Born in '72, I must confess, that I burried at least half of this catalogue in the sandbox in my granny's garden, but believe me, I still know exactly every detail on those cars and how they felt between my fingers! Thanx for uploading, it's really like a reunion with some really good old friends.
The Year is 1978, here's Paul, I'm 12 years old and standing in front of the local toy shop.... Well, actually it's 44 years later, "little Paul" is 56 years old and sitting in his comfy armchair. 😜 The Matchbox Marathon... An hour of die-cast dreams...😜 I could write something about all the models, but then I would (probably) need a new typing finger 🤣 So I picked out a few of the beauties.... Let's give it a go (6:36) Golf Mk I Such a familiar sight... Great showcase Tyrone that's basically my childhood right there I have pretty much every piece I'm getting there slowly just going through them now replacing the play warm for the better examples👍👍
Excellent video - quite therapeutic! Reassuring you have the same struggle as me. Too many unused things ‘just in case’? Never the right sized box! The one thing I got caught out lacking a couple of times in my early van life was a towing electrics ‘reset tool’. A couple of times I spent ages on the floor hitched up ready to leave, but found the electric coupling had slipped out of alignment, lots of jabbing and fiddling with makeshift tools. Reset tool bought, never leave home without it!
@@buildingtheultimatematchbo257 Sorry man, I posted the wrong comment on your video. This was relating to someone reorganising their camper’s storage locker! Haha! What I should say is that on this 1978 haul I’m seeing some familiar models that I’m rediscovering as I trawl through my childhood collection. Great work! I’ll stay tuned. :)
@@christianluffThis explains why I didn’t completely grasp the reference to clutter but without going back and watching the video, I figured I’d mentioned it at some point 😂 Thanks for checking out my channel, Christian! 👍
Getting close to 60 I sometimes wonder what will happen with My collection after I'm gone, but You are absolutely right , what would I care , I won't be here anyway !! Top video and top comments as always! Thx ! 👌👌
My son and me watched this comprehensive review over two sittings as it run past his bedtime ;-) Thoroughly entertaining escapism seeing which we have between us and those that continue to evade us thus far😅 BTW I have that Transit in an off yellow, just missing the luggage casing!
I’ve tip toed around this comment until now it is the last remaining one to reply to. It’s a great privilege to be part of you and your son’s hobby, @pddolan. The idea that a lot of people might actually watch my videos hasn’t made me nervous in a long time but reading that more than a single viewer is in the audience has somehow made me so. Finding all of the castings in the 1978 catalogue seemed a little extreme even for a Matchbox fanatic like me. But what a wonderful distraction and completely harmless endeavour. I hope you both enjoy the thrill of the hunt for many years to come. 🕵️♂️👊🦘👍
@Building the Ultimate Matchbox Car Collection Hey Tyrone, thanks for taking the time to reply to my recent posting 🤟 This video was in the back of mind today when I bought the Sea Fire for just £1 at a local market. Just missing those brittle red exhaust pipes 🤣
Love this video, Tyrone. Just like earlier days, it puts one to dreaming, with a smile on one's face and a happy hopeful heart. I was just looking at my Escort rally car the other day! How is availability of new castings by you these days? With all the supply issues in the states, peg hunting has been fruitless since this past winter; months and months. About the only things around are that red car that is coming and going, and that little white flatbed Subaru truck. I have the latter, not interested in the former. Lol I'd blame Mattel, but have to thank them that we still have Matchbox at all.
About the same here on the supply front, David. Many of the new releases I show are bought online. But you’re right, Mattel has kept Matchbox going despite it all. 👊👍🦘
My dad had a few of these left not too damaged and I happen to now have the magenta datsun in okay condition - I've decided to restore it now! Well I say restore it I would like to replace the wheels and add more detail but I am going to keep the striking colour the same while sprucing up the rest!
It’s difficult to distinguish colours from the catalogue photo but I’ve found so many variations I’ve given up trying to decide which one is correct for 1978. I’m resigned to ‘near enough is good enough.’ 🤷♂️🦘👍🍻

Guns and Marlboros! Ahhh.... the age of innocence! 🥳🥳🥳
Wonderful Tyrone, such pristine condition cars in your collection. Always a joy watching you do this style of video. Thanks for sharing
That catalog and your collection of mint cars is awesome . Great video.

It can’t possibly be 44 years ago. I’m guessing 8 or 10. Let’s go with 10. 🥲
Awesome vintage matchbox collection
Great info
Love it
Fantastic video, Dr. Tyrone 😉. The 70s were truly the golden age of MB, for me. Great work, can't wait for the next catalog review!
Very glad to see you’re continuing with the therapy. Happiness is within reach! 😂🍻👍👊
What a great collection. Congrats. Lamborgini Countach was my first matchbox who my grandpa bought me. Thanks for this review. Greetings from Chile.
Really enjoyed this, I just thought you were going to show the catalog but showing the actual cars themselves some beautiful pristine pieces there.

Totally the sweet spot for us older gentlemen, Michael. 🍻👊
What an awesome vintage Matchbox collection !!! ❤ Thanks for this great video.

Thanks, Christian. The scouts tell us to be prepared but they don’t say with what! 😂The things we really need make a very short list indeed.

Awesome haul bro
I have at least half of these in the attic - but not in this condition - mint colloction i,love it ❤
Awesome stuff. Pretty sure I have just about all of these if not all of them. As you said "astonishingly" my VW Golf also still has the surfboards. 😂
78 is my favorite year
It was a great time for Matchbox, Scott. 😎
Awesome collection!
I have at least one vehicle from each of those pages except the last page (15 in all). Now I want to go and look at my collection.

You got it, Blackbess. These fantastic little cars have reached the pinnacle of their careers in keeping us company into our quieter years. 🍻👊

3:50 it’s the Monteverdi Hai with the hard to find silver painted base. Did you recognise that?
57:25 the 1-75 series Hovercraft wasn't rola-matic but the Super Kings Hovercraft was...the radar on the top span when you pushed it along.
Interesting info, thank you. I’m yet to encounter the Hovercraft from the SuperKings series. 🕵️♂️

Wow, there's a matchbox called "Hellraiser". I'll have to look out for that one.
The lefties wouldn’t allow a name like that on a kids toy these days, 😂
Back in my day they were only 1.00 each in the stores im afraid to look on Ebay to see what there selling for now.
Very cool mix of cars there Tyrone...Take the end of the box off to make a garage is what I did too...haha...
So many boxes must have met their fate like this back then! 😳😂
No way, some boxes are more valuable than the cars in it
As a kid..
Woooau super beutiful
That snorkel fire engine, i have two of them and the red is different. Is that a variation?
It’s difficult to distinguish colours from the catalogue photo but I’ve found so many variations I’ve given up trying to decide which one is correct for 1978. I’m resigned to ‘near enough is good enough.’ 🤷♂️🦘👍🍻
Some of the cars you could see on speed racer 🤣🚘👍
for some reason is like ASMR for me
And the container has holes to be lifted by the fork lift.
Matchbox 1978. Catalogue full. Review
no 45, the bmw, is famous for its broken pillars on the front window...so dont open the doors too much...but i guess you wont
I silently cringe every time I demonstrate opening parts on these older castings. 🙈😂
