, just letting you know that a Youngsun is an excellent boat! While we were in horrendous conditions twice, hove-to for over 2 days each time, and our nerves on the very edge of sanity (hurricane strength winds howling through the rigging for 2 days can get on your nerves!), the boat did great, rising to every steep wave and swell like a laid-back swan! I have since ripped off the teak decking and painted with non-skid - makes for a much cooler deck and interior. When we pulled the teak (I did not have deck leaks) we found that the decking beneath was in superb condition, it is a parqueted layer (4"X4" squares) of marine plywood, sandwiched between two 1/4" layers of fiberglass/epoxy. Youngsuns are strong, easy-riding boats - slow, but comfy! Hope you are enjoying the dream!
I just found this channel. That's a nice looking boat, Brandon. And well done for coming back for more after a storm on your first sail. Many people get discouraged. I remember, when I was 18, sailing a 14' dinghy in a club race, with a potential girlfriend as crew, when a storm went through. The wind was around 35kts and we were flying. Monster planing on the reaches. Howling wind and feathering like mad upwind. Brilliant! She complained that the rain was hurting her face, so, being a chivalrous sort of guy, I suggested that she took shelter behind me. When that didn't work, I suggested that she could put the baling bucket over her head. That solved the problem. I don't know why, but she never went sailing with me again. We did win the race.
I’ve always wondered when I see dogs on a boat where do they go to the bathroom when out at sea ?? Do you have a area where they go and must start to smell and the pee must leave stains ? Believe it or not this stops me from wanting to buy and sail for a year because my golden is my best friend and wouldn’t want to mess with his life and wouldn’t want to ruin a boat
Marty, I've really taken a liking to that Sailboat Story family. They're a bit weirder than most channels, but there's just something about them that makes them a favorite of mine. ;) Ha - Just messing around (as usual). Great video, lovely boat, and many memorable adventures to come for these guys!
wow, nice ride. Nice going to both of you for getting way out of your comfort zone. I admire you and encourage you to keep doing it until the fun is gone. God Bless
Good for you mate in having the guts to follow your dreams. Riley and Alayna have inspired so many people to follow their dreams, including me. I am looking forward buying my own 36' Adams Traditional before he end of the year and hitting the blue water. I live on the East coast of Australia and intend sailing to Indonesia for my first trip. Keep safe you guys and continue pursing your dreams. Greetings from Sydney.
Really nice that you told us in your description what your boat was. Very nice boats too. Please be careful out there the sea is nothing to mess with, and not knowing the rules of the road not only endangers your life but the lives of others. I am an experienced waterman for all of my life, and have seen a lot of mistakes made that put others lives in danger. Here is one bit of advice I will give you; when anchoring, after you've dropped the hook, let out the appropriate scope, and snubbed off the rode, go back to your engine controls, put the boat in reverse and back up until you fell the anchor "dig in" to the bottom. They don't just set by dropping it! If a squall comes up and you drag anchor you can not only lose your boat, but you could take someone else's with you. Happy cruising! Peace
I lived in Florida nearly all my life, and as much as a water person I am sailing seems so scary to me even though I think it would be my dream life. You brave soul
For a first sail and first video you've done well. I agree that La Vagabonde is an inspiration. I hope you've learned from them that there's a lot to learn. It'll be interesting see you learn the ropes so keep posting your videos!
I salute you on a Job well done!! I saw your boat, I guess it was the first time you went to work on it. You've done just a beautiful job!! I am impressed. That wasn't a small job. I also started watching LA Vagabonde about a year ago I think. Haven't been as brave as you, guess I'll have to give it a try! Congratulations on the maiden voyage, now I guess it's through the canal and to the great south pacific! I hope I see you there. Just reading some entries here, lot of negative people out there. Riley and Elayna are living a life most all of us wish we had and only a few have the balls to reach out and do it. You know which one you are, don't even answer those negative folks! Soon you'll have your own loyal following!! Good luck to ya!!
