How long does it take some of this to truly compost down to a usable point for the garden? We have goats and have a pile JUST like this. Straw mixed with wasted orchard grass, and some chicken pine shavings. I haven’t used it for compost yet, I just keep piling it up as I clean the barn/shed.

Sounds like a short somewhere, wires getting crossed and the wrong signal. Good luck

Depends on the climate and how its composted. If you get the mixture ratio's correct, turn it, and stack it properly it can take at least a few months. A neighbor just spread his horse bedding out in a meadow over 20 years ago and it still looks mostly like straw.

Have you ever considered using the horse pellets? Unbelievable absorbing urine. I’m trying to decide the easiest solution.

We tried the pellets and we tried pine flake and they just don’t really seem any better. The pellets seemed expensive for what they were. Honestly this year we only had the does in the barn for like a couple days and then they and their babies joined a nursery pen with other does and babies. It worked out awesome!!!

My experience is that straw is better than hay when it comes to urine. Otherwise I would prefer hay because it is better to throw in the other fields.

Straw will make more dry and warm.... Maybe

Ultimately it’s easier to clean up. And seems cheaper.
