Jandek played Brisbane about 10 years ago, it was in a big venue but only about 30 people came to see him. It was a great show, then afterwards he invited a bunch of us up to his hotel room and was also a great host. He served cheese and crackers on a plate, handed out beers from the fridge, and generally was cool to hang out with. A warm and generous guy.

I'm glad Sterling has demystified Jandek in recent years. The myth was getting too big and too inaccurate. When asked if he wanted people to "get" what he sings he replied "There's nothing to get". He's just a free improv musician and poet. He writes the words and improvises most of the music. These days his wife Sheila has an Instagram and posts videos of them dancing in their living room and stuff lol. He's just a normal guy.

Nice! A few years ago I was at I college radio station in SF and was looking thru the LPS and they had a ton of Jandek, on the covers of most of them, people from the station had written ( in permanent marker) DO NOT PLAY ON AIR, or, ONLY PLAY AFTER 2AM. I gave my friend a couple of records to play on air that night, but she had never heard of it and when she heard it, refused to play it. I dig jandek, but not everyone does, great video, thanks!!

Have you even done a video on Fela Kuti? Really interesting story with a lot of great music. Being from Nigeria he took the idea of "stick to your guns, never sell out your morals" to a whole different level. He released an album called "Zombie" that criticized the Nigerian government, the government had the army storm his house, almost beat him to death, and murder his mother. Sidenote his mother was a Nigerian revolutionary who helped fight for independence and is know as "the Mother of the Nation". The story is crazy and will make a great video plus the music is great to jam out to, don't let the long track lengths intimidate you.

I am very interested in hearing your work. I understand what you are saying. Reading this I was reminded of artist Henry Darger. There was a beautiful documentary about his life. He was forgotten by the world due to his mental illness. He had no family so his art was his family. He spent 20 years creating art for himself. He recreated children's drawing books and his work was described as a cross between Walt Disney and the old testament. His work was shown after his death. I say all of that to say let your art be for you. You are the first audience and critic. I think we tend to find our worthiness in others instead of ourselves.

what i, personally, dislike about jandek the most is not his music itself, it's the cult of personality surrounding him wherein so many proclaim his genius simply because being into it suggests a degree of savvy or sophistication in the listener, when in fact it merely indulges the listeners pretensions and allows them to convince themselves they're into something that only the truly discerning understand. his work is unremarkable, but i don't fault him for that, it's the listeners that introduce the entire "emperor has no clothes" dynamic that is distasteful.

First thing I said when I listened to "Naked in the Afternoon" was it felt like "Hurt" by Nine inche nails. I wonder if they was inspired by this too? the off key instruments and way its sang it's very similar in many respects.

Love your videos! You might enjoy looking into an artist named Chad Fontaime. He lived on the streets but made some of the realist music out there. He passed away in 2016. I'd love to get him more exposure & see what yoi could fimd out aboit him.

Can you please cover Imam Alimsultanov, he was a Chechen singer and bard who died in 1996, a lot of the information is hard to get, but I think you'll find it interesting especially with the archive footage, and catalogue of about 50 songs available online in various qualities.

Okay, maybe you can’t say that something is “not art“ but you can definitely identify when something is shite and requires no skill to create.
Saying it’s the best thing ever is comically pretentious.

Why is most of his music not on apple music? How long did he stay completely anonymous for? Is it known for sure who he is? If not, how, considering he's performed live and anyone can contact him? Is he still making music? What does the word jandek mean?

i like the idea that he just made music and didnt care what ppl thought but also, he self-released his records and mailed them to ppl for free. i dont know what it cost to make an LP in 1978 but the vinyl i have been involved with for various bands, i think $1000-$3500 per album, that's for less than 1000.
so i would be really interested to know more about how Corwood was funded.
also, he is essentially a singer-songwriter. it is important to note that ppl find abstraction in music more palatable if there is a voice and a story, or if you include the album art and shadowy background, a puzzle to solve.
im just saying this bc it is 2021 and now we know what a year without live music feels like. Jandek from 1978 to 2004 had no performances.
ive released music and maybe my lens is smudged having brown skin making abstract lyric-less music, the sparse overlap of those worlds, but it is maybe important to think more about accepting the idea that the music we consume comes out of nowhere.
it's more fun to imagine music is a miracle
but in 2021, maybe just for a little while, we could be more practical. like ok musical genius, how much is your rent? dont worry we got you.
do i sound like a Taurus, i am one hahahaha
i dunno guys. the very small amount of press ive ever gotten, they want to make a story of you and if youre not Freddie Mercury in a frontless unitard then youre "mysterious".
    it's quaint.
    compelling i guess
and it worked for Jandek so thats awesome (some of my friends have gotten to be in Jandek's backing band!)
but Jandek is a very fortunate roll of dice. itd be great if more ppl had a better sense of just how ill-fitting a life of music-making can be with the economic structures we have.
supply and demand doesnt work for music. bc demand has to be drummed up, which detracts from creating the supply.
Corwood is a great example of how to bypass supply and demand but Jandek is unique bc he was able to hang on for many years in a slowly populating vacuum.
just to wrap up guys, im just saying try all the sounds and remember, if it is attributed to a name, thats usually a human or several humans and they gotta eat and probably sleep indoors just like you
    edit: ok one more thing
of course most of the musicians i know have normal jobs, at least part time ones
but to make music a career you almost always have to play lots of shows.
hmmm maybe this is some weird extension of... the "individualist but God's favorite" thing
not my most coherent rant but hopefully something useful came through
