  • We start on the platform at Carlisle where 37413 is present in its new all grey livery. A couple of 87s pass on steel coils before we board our class 108 for all stations stop and 85-mile ride to Barrow. 16 signal boxes are recorded as well as numerous semaphore signal gantries; most of which have been removed. A rather bumpy ride recorded through a dirty window and a VHS camera which didn't have " steady shot" So much infrastructure has disappeared I thought it was worth downloading for you to watch.VHS tape no. 50

Takes me back to my childhood this. I grew up in Barrow in Furness but only rode the line North of there the once when operated by class 108s!

Thanks, little did I realise 33 years ago I could share my day out with so many enthusiasts. Now I wish I'd taken more clips

@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways I'm from that part of Cumbria + used to travel this line all the time in the 80's early 90's. Its great to see the old sights such as Workington Steelworks which is now demolished.

Amazing video! I live on the Cumbrian Coastline & never imagined just how much has been taken away around the railways in this time.
PS i think the train in the video is a class 108 if it was the same 1 displaying Whitehaven on the blind & at the end.

After experiencing antisocial behaviour on a Millom train in 1996 from ticketless kids I thought twice about going through Barrow again. In doing that I missed out on Workington steelworks.

I must come up there again soon. It's quite a long way from the Vale of Glamorgan though ( 350 miles+)

A nice recording there! I never ventured that line back then. Interesting to note 37413 there, rare shots, indeed straight out of Springburn works on test after overhaul in her somewhat non-standard triple-grey livery, having no Railfreight logo's applied yet (when she did get them they were at the wrong ends because of the position of nameplates, as was the case with many ETH 37/4 at the time). Also she had non-standard grey cabside window surrounds, white data panels and the ZH curved number 7's! An interesting machine!! Cant wait to see the 31405 upload, cheers.

Thanks for your support; I'm just so pleased I kept my original VHS tapes now that I can use a newer VHS player in 2021.

@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways Yes its great all our recordings can be shared this way decades later by technology. Used to see so many spotters recording back then, there must and will be plenty to look at. Great for research too! . . . I cant get enough lol, even if my ex girlfriend was a loco driver (i can now share her vids hehe blimey), i'm forever stuck in the BR the era!! Keep up the good work sir, thankyou.

Currock has gone as well as Workington Moss Bay and Corkickle. Check out the 15 min speedrun video with the shoegazing soundtrack.