Awesome job man! Glad to see I am not the only crazy one who buys a sail boat with out the knowledge on how to use it :) In the last two weeks I purchased a 37 ALBERG MK II YAWL and I have never been on a sailboat before lol. Just felt it was something I had to get up and do. I too follow SV La Vagabonde, wicked salty, sailing nervously etc and just had to stop wanting to and start doing. Ignore negative comments, there are a lot of people whose idea of doing is cruising the waterways of RUclips judging others lol. I hope you will post more on sailing.
Loving the John Prine, "I aint a hurting nobody" song playing in the background at 3:42. There is a somewhat tired 1979 Young Sun 35' for sail in my local marina. I'm two months from being able to retire and looking for a mid-life adventure ;)
Mate its good to see you are out there with the La Vag inspo! I want to do the same and I am putting it out to the universe to show me the way!!. That boat was beautiful and I I would be inspired if you were to buy it and set sail for yourself- the sun and the attractiveness will come. Come-on mate are you serious about this or what and as radical as Riley!!
Brandon, you are obviously the adventurous type, welcome to the world of sailing. One thing I would like to point out is your reference to Sailing La Vagabond, kudos to Riley and Elayna, they are producing interesting and entertaining content, and they are doing it very well as shown by their following. What needs to be realized is that they have gotten this far more by luck, and personality than by seamanship. Don’t get me wrong, they are learning and realize that they still have a lot to learn. Still, some of the ‘habits’ they have kept especially where safety is concerned leaves a lot to be desired. What I am saying is that as an inspiration, they are hard to beat, as a how to cruise, not so much. There is a plethora of videos and reference material out there, look at as much as you can and take heed of the best of what you see. All the best to you, Riley, and Elayna, keep on sailing. The adventure is unlimited.
Center the main sail boom and secure before raising sail. Once clear of marina you can raise main. If aug. quits you have a sail option. Practice putting up sails at dock. Good luck, this will come around.
nice vid. congrats on your maiden sail. just a tip tho: best to not bag the sails until safely back at dock in case your engine conks and you need to deploy sails quickly....
Edward Lahr You know, I'm with you on learning them, but it's more important in my opinion that everyone is speaking the same language, especially when there is the possibility of grounding: when I have time I'll teach, but when I'm headed for a subsurface rock with a new person at the tiller (who is still getting used to pulling the tiller opposite direction) I'll say left or right: It's important not to get too hung up on salty talk to the detriment of safety. Also, many people on RUclips will understand that better than Port and Starboard. Back and front, left and right, rope, wheel, kitchen, washroom, bedroom, we all know what is meant…this isn't an instructional video, and he's not sailing professionally.
Good for you. You look like you'll do great. I too am a fan of SLV . I a while away from buying my boat but am sure I'll have an easy time like you. I will be doing lake sailing not ocean and I won't be crossing a lake let alone an ocean so my skill doesn't have to be as good as yours! good luck and stay safe!
Haha... yeah it was not that abrasive in real life. I didn't even notice it until editing the video then I just thought it was funny. Thanks for watching!
Great first video, although you could be a little more animated when talking to the camera. Remember, the first part of any cruise whether it be across an ocean or just a 3 hour cruise (Gilligan) is planning which always starts with weather. Safety of the crew is the Captains responsibility! But you got home in one piece and that's a good thing, means you didn't panic or at least you didn't show it on the video! I look forward to your next video! Eagerly!! Good Luck and God Bless! Bill S.
@7:49 "We put the sails down and headed back in" You could've just kept going out into the Caribbean and started your own around the world adventure! :)
Good on ya mate! Seems your getting some instruction, that's good. How about the process of selecting a boat and what it took to inspect before purchase, and like 4speedfunk said, more info on the boat and equipment. :-)
The captain was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot. There will be more sailing in my future. The description has been updated with boat specs. Thanks for watching!
The captain was a friend of my mom in Florida, so there was no cost. It would be worth whatever the cost of a charter is, definitely a great experience.
