You can escape heat, but you can't escape humidity. 29c with low humidity vs 29c at high humidity is a huge difference. You can stand in the shade doing nothing and still sweat like a pig.

Yes!! The episode is very badly bad. Aircon is only exacerbating the environmental crisis! More fossil fuels are needed to power the aircon. The result is endless vicious cycle of rising global temperatures. Ppl should get creative on how to keep cool.
And also ppl should stop procreating! I’m an antinatalist & an advocate of VHEMT. Nobody needs to have 3 kids, single mum or not. Humans are the driving force of the environmental crisis. Everyone thinks their 2 kids won’t make a dent. Think about the cumulative effect of billions of others who are also procreating. 2500 soiled diapers alone are thrown out in just the first year of ONE baby. Not to mention the carbon footprint of every human for the entire lifespan.
Obese ppl also tend to feel sweatier and hotter. When I go into malls with aircon, I always wear a cardigan, but some fat ladies will still be carrying a little fan with their trotter hands.

She is a single mother with 3 children living in (I assume) a 2-rm flat. Her financial situation is probably not optimal. Most people would like to eat healthy but let’s face it, the poor cannot afford the healthier options, fresh meat is way more expensive than luncheon meat, for example. I hate to question her food choices for her family because she came across as a loving mother and she may be doing her best with limited resources. Food, utilities, school, basic needs… think of all her expenses. Who is to say we would not make the same choices if we found ourselves in her situation.

Yeah but even now that you're talking about it, i think most people don't understand what you're talking about.
RH refers to relative Humadity- the amount of moisture in the air.

    • @uncle-k3m
      @uncle-k3m 3 месяца назад +7

@@AR-ek1jr Yes! There’s rH (relative humidity), because the warmer air gets, the more water/humidity it can store.
Relative humidity is important to understand if water can evaporate (=create cooling) or not. If there’s already 100% of water in the air, it cannot evaporate/cool. The higher the humidity, the slower the evaporation/cooling. If rH is 70-80% like in SG, it’s very difficult for water (or also sweat!) to evaporate/create cooling. That’s why it takes so long for clothes to dry here and also why the body generates more sweat (trying to cool down more) and we feel sticky.
Do you think that explains it better?

Those so called experts weren’t really expert. To cool down the place, it is more effective to put a fan at the bedroom door facing the outside and leaving the window opened. Put another fan in the living room facing the kitchen and leave the kitchen window opened. Blowing a fan right at your face or using a ceiling fan to circulate air within a room itself isn’t effective in reducing the temperature. Drawing fresh air from outside into the room and expel the air out from the kitchen window helps. Airflow will bring fresh air into the rooms and cool it down. The airflow will also pull the hot air from the fridge, mould spores, odour etc out. The “experts” also never consider the sun and wind direction. North and South facing opening are windy depending on the time of the year. If wind is coming from the kitchen, they could place the fan facing the other way. Drawing air from the kitchen and blowing into the bedroom. N facing has sun from Oct to Mar and S facing Apr to Sep. Blocking out the harsh sun during the day will help keep the room cooler. blackout or alum foil screen helps. Having plants at the windows will also help to block excess light and reduces the heat. Put a tatami or bamboo mat on the mattress. Those were very common in the past when most home do not have aircon.

I live in an apartment with a balcony in Hong Kong where there is relatively good open space and I would say that rotating fans are better for flats simply because ceiling fans seem to circulate hot air. Great for reaching smaller spaces with the AC on but if we're talking ceterus paribus then a regular ROTATING fan would be the best for air flow since apartments(depending on where you're facing and the density of the buildings) tend to have much less circulation
This seems to be why ceiling fans are popular in restaurants but relatively uncommon in apartments. I have one but it is rarely used

    • @mehere6189
      @mehere6189 2 месяца назад +1

I'm not a fan of ceiling fans :) They just blow the air downwards. It still circulates within the apartment when you don't open the windows. It blows HOT air from the top of the ceiling down, so it just spreads more dust everywhere. They also make lamps flicker unless you get expensive ones that have the lights below them. DIRECTIONAL fans are important to direct the air to flow where you want it to. For example, blowing hot air OUTSIDE the house, instead of just circulating it up and down.

14:30 I find the advice to use an air cooler very misleading, and even harmful, especially in a humid climate like Singapore. It will increase the humidity even further, up to 100%. Also, the cooling only happens when the water can evaporate. This is the case when humidity is low. At 100% humidity, the water cannot evaporate, hence only increasing the moisture in the room. This will not at all lead to a cooler house but to a house with mold.

In Indonesia a low watt air-cond is really in high demand, for 1/2 PK or 5000 BTU the power consumption is only 260 Watt to 310 watts which saves more energy and money, sometimes in the large bedroom, we put 1/2 PK air-cond so we are not getting freezing but the room temp still comfort and breezing (24-26 degree Celsius)

Perhaps in the evening, it would be a good idea just to open up the windows fully and blast the fans just to vent out the hot air from the rooms - the Germans do something similar caused Stoßlüften ("Shock Ventilation"). Just doing this for 20min can make a huge difference to the room temperature. The use of ceiling fans and exhaust fans can further complement this.

Air coolers are bad and expensive idea! Install 1 ceiling fan in the bedroom and another 2 in the living hall will cool these rooms significantly. Move 1 or 2 standing fans to the cooking area too. Ceiling fans are easier to clean than standing fans too. Ceiling fans blades can be wiped with slightly damp cloth every 3 months, while standing fans need to clean every 3 weeks. The mother needs to cook more green vegetables and cut down on deep fried foods & carbonated drinks. Lotsa of outdoor exercises (walking, skipping and jogging) and sunlight (free Vitamin D) will help body to detox, thus reducing eczema flareouts too. Instead of spending so much on expensive anti itch eczema creams and skincare products, frequent washing of bedsheets and house cleaning help too. Too many baths will dry the skin even more. Eczema is caused by allergens in the air and frequent contact with sweat and dust, and mites. Invest in ceiling fans, a good Omega 3 supplement, changed diet and more outdoor exercises will improve the health of the family. Good personal hygiene, healthy diet, exercises, tidy & clean living conditions are the keys to better living, not installation of aircon! Just sharing my personal experience.

