I recently saw an interview with John Oats who wrote the song it was inspired by a woman he saw on briefly at a cafe but ultimately it is a song about NYC.
John was at a cafe in Greenwich Village, New York and saw a famous actress/model walk in. She basically had very salty language that didn't match her beauty. She was actress/model Kelly LeBrock from Weird Science. John wanted to do it in the Reggae style, but Daryl said he heard Motown (Listen to The Supremes "My World Is Empty Without You". They also decided the New York of the 80's was extremely materialistic and you could get caught up and lose yourself to it. They also compared NYC to a materialistic, selfish and toxic woman.
Tbh i’ve heard this song 100+ times since the 80s and i couldnt give a damn about the meaning of the lyrics. Its like so many amazing 80s hits: epic, instant hook, great chorus.
I've seen that question asked of Artist or song writers when they are asked "What is the Song about, what does it mean" and they answer "What does it mean to you?" That's what's important.
I have listened to all of your reactions...I look forward to each one!!! I grew up listening to the music of the seventies and the eighties and I always found it fascinating to watch reactions to that music from "younger" people in 2023. It is genuinely exciting to see people appreciate the artistry that went in to making music back then with no auto tune lol. Of course, with secular music you will get secular topics... but as I said it was the music I grew up on... besides back then we just "listened to the beat". At least that's what we told our parents😂😂. I appreciate your keen observations and musical knowledge. (And your choice of shirts and all that it goes with.)👍 Look forward to the next reaction. Btw, 1977 was the best year for music... I'm a bit partial though. Seriously though if you're looking for a great intro into a solid 70's band, you need to check out Boston. (No videos... start with "More than a feeling") Literally every song in that album is amazing!! Thanks again!
“One on One” is a great Hall & Oates song that really stands the test of time. I suggest that one next.

I like the sound of this song. I believe it can be interpreted in different ways
please react to "See The Light" Night Music 1988 by Jeff Healy (featuring Marcus Miller on bass and New Orleans jazz pianist Dr John on piano)
Great saxophone

It means a USER
Man user that leaves nothing behind. Doesn't automatically mean sex. A man abuser that takes and takes
Yeah it's pretty obvious.

Stay woke. As Leadbelly says in his song.
👍
I always thought she just used men
It’s just a song not a church sermon. But, watch out, anyway.
