Thanks again Jim! Lol I have finally decided to stay with Adobe Lightroom, on1, and NIK Silver Efex Pro 3 ! I’m dropping Luminar Neo after this current version ends. Your uploads have helped me a lot.
Good to see you doing a video for ON1 as it had seemed you had moved over to NEO full time. Also a valuable and improving application. Glad to see you talking about ON1.
Thanks Jim for your first revue of the latest On1 update. Loving the curves in this as it really simplifies them and makes a lot easier to use. Have just down loadedmy copy and installed. We are being spoilt by the software companies. I've just been playing with Photshop Beta and the generative fill which is amazing for removing things.
Wow! Trying the free On1 trial right now, and it's making me realize how intuitive Luminar Neo is. I'm going to try to learn it, but even a background removal and simple composite is proving to be a challenge.
@@JimNix The mask refinement had been a nightmare for me. Keeps doing the opposite of what I want, regardless of what I select. 😂 I wish I didn't have to use it, but the AI keeps missing huge, obvious chunks of background. Reminds me of smartphones about three years ago.
I’m really excited about this update! I’ve just been to Northern Ireland and I was looking at the photos - so many trees, so many dull skies - and just sitting on my hands for a bit waiting for this! (nb If you come to these shores again, Northern Ireland is a hidden gem. Blown away by the beauty!)
Thanks Caroline and yes this is quite an update, and lots of great new useful stuff in it. I hope to visit Northern Ireland someday, having only been to Dublin and nearby in the past, but found it so lovely and beautiful there. Thanks!
Thanks for going through the new update, Jim! I just did the update. I love the Curves update! Having the eyedropper will definitely make it easier! The masking features are awesome, too! Between Luminar Neo and ON1, I have all the editing software I need.
G'day Jim. Thanks a lot! Glad you had a bird example as I'm one of those who like a challenge eg small birds and birds in flight. ON1 continues to improve exponentially. And .... generative AI in Photoshop is totally mind-expanding! I realise it will be used for good ... and not so good. Cheers.
Thanks Jim, great video - glad ON1 worked for you. I’ve used it for a while now but, lately, it’s very crash prone. The Ai features just aren’t there yet and their developers need to sort the problems out BEFORE advertising them as available. Most are not!
Hi there and sorry to hear you are having issues with it. It's been super stable for me. I assume you contacted their support already, but if not that would be a good next step to get some help. Thanks for watching.
That was a nice intro to this amazing ON1 upgrade. As always, your authenticity and humility makes it even more interesting to watch. While masking seems natural to me, I must admit that curves was also intimidating at first. Thank you so much for sharing.
Very helpful. Thanks very much. I had no idea how to best use these features or even know about some of them. Insofar as masks are concerned, I’d appreciate a video on how to copy a mask and examples why you’d use one
Jim could you comment and show how you would use your workflow if ON1 is your main content editor, but I also use Photoshop and luminar. My question is I would like to interchange my image with all these programs without getting out of ON1, is this possible or do I have to make LRC my main editor?
Hi Jim, I have the new up date and it is awesome. I just wanted to point out you missed the back ground area on the bird just under its wing and log. Thanks for the tutorial.
Great vid Jim. I bought On1 2023 Raw as an alternative to Luminar NEO as I was having a few problems that Skylum couldn't fix for me. However, On1 looks so complicated I literally didn't know where to start!! Beyond browsing and bringin in a photo to edit and some obvious slider adjustments it was baffling...nowhere near as intuitive as NEO. Now that the latest updates to NEO have solved my issues it is my go to editor and On1 just sits gathering dust. Are you contemplating doing Luminar style tutorials for On1? I'd love to get started with it so that I can opt for one or the other depending on the need of the edit. Always enjoy your vids on Luminar and hopefully for On1 too
Hi Nigel and thanks so much. I have a full playlist for On1 Photo Raw 2023 which is here ruclips.net/p/PLye10L-yi8hUq2W_-cXQa2svTkr7LWYnm and if you go back in that playlist a little bit you will see several vids that are "beginner's guides" style videos. Those are the best place to start. Thanks and HTH!
I also had the same photo editing fears Jim. I found masking and the Tone Curve were the most intellectually challenging aspects I confronted. I am quite confortable with both now, especially delighted that masking technology has improved by leaps and bounds over the recent years in ease of use and power in reputable first-class applications like ON1Photo RAW; but I would be embarrassed to publicly reveal how long it took me to get there. It was many, many, many months!
Thanks again for posting as always. It's really helpful. I just downloaded this on a a new computer and it's not letting me edit one picture from Lightroom without migrating the whole collection. Is that new?
Hi Bracc and honestly I am not sure, as I do not use LR much at all (and not for my catalog) so not clear on that piece. But they do sell On1 Effects as a plugin for LR, and Photo Raw (which is this product, and their complete all-in-one) does not work as a plugin from LR. So in other words, their plugin version is different from their standalone version. Maybe that helps?
What an Update!
I am excited about this as well. On1 has been my goto editor for a while. Everything else is a plug in. I did try it and it is still not there yet at least for what I do. Unfortunately Adobe still does it better :(
@@JimNix Sorry I did not make it more clear. Refine is not there yet. Though it seemed to work quite well on your image. I took a portrait. Told it to mask for the person. It did a terrible job. The person had a red jacket on. The background was dark gray paper backdrop, there was a space between the arm and jacket. The I tried to use refine to separate the red jacket from the dark grey background. On1 could not do it. It was totally simple and it could not see the difference between the dark grey background and a red jacket. Adobe version 6 which is ancient could do this with no problem without any refinements. I have been quite disappointed with on1 and any type of AI masking in general with simple things like a human on a different color background.
Today is a sad day for me. I was really looking forward to getting this update and set about installing it. Unless you are positive that your computer meets the latest driver specifications don't even try to install. I was hoping that ON1 would have tested my device properties before installing, nope. Now no On1 for me. I've sent a request for instructions how to reinstall a previous version. Anyway, great video Jim.
@@JimNix It was a driver issue and the support from On1 was able to get it sorted out. Seems it was a problem for many others... Stevie saved the day for me.
There is a lot to On1, which I agree can make it a little intimidating, but it is powerful and once you spend a little time with it, it is easy to figure out and get great results with.
this masking is one of the reasons i downloaded On1. cheers for the vid
thanks Jase and yep the masking in On1 is amazing for sure!

Yeah good point, these two products do overlap some but Neo is more AI-based and geared towards hobbyists more than On1 is for sure.