Congratulations on your boat, MaxRules99 !! I hope you will continue to sail and cruise and have a wonderful experience. It sound like there was a lot of whining and nagging from the female on board. I couldn't take that if I wanted a peaceful and contented voyage. This petulance will cause you much unnecessary stress. Otherwise, all the best and I hope you can make your dream come true and have a marvellous time in your cruising around !
Getting there again, I'm doing a ASA sailing class next week and have plans for sailing this winter. An update video is in the works as soon as things start coming together. Thanks for watching!
So cool dude!!! Dont pay attention to the idiot haters here. I am in your shoes right now. I have never been on a sailboat but want to join the sailing lifestyle.

Very pretty boat. Fair winds and following seas!
One of the best cruising boats ever made mate. Good on you from Tasmania
very nice, this is the begging of your great adventure - don't give up

That's a sweet boat! good choice, thanks for the video
Dont listlen to haters live your dream homie keep the vids coming. Cheers!

Always check the weather before starting out, Knowing wave conditions, etc... Is a good thing!
Ha - thats awesome you jumped right in. I watch that show but have not taken the plunge yet! go for it
Good on ya, dood. The 1,000 mile journey begins with the first step. Fair winds.
Lived aboard a 26' sailboat for 15 years ... with a wife ... and a dog. This ain't rocket surgery. Enjoy your adventure. And, as always, fair winds.
rocket... surgury?
I’ve always wondered when I see dogs on a boat where do they go to the bathroom when out at sea ?? Do you have a area where they go and must start to smell and the pee must leave stains ? Believe it or not this stops me from wanting to buy and sail for a year because my golden is my best friend and wouldn’t want to mess with his life and wouldn’t want to ruin a boat
You need to watch Delos, I like LaVag too, but the guys in Delos have been doing it a lot longer.
I do enjoy Delos, they are probably the most adventurous of all sailing channels. There is just something about LaVagaBonde that sets them apart.
Marty, I've really taken a liking to that Sailboat Story family. They're a bit weirder than most channels, but there's just something about them that makes them a favorite of mine. ;)
Ha - Just messing around (as usual).
Great video, lovely boat, and many memorable adventures to come for these guys!
Yeah. Its that perfect fucking 10 prancing around on that boat. ;)
Check out Sail Surf Roam. Group started out as 3 and are now 4. 48 foot cat out of Tasmania. Mike and his family built the boat themselves.
All good recommended YT channels mentioned here, no coincidence I watch them all.
wow, nice ride. Nice going to both of you for getting way out of your comfort zone. I admire you and encourage you to keep doing it until the fun is gone. God Bless

Beautiful Boat! Congratulations
Beautiful sailboat you have buddy! CONGRATS! Have fun, be safe, and Godspeed!!~John
perhaps next time you can give us the tour of the cabin..good luck and safe travels
Love the look of your yacht. Would be nice to see some interior shots.
Nicely filmed. A fun video to watch.
Loving the John Prine, "I aint a hurting nobody" song playing in the background at 3:42. There is a somewhat tired 1979 Young Sun 35' for sail in my local marina. I'm two months from being able to retire and looking for a mid-life adventure ;)
great video. have fun and don't go to far until you have lots of experience.

Congratulations, good luck!
Good job, way to go!
That is so cool.
nice boat and nice video
Good start.
I commend you on your choice of sailboat to go out sailing on. Looks like you got a good exposure to quite a bit of what you have to contend with.
If you have a dream - live it - you only live once!
nice vid. congrats on your maiden sail. just a tip tho: best to not bag the sails until safely back at dock in case your engine conks and you need to deploy sails quickly....
Yes, sound advice. Also learn simple nautical terms like port and starboard.
Nice boat!
Nice vid. Hope to be in that situation sometime next year. Plan on taking a sail course first.
OMG, that voice will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Very nice boat indeed
Sailing SV Delos is the best channel on youtube
You are more patient than me.I could not abide that harping voice in the background.
