Dr. Mark Hyman is leading a health revolution-one revolved around using food as medicine to support longevity, energy, mental clarity, happiness, and so much more.
Dr. Hyman is a practicing family physician and an internationally recognized leader, speaker, educator, and advocate in the field of Functional Medicine. He’s the founder and director of The UltraWellness Center, is the Head of Strategy and Innovation of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, AND is the Board President for Clinical Affairs for The Institute for Functional Medicine.
Somehow, in the midst of all this, he’s a twelve-time New York Times bestselling author. He’s also a regular medical contributor on several television shows and networks, including CBS This Morning, the Today Show, Good Morning America, The View, The Dr. Oz Show, and CNN.
And, as if all that weren’t enough, Dr. Mark Hyman hosts the leading health podcast The Doctor’s Farmacy. On his podcast, he shares a wealth of information about how our food choices are affecting our health and what we can do about it.
Needless to say, he’s an expert. Dr. Hyman is one of my favorite people to learn from about health because he is so honest about what’s going on. He’s really got humanity’s best interest at heart.
And he’s coming out with a new book (which we discuss in our interview)! After listening to this episode, Grab a copy of The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World.
But for now, join me on Episode 1,075 to learn about how food can heal or harm our bodies, how we can live longer, and how we can improve mental health with Dr. Mark Hyman!

My Grandmother lived to 96 yrs old. She was one of 11 siblings, 9 of the 11 lived longer than 92 with the longest sibling making it to 101. One of things my grandmother and great grandmother stressed was pay attention to how you feel after you ate something, even if it tastes really good, if it makes you feel bad, takes away your energy, gives you a head ache don't eat it,, and focus your attention to the foods you ate right before you felt at your best., And on top of that my grandfather worked at C&H Sugar on the Island of Oahu Hawaii, he worked in the department that was responsible for the bleaching of the sugar to make it white, every time the subject of sugar came up he lectured us on how toxic the bleaching chemicals were and we were not allowed sugar

Love seeing your families wisdom, that has been passed through the generations. I to come from a family, that passed on wisdoms, to do with food and eating. You know what's amazing? Ayurveda has always said that food is medicine. I don't agree with all ancient ideas but it is fascinating how some of them are being rediscovered. Another interesting takeaway from this conversation was Buckwheat. The part of India I come from, it is common for people to fast one or two days a week. On this day they will typically eat just one meal that would include a fruit, some vegetables, yogurt, and a chapati made from buckwheat. This one day is supposed to give your body rest from usual carb load of rice and wheat flour chapatis that are a part of every Indian meal.

My mom always said anything WHITE (bleached) is no good. The greener the vegetables, the better. My mom rarely ate meat, except for occasionally meatballs (she was Italian). I never saw my mom ever eat a piece of steak. Sweet potatoes, never WHITE.. She believed in vitamins. Lots of vitamin supplements- Waaay before there was any health food or vitamin stores existed! It was Brown rice, pasta, lots of salads. She drank only black coffee, not even sweetener. She didn't need to exercise. She mowed the lawn, weeded grass, cut down and trimmed trees, cleaned out gutters, she was literally Non -stop. She started all of this, because she was diagnosed with "Mediterranean Anemia" AKA Thalassemia. They originally thought she had Leukemia. That's how low her hemoglobin and hematocrit, etc were. They refused her B12 injections, and just told her to just eat liver, which she hated. She decided to STUDY even how vitamins were MANUFACTURED. This was in 1960 -( NO Google etc.) She was furious that MDs had no answers for her., so it was up to her. As kids, we thought she was crazy. Well she lived to 103. Still ambulatory, super strong. Walked with a cane, if necessary, never took prescriptions . She Exercised for balancing and strength only. She complained her whole life, how doctors were started going as "specialists." Her famous line was, " One day soon, there's going to be a right ear doctor and a left ear doctor. " Lol. She was truly waaaay ahead of her time. I really miss her. Agreed! However most folks ignore signs, subtle or not, that the body sends. Example. I’m post hip replacement surgery. My body said no to food for two weeks after surgery. Because digestion takes a lot of energy. Therefore it leaves less energy for healing. And, if it’s bad food, the body now has to get rid of the crap eaten. I wasn’t moving about much so, no need for food fuel. That’s how I view food. I love cooking and eating food. I eat a WFPB diet. But it doesn’t consume me. Eat to live. I’m not advocating any certain diet. As you said, ‘the food must fit you’.

meditation and yoga can open your mind to demonic spirits that are subtle and you get hit without knowing what hit you.

I have a herd of 30 goats on my property that eat only wild forage. The worms are completely resistant to the wormers. It is now a forced issue to go towards the natural way to raise a grazing animal. They have to have a kick ass immune system to survive and resistant worms that are out there. Grains definitely lower their resistance. My goats only get free choice minerals and extra copper boluses to stay healthy. If a goat is consistently weak they are culled from the herd. Only the strongest are used for reproduction. I have a beautiful, robust herd of goats now for 10 plus years. There are those around me who are losing their entire herds right now to worms.

I always ate healthy food so I thought I could eat whatever crappy food I wanted. I was a sugar junkie. I also suffered from horrible depression for years. The doctors just wanted to give me medication which I'm happy I declined. I started to pay attention to what I had eaten just before my depression started and it was always a lot of crappy sugary food. I would go to a cookout and eat BBQ food and the next day I couldn't get off the couch. I thought maybe it was the pork which it might have added to the problem but I've since learned barbecue sauce is loaded with tons of sugar 😞

Just 1/4 cup o.j. concentrate or pineapple chunk, a spoon of tomato paste, lots garlic and onion, then into the bullet with some cider vinegar, water, salt, pepper, worc teshire sauce, lots different spices, including warm spice like cinnamon or allspice or cardamom. I love this conversation. I am going to make a plan for meal prep. I work so much which has caused me to really drop the ball on proper eating. I see the results in me and my sons body and mood. Thank you for this quality content. You may have helped to save our lives:)
