    I think caster might be similar to rake angle in a motorcycle. That helps me understand the concept better.

    I remember changing the struts out on a Toyota and forgot to mark them before removing. Alignment was so far out, the guy at the alignment shop wasnt too happy about that 🤣 Gave him more work I guess.
    PS- loved the Bicycle analogy, great way to explain that positive caster 👍

    For some reason, American autos used negative caster way back. I noticed this in the 60's because the front wheels would look like they are laying down towards the outside when turning. I noticed the difference when I saw German cars turn.

    Why bother to have positive castor for the front steered wheels? To increase camber angle with increase of steering angle to aid cornering performance, as well as provide self centering steering via literally jacking up the front end of the vehicle as the steering is turned.

    i noticed on my front wheels they are both positive but the driver side has more positive caster than the passenger. it's slanted more towards the steering wheel. also I have a question about the rear wheels. How can I center my rear wheels in the wheel wells. I noticed my rear tires are not centered like most cars and some models just like mine. they are shifted off center towards the front of the car so the gap between the tire and fender is almost half what it is at the back. I want to put a larger tire but cant bcuz it hits the fender on the rear door side.

    Great video. The Caster on my 2021 RAV4 is out. It measures 3.8 and should be between 4.2-5.7. Is this considered out by a little or alot?
    What is likely damaged? Strut? Control arm? Other? How would a mechanic go about figuring out what is causing the caster to be out?

    I just had my 4runner lifted and new wheels/ tires. Had an alignment and camber adjusted but it’s still a TAD negative and by a tad it’s almost unnoticeable. But being that it’s not exactly 0° is that an issue at all?

  • @Roberta_Esposito
    @Roberta_Esposito 8 месяцев назад

    also, it’s important to understand why it’s so easy to go out of control, backing up at high-speed because your caster angle is in reverse

    Looks like that Honda took more of a front end hit than my
    04 corolla . The steering fights a little bit at highway speed .
    I guess that is a symptom of not enough positive caster

    • @4G12
      @4G12 Год назад

      Would be a good idea if your rear axle steers in the opposite direction of your front axle, but terrible if they're steered in the same direction. Wheels that increase positive camber with increase of steering angle are not conducive to cornering well.

    There isn’t any such thing as "self aligning torque". Why was negative castor popular from the 50's and earlier? Why does the steering wheel come back on it's own? There is only one spec for front end alignment. What is it?