It's because healthly meals are more expensive thanks to capitalism (subsidies are also in sugar, etc) but also the SIngapore region doesn't have a lot of lands so they import a lot of the fresh foods (90% of their food is all imported and only 1% of their lands are farms).
You can't have a single parent working full time with 3 boys to feed to have that type of income to buy healthy meals.
Not neccesarily about eczema part because you forgot mold. See these flats are from the 70s or 80s era with the regulations a lot less steller than today's regulations (there was a huge need to house a lot of people and we know more today) and there are likely mold because that's everywhere in Singapore (Talking Point has an article about mold in homes).
Ceiling fan as a recommendation is fine, quite frankly this is the responsibility of their government to ensure ceiling fans are on all apartments but they like to cut costs especially on subsidies for low income citizens.

Adding more vegetables and less deep fried food is actually more economical, not only healthier. Our public rental flats are in liveable and pretty clean condition, not as bad as those in other countries. Far better than those in Hong Kong. fyi, I am a Singaporean, not from another region.

@@citrinebubbly8821 , building contractors regularly throw out perfectly good appliances and building materials. There are tons of people renovating houses in Singapore and they always throw these out. Good Hood may try to pair donors with those who need it, but it needs more critical mass. Carousell is already at critical mass with people offering free appliances they can't get rid of, so maybe Good Hood needs more staff and personnel to manage the pairings and partner with Carousell. So yes, lower income people should be entitled to some degree of quality of life because it is just their human right. They can get free secondhand stuff because rich people throw their stuff away all the time, it's better than recycling or putting them in a landfill. Working hard does not get people out of poverty, working smart does. So there's no need to blame the less fortunate because it is always smarter to ASK. I've seen people in poverty needing things until they die, but either cannot or will not ASK for it. The fact that this woman ASKED for something for her sons is admirable, because who knows, her sons can grow up and pay future taxes that will pay for other unfortunate Singaporeans in the future. Never be too proud to ASK for help.

@@citrinebubbly8821 Excuse me? Low income people have 2-3 different jobs because as the term says, these jobs pay very little. AKA they are more likely to work harder than you that human rights organizations would say they're being exploited.
The only reason someone is able to lift out of poverty is because government subsidies which Singapore does help only 400+ families out of the entire SIngapore population in full sibsidies while a few thousand have some subsidies when there are over 100,000 families in need of assistance. Most of them are helped out by NGOs (in fact NGOs are the ones who are so streched thin in Singapore). And the majority of the Singapore population were poor were it not for the Singapore government programs to lift people out of poverty by providing programs to train their citizens like seamstresses, factory workers + housing programs + build infrastructure like schools and roads (but this was in the past, it's not the same today). AKA you owe your success to government systems and pure luck like being born in the right families. And maybe nepotism involved like how rich people only help rich people + exploiting the poor. After all SIngapore has no legal minimum wage hence the exploitation is all too possible. It's part of why Singapore is the 2nd Asian country of highest income disparity (from no paid salaries, wage theft, the companies hiring low income people with "additional fees", overtime is not regulated so forced on employees).
AKA working hard has nothing to do with income levels at all seeing as exploitated people worked until they have health problems from working too hard and yet paid so little.

In climate such as Singapore where the humidity is high, an air-cooler that cools you via evaporation is literally redundant. Air coolers works best in dry climates where the humidity levels are low. I'm so confused why people are still selling/buying such products. It boggles the mind.
Essentially, buying a simple fan beats buying an air-cooler, which if you think about it... is just a pimped-out fan. Not only that, but if you use an air-cooler, you're introducing even more moisture into your already humid room. You're buying features that are not only redundant but might make things worse.

Newer HDb have to have aircons since they are packed so closed to each other , the heat from other aircon units will blow directly to your house lol. So blame the designers of new HDB why pack them so close together and trap heat.

Why blame the designers when they are forced to work within the limitations of the small plot of land? If anyone should be blamed, it's our dear government for cramming more people into this island in its pursuit of unsustainable GDP growth

1st you think you need an aircon, then you discover you can't afford to pay the electricity bill because you are using aircon. After one problem is solved another is created. Really need to make better choices in life. Alot of people has no aircon or can't afford replacing their spoilt aircon and live with it.

Sad to see how detached from reality is the "team". She cannot afford cotton sheets and wardrobe as those are expensive for her budget. The "cluttering" concept is from rich people. Poor people save whatever they can as that is all they have. It's easy to criticise and not put themselves in her shoes.
Coming up with purchased items and a team to do what she could never because is just herself and 3 children, is easy.
Adding electrical appliances will increase her electricity bill that she cannot afford 😢
Expecting any person to sleep fine in a 28C is really lacking in empathy.

Who are gonna play in the hot sun! Another BS why would SG government built a exercising corners or playground made of metal which is a good heat conductor.

There are also things which can be done like installing solar films on windows. Most of us would keep windows closed or at least some windows closed when we go out of the house to work in the morning.
Glass windows are a recipe for trapped heat via greenhouse effect. Nanoceramic solar films can cut IR heat at least 90% down and contribute to much less trapped heat.

Actually it’s not uncommon to not have AC in the HDB flats here and still make living conditions bearable. You really just need to declutter your space and allow for cross ventilation of the space. So opening windows and doors. Been living for 35 years without any AC…