Haha... yeah it was not that abrasive in real life. I didn't even notice it until editing the video then I just thought it was funny. Thanks for watching!
Good job!
Good looking boat. What is it ? I'm sure you mentioned it. It's too early to go looking.
Great first video, although you could be a little more animated when talking to the camera. Thanks for watching. Being on camera is a certainly a learned skill. I have more coming up from St. Croix USVI soon.
OMG is that his mother teaching him how to run his boat?
i envy you dude, some day ill reach your point. hopefully sooner rather than later! haha keep up the good work!
Good job 👍🏼
Thank for sharing Really fun. I hope you get to do more sailing. Do you live near the water or only while on vacation?
This one was just a vacation. I'm mostly into off-roading but will be on the ocean more in the future. Thanks for watching!
LOL that storm...bapitism by fire
Nice video Passion Voile
very cool
@7:49 "We put the sails down and headed back in"
You could've just kept going out into the Caribbean and started your own around the world adventure!
:)
Nice boat
Keep her up!
Nice video. You didn't show off the boat: what it is, how many feet, and no video of the inside of the boat. I would really like to see the cockpit..
Boat details are in the description
Good on ya mate! Seems your getting some instruction, that's good. How about the process of selecting a boat and what it took to inspect before purchase, and like 4speedfunk said, more info on the boat and equipment. :-)
The captain was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot. There will be more sailing in my future. The description has been updated with boat specs. Thanks for watching!
Who was your captain and what was the cost of the charter? I would like to take my family out for a La Vagabond inspired sail.
The captain was a friend of my mom in Florida, so there was no cost. It would be worth whatever the cost of a charter is, definitely a great experience.
There's wasn't storm , just regular rainy weather.
Kris Krajewski Waterspouts…I think it qualifies.
Who was that nagging you in the background? OMG
I had to quit this vid after about a minute. I couldn't take it anymore....
I had to skip half the video cos of that lol. but the dude is super chill and great to listen to
damn dude you are 10 miles away from me
awesome
"We can't hit that red thing" - wonderful
Congratulations on your boat, MaxRules99 !! I hope you will continue to sail and cruise and have a wonderful experience. It sound like there was a lot of whining and nagging from the female on board. I couldn't take that if I wanted a peaceful and contented voyage. This petulance will cause you much unnecessary stress. Otherwise, all the best and I hope you can make your dream come true and have a marvellous time in your cruising around !
Are you still sailing? Your channel doesn’t have new sailing videos.
Getting there again, I'm doing a ASA sailing class next week and have plans for sailing this winter. An update video is in the works as soon as things start coming together. Thanks for watching!
be safe stay near shore
nice boat..
dude how come you never showed your mom?
I'll come back and visit you when your vids are a bit more polished!
how rude dude
No more videos? Is this your last time sailing too?
I just got back from a short sail around St Croix, USVI. I'm putting the video together now, it's part of a series from the USVI. Thanks for watching!
I to watch Riley in Helena would love to get out there and do this
So cool dude!!! Dont pay attention to the idiot haters here. I am in your shoes right now. I have never been on a sailboat but want to join the sailing lifestyle.
Doesn't the Coast Guard require new boaters to take a course?
Is that a 35ft. HansChristan?
Red right returning.
Andreas Duess Red Port Left for anywhere not S.K., Jap., Phil., USA, Canada: on the ICW red is inland…or you can just look at the chart, since the colors are all marked 😜
Andreas Duess Chart? What's that? All I need is this picture of the little boat on the computer!
Looks like a Hans Christian....is it yours or a charter?
It's a friend's West Wind. A purchase is always on my mind though...
U're lucky man!
Wow!
hi great video welcoem to the world of sailing. by the way we are right accross the river from you maybe we can meet up some time
awesome that you took the plunge.. i piece of advice, lose the shoes and socks whilst on board :)
Superform A sailing deck can be a dangerous place. You keep the shoes on underway.
