I have a collection of renumbered early (1980ies) Atlas (Kato) RS11 in the Central Vermont green and goldenrod paint scheme (even though the 3609 is the only one that is truly prototypical), and a trick I have found to make them run better is to replace the wheelsets by later blackened ones available from Atlas as parts. The later ones do not have traction tires and so pick up track power much more effectively, making the run smoothly as slow speeds. Of course pulling power suffers, but this allows me to run all four in a consist just like the CV used to 🙂 I've also used this same procedure to improve a Japanese prototype DD13 (which I painted in CN colours and called a GE centercab), and it can help early RSD-12s, RSD 4/5s, and RS-3s as well.
Very good info as usual sir......excellent ! I guess the one piece brass worm gear /shaft kind of acts as small flywheels would you say ? I sure do like those old Atlas and KATO RS11s ,RS-2s/RCS-2 and of course all the old "GEEPS": ,lovely looking little locomotives. Thanks for making these vids ,they are the best out there ,nothing else like these videos. Paul T

yes, I' ve done that in the past. they are great!
Believe it or not you can still get those brass contact strips from Atlas.
Really? I’ll have to keep that in mind. That’s good to know.
Nice repair. That RS shell is a little troublesome removing it. Thanks for sharing. Dave
